Stanko Stands Tall as Day 2 Concludes

Well, that's that for Day 2 of the WSOPC Council Bluffs Main Event. The day began with the 138 Day 1 survivors, plus another ten fresh faces hitting the felt late-reg style for the play down to the final table. It took more than fourteen hours, but just after the calendar hit Tuesday morning, the final hand was dealt out.

We'll let you read about all the action below, but suffice it to say that Scott Stanko carries the big stack into the overnight soak. He managed to bag up a whopping 1.481 million chips to put himself in the best position for tomorrow's finale. His count gives him just over 25% of the total chips in play. And there are still nine players left.

Joining Stanko at the final table will be a mixed bag of notables, pros, and amateurs that include a pair of men named Moore. One of them is Charles — better known as "Woody" around these parts — a regular on tour. He had quite the roller coaster of a day, but he finished on a strong note with 631,000 chips in his bag. Also still alive is Casey Cavanaugh, though his health was in some question early in the day. Not his tournament health — his actual health. The local bagged up the biggest stack of 196,000 on Day 1a, but he came to the felt sick with some stomach illness today.

He, um, forced the staff to call for a custodian at one point (if you get our drift), and he spent the rest of the day with a metal Miller Lite bucket in between his feet underneath the table. Just in case. Despite being barely functional from a medical standpoint, though, Cavanaugh fought off the early levels and managed to have quite a productive day. In the end, he worked it all the way up to 875,000, and that will put him in third place heading into the final table.

Speaking of that final table, here's how they'll be set up when play recommences:

1Charles Moore623,000
2Mark Bonsack283,000
3Stephen Ma928,000
4Pej Niyati875,000

6James Smith465,000
7Casey Cavanaugh745,000
8Scott Stanko1,481,000
9Jeremy Jagoda199,000

Action gets under way at the friendly hour of 2:00pm local time tomorrow from the Horseshoe Council Bluffs, and we'll be back inside the ropes as we crown a champion.

Until then, goodnight!

Niyati Takes Big Pot

Stephen Ma opened the action with a raise to 33,000, Pej Niyati called, as well as, Sean Moore and James Smth from the blinds. The four players watched the flop come {6-Spades} {6-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}. The blinds checked, Ma bet 50,000, Niyati called and the blinds released.

The turn came {3-Diamonds} and both Ma and Niyati cautiously checked. The river was the {10-Spades} and Ma bet 200,000. After short consideration Niyati announced call and tabled {Q-Spades} {9-Clubs} and Ma mucked.

Jagoda Sticks a Double

Casey Cavanaugh opened to 28,000 before Jeremy Jagoda shoved his last 92,000 into the middle. Cavanaugh made the quick call with a chance at the knockout. As he did, he asked, "You have a pair yet?" Jagoda nodded. "Well, you probably got me then," Cavanaugh surmised.

Showdown
Cavanaugh: {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs}
Jagoda: {6-Diamonds} {6-Hearts}

The board, please: {2-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {10-Spades} {2-Hearts} {4-Clubs}

We're not going anywhere just yet, and neither is Jagoda. That double moves him back into contention with more than 15bb for the first time in a long time.

Feeling 'Em Out

Level 21 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

We've played one full orbit of ten hands at the unofficial final table. During that orbit, we saw two flops, and zero turns and rivers. There hasn't been a pot over 60,000 so far in this feeling-out period.
