Day 1 Wraps with Cavanaugh Leading

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Day 1 of the World Series of Poker Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs Main Event kicked off with two starting flights. Day 1a saw 192 players take to the felt with 96 advancing and Day 1b seated 88 players with 42 remaining. Leading them all is Casey Cavanaugh with a staggering 196,700 – 60,000 more than his closest competitor.

It should be noted that action for Day 2 is scheduled to start on Monday, April 9th at 11:00 am CST. Normally Day 2 would begin on Sunday, but due to the Easter holiday it was pushed back a day.

Chasing Cavanaugh is Leonel Contreras (137,300), Shaun McBride (126,300), Mark Kroon (114,600) and Matt Longcor (108,400).

Council Bluffs is usually a smaller stop on the WSOPC tour but plenty of seasoned pros turned up for the event. Mark “P0ker H0” Kroon, Bernard Lee, Scott Clements, Dennis Phillips, Kevin Saul, Garry Gates, Allen Kessler, Chris Bell, Amanda Musumeci, Drazen Ilich and Doug “Rico” Carli all made the trip to Iowa. Jacob Bazeley and Roland Isra also made the trip, but failed to advance to Day 2.

Cavanaugh won two key hands that gave him his chiplead. The first hand saw him make a full house holding pocket sevens on a {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} when his opponent had pocket threes. He doubled to over 130,000 at the point and only few minutes later he knocked out two players in one hand and pushed his stack to over 170,000.

The 138 remaining players will have a day off on Sunday for the Easter holiday. Day 2 will have cards in the air promptly at 11 a.m. CST on Monday and will play down to the final nine players or through level 23 – whichever comes first. Follow all the WSOPC action live on Pokernews.com.

Wrap it Up

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

The clock has just ticked down on this Day 1, and the bags are out. We're scurrying around for a few chip counts, and we'll be back with some closing arguments in a moment.

"Hey, Pokernews! Catch This Hand!"

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Matt Longcor opened the hand with a raise to 3,700 in early position. Justin Barnum was in the small blind and moved all in with just over 33,000. The big blind folded and action was back on Longcor.

While Longcor was mulling over his decision Barnum stood and yelled to grab our attention. "Hey Pokernews! We've got a big pot over here, you're gonna want to get this."

Longcor called after he tanked a short bit and the hands were tabled.

Barnum: {A-Hearts} {A-Spades}
Longcor: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}

The board ran {J-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} and the four diamonds on board cracked Barnum's aces. Barnum looked as if he'd been kicked in jewels and walked away with his head held low.

Baby Step Backwards for Bazeley

Jake Bazeley's quick comeback has us watching as interested onlookers now, and we just saw him open a pot to 1,400 in early position. It's always nice to have enough chips to escape push/fold mode. Bazeley's raise was called in two places, and off they went.

The dealer gave them {5-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {10-Spades} to work with. Bazeley continued out with 2,500, and that folded the first called. Becky Makar was the one in position, though, and she stuck in a raise to 6,000. Bazeley scowled and shook his head slowly before mucking, and he's dipped just below the 30,000-chip mark once again.

It's still a far cry from his sub-3,000-chip stack of an hour ago.

A player in middle position opened with a raise, and Huy Nguyen three-bet from the blinds before he was faced with an all-in four-bet. Nguyen called off his last 20,925 with {J-Spades} {J-Clubs}, and he was well in front. Mr. Opponent showed up {9-Spades} {10-Spades}.

The {A-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {5-Spades} flop was safe for Nguyen, but the {8-Spades} was a great turn card for Mr. Opponent. He picked up a combo draw to the knockout, but he could not get over the hump. The river {2-Diamonds} filled out the board.

Nguyen was up early, then back down, and now he's up once again. That doubles moves him up to about 44,000 chips.
