Stocz Drops the Ball, Carroll Begins to Rise and Levy Runs Into Aces

Adam Levy
Adam Levy

Levy Runs Into Aces3:48pm

With about 7,000 in the pot and the board reading {K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}, Adam Levy was faced with a bet of 4,000 from his opponent. After a little while in the tank Levy called, mucking when his opponent tabled {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. Levy fell to about 14,000.

Carroll Climbing3:53pm

Yevgeniy Timoshenko opened to 500 under the gun and next to act James Carroll made it 1,350 to go. Jonathan Tamayo called from Carroll’s immediate left and action folded around to Timoshenko, calling as well.

The flop came down {A-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts} and all three players checked. Timoshenko bet 2,400 when the {6-Clubs} hit the turn and only Carroll called. The river was the {K-Clubs} and both checked. Carroll tabled {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, good enough to win the pot and up his stack to about 92,000.

Lee Runner-Runners Bowker to the Rail - 3:57pm

Bernard Lee and Kyle Bowker went to war on a flop of {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. Bowker bet 1,200 and Lee raised to 3,125. A re-raise from Bowker followed along with a shove from Lee, with the much bigger stack. Bowker called all in with {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}, having Lee’s {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} destroyed. However, the turn and river ran out a miraculous {6-Clubs} and {3-Spades} to clinch the hand for Lee, upping his stack to 56,000 and sending Bowker to the rail.

Stocz Misclicks? - 4:08 PM

Sorel Mizzi opened to 450 from middle position, and Charles Wiper three-bet to 1,150. Eric Stocz cold-called in the big blind, and Mizzi called the extra as well to go three ways to the flop.

It came {Q-} {K-} {Q-}, and Stocz led out with a big overbet of 10,000. Mizzi folded quickly, but Wiper wasn't going anywhere. He moved all in, and Stocz, with just 3,500 left, was forced to fold his {4-} {6-}. Wiper's {K-} {K-} had flopped a full house, and Stocz claimed that he meant to bet 2,000 instead of 10,000.

Either way, the last of Stocz chips went into a pot just a couple hands later, and he was unable to survive his all in, exiting here early on Day 1.

Mercier Three-Bets Preflop, Folds On River - 4:20 PM

From under the gun, a player raised to 600. Jason Mercier was in the next seat and reraised to 1,750. Action folded back around to the original preflop raiser and he made the call.

The flop came down {7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs} and the first player checked. Mercier didn't bet, tapping the table behind before the dealer placed the {9-Diamonds} out on the turn. Both players checked again.

The river card was the {3-Spades} and the first player paused for a moment. He then fired out 2,100. Mercier gave one last check back at his hand before tossing it into the muck, relinquishing the pot.

Somehow Lee Finds Victory in the One - 4:55 PM

There was a raise to 550 and three players called, including Bernard Lee from the small blind. The flop came down {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and Lee checked. Kyle Bowker fired 1,200. Everyone folded back to Lee and he raised to 3,125. Bowker reraised to 5,000 and then Lee moved all in. Bowker called and tabled the {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}, putting Lee's {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} in bad shape.

Fortunately for Lee, the turn was the {6-Clubs} and the river the {3-Spades} to give him two pair and the winning hand, somehow coming from behind in this one to win a big pot and double up to 55,000 in chips.

O’Brien Takes Most of Bergeron’s Chips4:56 PM

With 12,175 in the pot and the board reading {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, Craig Bergeron was facing a decision for 16,200 chips from Dan O’Brien. After a little while Bergeron called, mucking his hand when O’Brien turned over {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}.

O’Brien: Up to roughly 47,000
Bergeron: Down to about 5,200

Kings Are Good for Binger - 5:00 PM

With over 5,000 chips in the middle, we got to the table with the board reading {J-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{10-Clubs} and Justin Smith in the tank. He was facing a bet of 4,100 from Nick Binger. After a couple minutes of though, Smith tossed in the chips to make the call. Binger tabled the {K-Hearts}{K-Spades} and Smith mucked his hand. Binger increased to 46,000 in chips with this pot.

