Big Stacks Collide

Yair Alon was under the gun and raised to 40,000. Farid Nasserazad then reraised to 100,000 from the cutoff and Travis Lutes called from the small blind. Alon got out of the way and it was heads up between the two big stacks.

The flop came down {3-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades} and Lutes checked to Nasserazad, who bet 250,000. Lutes responded with a check-raise to 625,000 and Nasserazad moved all in. Lutes would have to put his tournament life on the line if he wanted to make the call. Instead, he opted to fold and preserve his remaining 985,000. With that win, Nasserazad takes a commanding chip lead of 2.7 million.

Robert Gunter Eliminated in 6th Place ($17,865)

Action folded to Robert Gunter in the hijack and he moved all in for his last 82,000. Bob Talbot was next to act and moved all in himself, which inspired the rest of the players to get out of the way.

Gunter: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Talbot: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

Gunter was in big trouble and couldn't improve as the board ran out {6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades}. Talbot won the pot and brought his stack up to 485,000; consequently, Gunter was eliminated from the tournament in sixth place.

Jerry Monroe Eliminated in 7th Place ($13,841)

It seems with every new hand comes another elimination. This time action folded to Jerry Monroe in the hijack and he pushed all in for 106,000 with {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Yair Alon was on the button and called with {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. The rest of the players got out of the way.

Monroe's big slick was highly favored to win, but that all changed when Alon paired his nine on the {9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop. Suddenly Monroe needed a king to stay alive. The {4-Hearts} on the turn was no help and neither was the {J-Diamonds} on the river. Alon won the pot and brought his stack to around 755,000 while Monroe was eliminated from the tournament in 7th place.

Steven Marshall Eliminated in 8th Place ($10,898)

We expected action to be fast based upon the chip differentials at the start of the day, and we were right. In the last hand, action folded to Steven Marshall in the small blind and he moved all in for his stack of 218,000. Yair Alon was in the big blind and made the call.

Marshall: {K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Alon: {K-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Alon was in great shape to eliminate his opponent as the flop fell {5-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Both players made a pair of kings but Alon's kicker was best. The {10-Diamonds} on the turn changed nothing while the {4-Hearts} river gave both players made two pair. Because Alon's jack kicker played, Marshall was eliminated in 7th place. Alon is up to 630,000.

John Holley Eliminated in 9th Place ($8,717)

On the very first hand of the final table, action folded to Farid Nasserazad in the cutoff and he raised to 60,000. John Holley was next to act on the button and he moved all in for 313,000. Nasserazad tanked before making the call.

Nasserazad: {A-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Holley: {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts}

Holley was in bad shape and the {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts} essentially sealed his fate. The {9-Hearts} on the turn gave him a flush draw, but the {3-Spades} on the river missed and Holley became out ninth-place finisher. Meanwhile, Nasserazad is up to 2.05 million.
