Return of the King

Huy Nguyen outlasted 808 players to take down the 2011 WSOPC Choctaw Main Event and $232,706 one year ago.

But it appeared he may not be able to defend that title, since he was rather busy playing out the final table of the WSOPC Choctaw's $345 Turbo event for most of the day today.

In the end he took down that title as well, and the $26,121 first-place prize it came with, just after the Main Event's second Day 1 heat began.

The celebration was a short one, however, as Nguyen has taken a seat in the Main Event now and is hoping his run good will continue.

Sengphet On the Move

We passed by La Sengphet's table not more than ten minutes ago and she had under the starting stack. Just now we found her with a stack near 60,000. We asked Sengphet to make sure we had the count right. She smiled and said, "Double, double."

She is now near the top of the counts for the evening flight.

Brunson Busto

Todd Brunson's WSOPC Choctaw Main Event is over.

He shipped it with a king-high flush draw against a player with pocket jacks and the turn and the river were no help.

Significantly Valued Poker Token Amounts

Niyati's Nuts

Dallas native Premo Niyati is among the early leaders here after he rode {k-}{10-} to a big win in a rather sizeable pot.

He flopped a gutshot against what he described as a rather nitty player and decided to lead out. After getting called, he turned the gutter and kept firing until most of the nit's chips were his.

Brunson Rebuilding

Todd Brunson got short and is working his way back up.
Todd Brunson got short and is working his way back up.

A player in the 4 seat opened for 600 and Todd Brunson re-raised to 1,800 behind him. Action folded back around to the original raiser and he called. The flop came {2-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {2-Diamonds}, the original raiser checked and Brunson bet 2,200. His opponent folded and Brunson collected the small pot. He's over 12,000 but has some serious work cut out for him to make a deep run.

The Main Event Redux

Down to his last 6k or so, 2008 November Niner Ylon Schwartz shipped it in on an {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} board, only to be snap called by fellow 2008 WSOP Main Event finalist Dennis Phillips.

Ylon, who finished fourth in that Main Event, turned over {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, but Phillips, who claimed third, held {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and the two were forced to chop.

See What Brown Can Do For You

Chad Brown
Chad Brown

Chad Brown is certainly enjoying this second Day 1 flight a little more than the first.

After busting to a rivered flush earlier today, he just made a massive hand to push up among the early leaders.

We picked up the hand on the turn with the board reading {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{9-Clubs} and Brown check-raising a 3k bet from his heads-up opponent, making it 6k.

Without hesitation, Brown's opponent made the call and the dealer peeled off the {4-Hearts} river. Brown quickly led out for 15k, his opponent shoved a little over 20,000 and Brown snap-called, turning over {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for a straight flush.

His opponent smiled, showed pocket nines for a rivered boat and sadly said goodbye.

Phillips On the Grind

Today has not been the greatest of days for Dennis Phillips. He busted in the early flight and is trying to gain traction this evening. He limped into in late position with three other players. The flop came {2-Spades} {6-Clubs} {A-Hearts}, an early position player bet 500, Phillips called and the other limpers folded. The turn was the {A-Spades} and both players checked. The river brought the {Q-Diamonds} and both players checked again.

His opponent announced king-five and Phillips tabled pocket tens to take the hand.