Kenney Doubles5:01 PM

A short-stacked Bryn Kenney got his remaining 4,400 into the middle on a board that read {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades} with {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. His opponent had {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and Kenney safely doubled through to about 12,000 when the {8-Spades} river card fell.

Bergeron Eliminated - 5:03 PM

On the flop of {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, Craig Bergeron was all in for his last few thousand chips and called by two opponents. The turn paired the board with the {K-Clubs} and both remaining players checked. The river was the {A-Hearts} and both players checked again.

Bergeron held the {A-Spades}{J-Spades} having flopping the nut straight, but the second of the two players who called his all-in bet held the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and turned a full house. Bergeron was sent to the rail.

Only in Hammond - 5:09 PM

On the board of {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{4-Clubs}, Alex Keating fired 1,300 and was called by Chris Klodnicki. The river completed the board with the {A-Diamonds} and Keating checked. Klodnicki thought and then fired 2,100. Keating tanked for a bit, apologized if he was inadvertently slow rolling and then made the call.

Klodnicki mucked his hand when Keating called and then Keating mucked as well, opting not to show. The dealer pulled in Keating's hand into the muck pile and then Kenny Nguyen asked, "What if I want to see that hand? Doesn't he have to show?"

Normally, the winning hand always has to be shown at most venues, but not here in Hammond. The dealer explained the rule as did a floor person who said that only here in Hammond is it a rule that the winning hand doesn't have to be shown if the other player mucks. He also explained that no one else at the table can request to see the hand.

Adams For President - 5:12 PM

We caught up to the action a bit late, but Brandon Adams and an opponent somehow managed to build a pot of about 18,000 chips preflop. They both checked the {2-Clubs} {K-Spades} {3-Diamonds}, bringing the {4-Diamonds} on fourth street. Adams considered for a while before settling on a bet of 8,000, and his opponent check-called without too much delay.

The river {A-Hearts} drew another check from the unknown gentleman, and Adams quickly moved all in for about 14,000 total. The fold came quickly from across the table, and the Full Tilt Red Pro has moved up to about 48,000 with that pot.

Peters Looking For a Book5:14 PM

On the turn, the board showed {Q-Spades} {A-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}, and David Peters led out into the pot with a bet of 6,300. He was up agaist Barry Greenstein, a copy of his book Ace on the River tucked neatly under the Bear's chair. Greenstein called the bet to see the river, and the {J-Clubs} filled out the board. Peters thought it over for a bit, eyeing up the stack of his opponent. After a minute or so, Peters grabbed his tower of high-denomination chips and plunked them into the pot, enough to cover Greenstein.

A quick fold gave the pot to Peters, and Greenstein is down around 24,000 or so.

Carroll Bluffs His Way to Six-Figures5:17 PM

After a player in early position opened the pot with a raise, James Carroll re-raised to 1,350 from the cutoff. Action folded around to opening raiser and he four-bet to 3,550. Carroll called and the flop ran down {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}.

It was checked to Carroll and he bet 4,800, receiving a quick call. The {Q-Hearts} hit the turn and this time, Carroll's opponent led out 6,000. Carroll called, landing the {10-Diamonds} on the river. His opponent checked after about 30 seconds and Carroll asked to see how much his opponent had behind. After seeing it was about 11,000, Carroll bet 15,000 and his opponent winced in discomfort, folding his hand.

Carroll turned over {A-Clubs}{5-Spades} for ace high as he collected the chips, increasing his stack to about 110,000.

Selbst Strides Ahead - 5:19 PM

We picked up the action on the turn as the dealer put the fourth card down on a {7-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {K-Spades} board. David Baker was heads up, and he checked. Vanessa Selbst (who's been active in her typical fashion today) slid out 3,800, and Baker flicked in the call.

The river was the {4-Clubs}, and Selbst put one more bet in the pot, making it 9,300 to see her cards. Baker wasn't sure whether or not he wanted to, and he took several long minutes to think it over. He was statue-still for a good while, eventually shifting in his chair and trying to engage his opponent in a little friendly banter. Selbst wasn't giving anything up, though, and Baker eventually dropped the calling chips into the pot with some hesitation.

