Gavin Smith Wins Showdown With Jack-high

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Action folded around to Gavin Smith on the button and he quickly upped the action to 400. Both of the players in the blinds made the call.

The flop was {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. The first player checked before the next fired 625. Smith made the call and the third opponent got out of the way. Both remaining players checked the {5-Hearts} turn and the {a-Spades} river.

"Eight-high," Smith's opponent announced.

"Jack-high!" Smith said as he tabled {j-Spades}{7-Diamonds}.

The Champ is Not Here

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Seneca Easley crushed this event last year, going wire to wire with the chip lead. We were expecting to see him defend his title today, but we didn't see him in the first flight today, and we haven't seen him so far in Day 1b. On his twitter, he made references to being with his family today, leading us to believe that we won't be seeing him anytime soon. There will be a new champion in this event in 2012.

More Re-entrants

Robert Cheung and Ray Henson have both taken their seats for the second flight, meaning that the only notables we caught from the first run who haven't returned yet are Bryce Yockey and Michael Souza. We will keep an eye out for those two to see if they return.

Bonding Back For More

The board read {j-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{2-Spades} and Lars Bonding, who was eliminated earlier today in the Day 1a flight, led out for 1,100 in chips. The lone opponent in the hand was on the button and made the call.

The river was the {a-Diamonds} and Bonding bet 1,600. This time, however, his opponent raised to 3,500. Bonding mulled over his decision for awhile before finally letting his hand go and slipping back under starting stack.

Barnhart Gets Respect Early

We came to Sam Barnhart's table to see that he was getting involved early. Facing a raise to 250, and a call from La Sengphet, Barnhart raised to 1,050. The player in the big blind called, as did the original raiser, but Sengphet got out of the way.

The flop came out {2-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{3-Hearts}, and Barnhart wasted little time in betting out 1,300. The big blind folded, and the original raiser shook his head, folded {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} face up, and said, "ok now I believe you." Barnhart collected the pot, upping his stack to 22,000.
