Gates Drinks a Double

Garry Gates
Garry Gates

A middle-aged gentleman opened with a raise to 700 before Garry Gates three-bet shoved two seats over. It was 7,375 total, and the raiser spent about a minute in the tank before making the call for a fraction of his big stack.

Showdown
Raiser: {A-Spades} {5-Clubs}
Gates: {8-Spades} {8-Diamonds}

The flop brought an ace, but it came {4-Spades} {8-Clubs} {A-Clubs} to give Gates the big lead with two to come. He leaned far over the table to make sure that middle card was his set, and the turn {K-Diamonds} and river {Q-Hearts} locked up his double. He's back over 15,000 and back in business.

Losing Lee

Bernard Lee
Bernard Lee

Looking far across the room, we noticed that something was amiss, but it took a couple seconds for us to realize what it was. Bernard Lee was missing from the wide angle image we had in our heads from a couple minutes ago. Wandering over to his table, Jeff Banghart noticed us looking around for information. He obliged with all the details.

"Bernard opened to 775, Seat 9 made it 3,000. Bernard shoved with nines; Seat 9 had kings."

Well, there you go. Lee's Day 1a flight has come to an end with a cold four-bet, and our next plan is to see if Banghart is looking for some live reporting work over the summer.

Golden Doesn't Run Golden

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

A player under the gun min-raised to 600 and Darol Rodrock moved all in for just over 10,000. Kyle Golden called and action folded back around to the original raiser. He folded and the two hands were tabled.

Rodrock: {7-Hearts} {7-Spades}
Golden: {K-Hearts} {K-Spades}

The board ran {Q-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {5-Spades} and when Golden saw the {7-Diamonds} he stood up and walked away from the table.

"God, how do people play so bad?!" Golden said no one in particular. "He moved 10k into a 1,000 chip pot."

"You should have folded those kings," another player at the table said. Alluding to the fact that kings have been cracked several times at that table.

The board finished {5-Hearts} {5-Spades} and Golden walked around the room to work off some of the steam.

Easy Game For Bell

Chris Bell
Chris Bell

A player in middle position opened to 1,125, and Chris Bell three-bet to 3,175 on the button. The raiser asked how much he was playing (about 40,000 behind), then made the call. Bell had the much bigger of the two stacks as the dealer spread out a {10-Clubs} {J-Spades} {9-Hearts} flop. When the raiser checked, Bell put out a covering stack of gray chips. His opponent had about 11,000 chips left, and he quickly double-checked his cards before surrendering them into the muck.

Bell is up around 45,000 now, and his positional disadvantage against Kevin Saul has not been much of a factor yet, as far as we've seen. They're both comfortably above the chip average at the moment.

Where Did Huy Go Wrong?

Huy Nguyen
Huy Nguyen

We missed the hand that ended his day, but we've lost another former WSOPC Main Event Champion. Huy Nguyen took down the $1,600 event in Choctaw last season, and he's since added to his WSOPC stat sheet with a handful of other wins and final tables.

He'll have to wait for the evening session to try and amass a chip stack now, as he's run through his first bullet in the span of six levels.

Phillips Earns Benefit of the Doubt

From under the gun Ron McMillen opened to 1,350 and Dennis Phillips re-raised to 3,500 a couple seats behind him. Action folded back around to McMillen and he called after some short thought.

The flop came {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}, McMillen checked and Phillips moved all in. McMillen tanked and was having a hard time coming to a decision. "I should have never just called the 3,500..." he mumbled.

He flashed the {Q-Clubs} and claimed to have another a queen - but never showed it. Phillips quietly dragged the pot, never giving McMillen any assurance.