Selbst tabled {J-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}, and Baker tapped the felt in acknowledgement. He double-checked his hole cards, studying them for 10 or 15 seconds to make sure he couldn't beat that before returning them to the dealer. “Nice hand, Vanessa,” he said, taking a hit down to about 35,000. Selbst, on the other hand, is up to 60,000, doubling her starting stack here in the first 5 levels.

Table Talk5:28 PM

Allen Bari - “If (Matt) Stout is the one that busts me, I'm taking all my chips and throwing them in the garbage. I swear to god, I'm not even kidding.”

Recent Eliminations - 5:40 PM

Allen Bari and McLean Karr have been eliminated. Matt Stout didn't get either of them, so the chips are still on the table.

Madsen Eliminated, Jetten Crippled5:45 PM

With the board reading {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{7-Spades}, Jeff Madsen was all in for about 10,000 and another opponent was all in for roughly 24,000. Jetten tanked for about two minutes and called, showing {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}.

Madsen turned over {9-Spades}{8-Spades}, while the third player had {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for bottom set. The {K-Diamonds} turn card and {8-Hearts} river card sealed Madsen’s fate, eliminating him just as Level 6 started. Jetten is down to about 5,000

Medic Forces Out a Boat, Binger Gets Aggressive, Mercier Sends Another Packing

Medic’s Opponent Mucks Full House5:51 PM

Five players saw the flop come down {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{4-Spades} in a limped pot. The first two players checked and then Miguel Borrero checked. Nenad Medic bet 900 and the next player called. Everyone else folded.

The turn card brought the {5-Hearts} and Medic fired 2,300. His opponent made the call and the two saw the {Q-Clubs} fall on the river. Medic opted to check. His opponent fired 6,500 and then Medic check-raised to 23,000. His opponent tanked for quite some time before open folding the {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, laying down a full house. Medic gave a little smirk and scooped the pot without showing. He moved to 75,000 in chips.

Brady Shoves the River5:59 PM

Matt Brady and Faraz Jaka both checked the flop of {10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and then the {K-Clubs} was added on the turn. Brady fired 1,000 and Jaka made the call. The {Q-Spades} fell on the river and Brady moved all in for 5,400. Jaka didn’t make the call, sliding his hand forward as a fold. Brady won the pot, but is still pretty short with just 9,150 chips in his stack.

Mercier Busts One6:18 PM

The board read {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and the pot had about 13,000 in the middle. Jason Mercier bet 12,000, just covering his lone opponent in the land. After a good four minutes thinking it over, his opponent called all in and showed {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}. Mercier, though, turned over {A-Hearts}{J-Spades} and went on to win the pot, eliminate his opponent, and increase his stack to about 78,000.

Binger Aggressive Post Flop6:23 PM

The under-the-gun player raised to 800 and Justin Smith called from the next seat. Nick Binger called from the small blind and made for a three-handed flop to be seen. The first three community cards came down {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and Binger checked to the preflop raiser. He fired 1,200 and that knocked Smith out of the way. Binger was then up again and check-raised to 3,600. His opponent called.

The turn card was the {7-Diamonds} to pair the board. It didn’t slow Binger down as he fired out 5,700. His opponent took 20 seconds to himself and then spun his hand into the muck.

Mizzi Doubles Through Bohlman6:32 PM

Sorel Mizzi was all in for about 6,500 with {A-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and was up against Scott Bohlman’s {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}. The flop came down {A-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}, ending this one pretty quickly. The {2-Spades} fell on the turn and Mizzi commented, “Why couldn’t you have aces so this could be really sick?” The {7-Diamonds} river card was just a formality and Mizzi is up to about 15,000. Bohlman slipped to 32,000.

With the end of that level, the players went on a 75-minute dinner break.

Kassela Eliminated, Zolotow Doubles and Lee Busts Leah... Aces Everywhere!

Williams Chips Up8:22 PM

On a {J-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop, two players checked to David Williams and he bet 2,500. Both opponents came along to see the {4-Hearts} turn card and again checked to Williams. This time he bet 6,500 and chased one opponent out, but Mike Mustafa called. The {4-Diamonds} hit the river and Mustafa checked for a third time. Williams bet 12,000 and was quickly called, showing {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}. Mustafa mucked and dropped to about 45,000, while Williams upped his stack to about 71,000.

