Day 2 Started

Today is moving day at the World Series of Poker Circuit Harrah's Chester Main Event. Day 1 welcomed 269 players to the felt, and that number was reduced all the way down to just 55 by night's end. When the dust settled after 16 levels, Huy Nguyen was atop the leader board after turning his 20,000 starting chips into 241,400 in the chip bag. Nguyen is no stranger to this kind of success. He's already the owner of one Main Event ring from Choctaw, and he's therefore locked up a spot in the 100-player National Championship later this month.

But Nguyen's repeat is a long way from secure. Mike Rocco (not the one that won a bracelet in 2008), is in second place heading into today. He and Nguyen are the only players over 200,000 so far. But there are plenty getting close. Matt Brady had his hands on the chip lead for a chunk of Day 1, and he's gunning for his first ring and a second $1,500 title this year. He's in fourth place with 187,800 chips, and right behind him sits the dangerous Jake Toole with 186,500. Also still in the mix are Ari Engel, Kenny Nguyen, Miguel Borrero, and Mark "diphthong" Herm.

The dealers have been given the command, and Day 2 is a go! Today's goal is to play down to a final table.

Ari "BodogAri" Engel is off to a hot start on Day 2. While he was still unbagging his chips, we picked up a pot as the table folded around to the blinds. Greg Kolo completed from the small, and Engel raised to 8,600 from the big. After a quick pause, Kolo reraised to 33,000 total, and Engel said, "You're not messing around, are you?" He continued to fiddle with his pile of chips for a minute before announcing an all in. Kolo quickly called off his remaining ~40,000, and the cards were on their backs.

"I have kings," Engel said.

"You're good."

Showdown
Kolo: {A-Diamonds} {J-Spades}
Engel: {K-Hearts} {K-Spades}

There was no funny stuff as the board ran out {2-Spades} {9-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {5-Spades}, holding Engel's kings. He's earned the first knockout of Day 2, and the pot boosts his stack up to about 240,000 and into a dead heat for the chip lead. The man he's chasing? Huy Nguyen, sitting on Engel's direct left today.

Get yer popcorn.

Monsterpotten!

How to Win a Poker Tournament, by Ed Cotter.

Under the gun, Mario Silvestri shoved his last ~30,000 into the middle. Action folded around to the button where Eric Seigel reshoved his ~80,000-chip stack as well. But the action was far from over. In the small blind, Lynne Mitchnick moved in with her big stack, and next door, Ed Cotter called all in as well! With three players at risk, the cards were tabled:

Showdown
Silvestri: {9-Hearts} {10-Hearts}
Siegel: {K-Diamonds} {K-Spades}
Mitchnick: {K-Hearts} {K-Clubs}
Cotter: {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades}

Wow. It was a dream spot for Cotter, and he even managed to hold up as the board ran clean, coming {2-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {2-Hearts} {7-Spades}.

The fallout from that monster pot leaves Siegel and Silvestri out, Mitchnick with just 25,000 chips, and Cotter in the chip lead with about 300,000!

Mitchnick's Monday Blues

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

It's not been a good day for Lynne Mitchnick.

A few moments after running her kings into aces in that big pot, Rob Perelman shoved on her for his last 27,400. Mitchick called with {A-Spades} {J-Clubs}, and Perelman's {A-Hearts} {9-Hearts} was in bad shape. But only for a quick minute. The dealer ripped a nine right off on the flop, and Mitchick could not catch back up.

Perelman doubled back close to 60,000, while Mitchnick was left with just 400 lonely chips. She'd manage one double up before her {A-Hearts} {2-Spades} fell to Perelman's {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} to put her out of her misery.

Cotter's Hero Call Goes South

Chip leader or not, the curmudgeonly Cotter would rather give us the middle finger than have his picture taken.
Chip leader or not, the curmudgeonly Cotter would rather give us the middle finger than have his picture taken.

Ed Cotter called from middle position. Patrick Houchins did the same from the hijack, but Mike Rocco raised to 18,000 from the button. The blinds got out of the way, but both limpers came along to see the {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop.

Cotter checked it to Houchins who moved all in for about 88,000. Rocco got out of the way, but Cotter went into the tank. After a little while he called and to the shock of the table, he tabled {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}! Houchins tabled {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and needed a bit of help to survive. He found none from the {4-Clubs} turn, but got there when the {7-Diamonds} hit the river.

Nguyen Finds His Card

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

After a series of preflop raises, Rocco Luciano got himself all in for about 190,000 with the {K-Spades} {K-Hearts}. His opponent was the start-of-day chip leader, Huy Nguyen, and Mr. Big Stack came along with his inferior {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds}.

The {Q-Spades} {2-Clubs} {2-Hearts} flop was a swing and a miss for Nguyen, but the {10-Diamonds} turn gave him another four outs to chase down Broadway. He'd miss his straight, but the river {A-Diamonds} was just as good. Coming from behind to take that pot, Nguyen has eliminated another player and retaken the chip lead with 440,000 of them towered in front of him.

veeRob Times Two

Rob Perelman
Rob Perelman

We picked up the action on a {4-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {7-Clubs} flop as Rob Perelman was getting his last ~45,000 into the pot. Patrick Houchins looked him up with {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, and his pair was ahead. Perelman tabled {Q-Hearts} {8-Hearts} drawing at the hearts for his tournament life.

The turn came the {10-Spades}, the wrong color, but the river {9-Hearts} was just what Dr. Perelman ordered. The flush comes through, and "veeRob" is up to 106,000 with that double. Houchins is still doing just fine, comfortably in the top five with 262,000 chips remaining.
