Futhey Doubles in the Dark

On a flop of {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {9-Spades}, Wilbur Futhey raised a bet of 600 from his opponent to 3,000. His opponent made the call. After the pot was pulled in, Futhey stuck his last 6,100 into the middle in the dark. His opponent called him in the dark.

The turn card revealed the {6-Hearts} and then both players exposed their cards. Futhey held top two pair with {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds} and his opponent held {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}.

Futhey needed to dodge his opponent's flush draw in order to double up and did so when the {7-Diamonds} hit the felt.

More Pots for Brady

Matt Brady has been really active lately. On the first hand, he raised to 375 from early position and was called by two players, one in middle position and one in the big blind.

The flop came {K-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} and the big blind checked. Brady bet 650 and the next player folded. The big blind raised to 1,525. Brady studied his opponent and then put in a reraise to about 3,900. His opponent quickly folded and Brady tabled the {6-Spades} {5-Spades}.

A few hands later, Brady was involved in a four-way limped pot. The flop came {10-Clubs} {9-Spades} {6-Diamonds} and the first player checked. The next player bet 200 and the third player called. Brady then raised to 1,200. The next player folded and the original bettor made the call. The other player folded as well as it would be heads up to the turn.

The turn brought the {3-Diamonds} and a bet of 1,000 was presented to Brady. He made the call. The river brought the {8-Clubs} and Brady's opponent bet 2,000 this time. Brady made the call.

After his opponent turned over {6-Spades} {6-Clubs} for a flopped set, Brady revealed his {10-Spades} {7-Diamonds} for a straight and scooped the pot.

Miles Away

Timothy "T.K." Miles
Timothy "T.K." Miles
We wandered over toward Table 52 to check on T.K. Miles, who made the final table of this event last year. To our surprise, Timothy Duckworth is now occupying Seat 4, the seat that was formerly occupied by our straggly-haired pro. We admittedly missed the hand that sealed his demise, but we can tell you that T.K. Miles won't be headed to the final table again this year in New Orleans.

By the Numbers

Registration has closed following the first break, and the final numbers have been tallied.

One hundred sixty-seven players have entered the Championship Event, and 18 of them will earn a payday tomorrow. The bottom level of cash is worth $13,982, and it goes up pretty quickly from there. Each of the nine final tablists will take home at least $21,971. The lucky man or woman who manages to outlast the entire field will pocket $211,722, a shiny gold-inlaid diamond ring, and a ticket to the 2009 WSOP Main Event.

Full payout info can be found in the "Prizepool and Payouts" tab to the right.

The River Gets Terry

After his opponent checked the board of {J-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} to him, Todd Terry bet 525. His opponent called.

The river was the {4-Diamonds} and Terry's opponent bet 1,000. Terry went into the tank and then finally made the call. He was shown {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} by his opponent for a straight. Terry mucked and is down to 15,000 chips.

The Wrong Man to Double Up

Dwyte Pilgrim
Dwyte Pilgrim
Dwyte Pilgrim opened the action from late position with a raise. Small blind Seth Fischer popped it back, and Pilgrim moved all-in for a total of 7,700. Fischer called.

Showdown
Pilgrim: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}
Fischer: {A-Spades} {K-Clubs}

The board ran out {6-Clubs} {10-Spades} {9-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {K-Hearts}. The king on the end was no good for Fischer as it filled Pilgrim's straight. He has earned a much-needed double-up, sitting now with 15,550.

No Juice for Manny

Two players limped in from late position before the small blind raised the action to 1,050. Manny Minaya was in the big blind and put in a reraise to 3,850. All three players folded, giving Minaya the small pot preflop.

Minaya-cal Call

Minaya in the tank
Minaya in the tank
We join the action over on Table 44 where Manny Minaya is facing a big decision. The board shows {2-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {K-Spades}. Heads up in the pot, Minaya's opponent has bet enough to put the pro all-in. As we walk up, Minaya is deep in the tank, struggling with his decision. After a minute or two, he stands up to kneel on his chair, a resigned look on his face. Finally, he grabs his remaining 10,750 chips and clunks them into the pot with a dull thud-rattle.

His opponent shuffles {A-?} {6-?} in between his hands as Minaya turns over the winning {J-Spades} {3-Spades} for just a pair of threes. After making that big call, the pro has doubled his way up to over 30,000.