Smith Eliminates Raghavan8:25 PM

Ravi Raghavan raised to 1,100 in the hijack and Justin Smith popped it to 3,300 on the button. When the action folded back to Raghavan, he got out of his chair and put his backpack on. Then he dropped in his remaining 11,000 or so into the middle Smith called with {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}, racing with Raghavan’s {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. The {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop put Raghavan out in front, but the {10-Diamonds} hit the turn and left him drawing dead. Smith is up to about 50,000.

Rivera Sends Kassela Home8:29 PM

Jordan Morgan started things off with a raise to 1,025 from early position. Two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner and current WSOP Player of the Year leader Frank Kassela was in middle position and reraised. He made it 3,225 to go and action folded over to Anthony Rivera on the button. Rivera has a WSOP gold bracelet of his own, coming back in 2008 when he won the $10,000 World Championship Mixed Event. He four-bet to 7,500 from the button. The two blinds and Morgan folded before Kassela was back up. Kassela tanked before deciding to put it all at risk, moving all in for about 10,500. Rivera quickly called with the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. He had Kassela’s {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} in bad shape.

The board ran out {J-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs} and that was the end of the line for Kassela. He exited the tournament while Rivera won the pot and pushed his stack to 52,000 chips.

Zolotow Rockets to a Double8:41 PM

A player opened with a raise from under the gun to 2,100. Steve Zolotow reraised to 4,700 from middle position and the original raiser made the call.

After a flop of {4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, the first player check-called a bet of 5,250 from Zolotow. The turn then brought the {9-Diamonds} and the first player checked again. Zolotow fired all in for an even 20,000 and his opponent called. Zolotow tabled the {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades} and his opponent the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

Zolotow was able to dodge a king on the river when the {4-Spades} fell and successfully doubled up to greater than 60,000 in chips.

Selbst Doubles Andrzejewski8:41 PM

Pawel Andrzejewski bet 3,725 from the small blind on a {J-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Spades} flop and Vanessa Selbst called from the cutoff, landing the {8-Clubs} on the turn. Andrzejewski bet 7,700 and Selbst asked to see what Andrzejewski had behind. Upon seeing it was about 25,000, Selbst raised enough to cover Andrzejewski;’s stack, but he quickly called and revealed {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. Selbst was making a move with {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and the {Q-Clubs} river card was not enough to help her. She dropped to about 45,000 while Andrzejewski shot up to roughly 76,000, but then dropped back to 30,000 a few minutes later.

Bernard Lee’s Turn for Aces to Bust Mike Leah with Queens8:51 PM

From under the gun, Kevin Saul raised to 900. Darryll Fish flatted in the cutoff seat and then Mike Leah reraised from the button to 3,600. Bernard Lee was in the big blind and tanked after action got to him. He then put in another reraise to 10,500. Saul and Fish both folded before it was Leah’s turn to tank. He tanked for a minute or so and then made the call.

Well over 20,000 chips were already in the middle between Leah and Lee when the flop came down {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}. Lee was up first and took his time before betting out 13,600. Leah thought and then announced that he was all in. Lee quickly called and turned up the {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}. Leah held the {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}.

The turn brought the {5-Diamonds} and then the river completed the board with the {10-Hearts}. Lee’s aces held up and at final count, his 34,800 chips were more than what Leah had in his stack. Leah was eliminated while Lee soared to about 117,000 in chips.

Jaka Grants a Double Up, Still Comes Out Ahead - 9:03 PM

A player in the hijack seat (we'll call him “Hijack” since we don't know his name) opened to 1,100, and Faraz Jaka made the call next door. On the button, a player we know as “Button” moved all in for just over 15,000. Hijack promptly re-shoved over the top, and the decision was back on Jaka. He would take a good long soak in the think tank before calling all in himself, creating a three-way showdown for a big pot:

Hijack: {A-Spades} {K-Clubs} (covering stack)
Jaka: {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts}
Button: {K-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}

The flop brought a queen for the button as it came {9-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {6-Clubs} to pull him into a big lead. The {7-Hearts} turn was a good card for Jaka as he was the only player with a live flush draw heading to the river. Jaka couldn't find an out, though, and the {3-Spades} river secured a big triple up for Mr. Button. After paying off his debt, Jaka had 19,550 with which to take the side pot, doubling that up to 39,100 and ending up slightly ahead in that shakeout.

Welch Doubles and Main Event Champion Jewell Is Shining

Kurt Jewell

Welch Doubles with Ducks - 9:38 PM

On the board of {K-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades}, Andrew Frankenberger bet 16,000 and then Ryan Welch moved all in for 27,675. Frankenberger called with the {A-Spades}{K-Spades}, but was behind the {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for Welch. The river completed the board with the {6-Diamonds} and Welch doubled up to more than 70,000 in chips.

Table Talk - 9:40 PM

We apparently walked up to the table just after a pot between Kevin Saul and Darryll Fish, but we were right on time for the table talk.

Saul: “You were supposed to double me up.”

Fish: “I don't do what I'm supposed to very often. Like when I'm supposed to win at poker... yeah, I don't do that.

Fish Thinks He's Slick9:41 PM

Just moments after that exchange with Kevin Saul, Darryll Fish and the gentleman to his right tangled up in a pot that left the unknown player all in for 15,000. He held {A-Diamonds} {4-Hearts}, and he was in bad shape against Fish's {A-Hearts} {Q-Spades}.

The flop brought an unexciting ace for both players as it came {A-Spades} {7-Spades} {9-Hearts}.

“Put a four out there!” Saul said from across the table.

Fish smirked. “If you do, I'm gonna come across this table and --”

Turn: {4-Clubs}. Fish was stopped in mid sentence, and the whole table reacted to Saul's sick call. Even Fish had to smirk at the sight of his opponent's three-outer laying there on board. The river {5-Diamonds} wasn't the king Fish was looking for, and he's granted a double up to slip back to 43,000.

“Gonna be hard for me to double you up if I keep losing,” Fish groaned at Saul.

Stout Folds Turn - 9:43 PM

Matt Stout raised to 1,300 and the button made the call. The flop came down {Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}{7-Spades} and Stout fired a continuation bet of 2,000. The player on the button made the call.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and Stout check-folded to a bet of 4,000 from his opponent.

Main Event Champion Jewell Shows Bluff - 9:46 PM

Early this morning at around 4:30 a.m. local time, Kurt Jewell won the WSOP Cicuit Hammond Main Event for over $242,000. Along with the title came a seat in this event and Jewell's doing well once again. He's up to about 100,000 chips and just picked a nice spot to bluff in order to add a good chunk to his stack.

Four players saw the flop for 2,100 each and it came down {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}. The preflop raiser fored 3,600 and David "Bakes" Baker folded before the next player called. Jewell was next up and raised to 8,750. Everyone folded and Jewell showed the old {4-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for the bluff.

“Bluffed It” - 9:55 PM

We've been watching Kenny Nguyen meander around the tournament floor for a couple minutes now, so we presumed him to be busto. It's hard to tell with Kenny, though, a can't-sit-still kind of guy. He began to make his way towards the double exit doors finally, and Amnon Filippi was the last man to shake his hand on the way out.

“Kenny, how many chips you got?” Fillipi asked.

“Bad,” was the reply from Nguyen, starting to walk away. He turned back around to yell, “Bluffed it,” as he headed back downstairs to the poker room or the pits.

Aguiar Ousted - 10:08 PM

Jonathan Aguiar got his last ~25,000 chips into the middle on a flop of {Q-} {10-} {4-}. Faraz Jaka was more than willing to put him to the test with a set, turning up pocket fours to put Aguiar and his ace-queen in a bad way. No help on the turn meant Aguiar was drawing dead, and he's been sent to the exit just before the break.

Ty Reiman Doubles - 10:09 PM

A short-stacked Ty Reiman was all in for 4,900 with {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} and was racing against an opponent’s {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades}, securing the double for Reiman to a little more than 11,000.
