Day 1a Completed

Day 1a Concludes; Campanello Leads; Cartwright, Kessler In The Hunt

After 17 grueling levels of poker, Day 1a of the 2012-13 World Series of Poker Circuit Harrah's Tunica Main Event has come to a close. A grand total of 272 runners hit the felt and by the end of play a mere 37 survived. Leading the field is Bryan Campanello who will be taking a stack of 467,000 into Day 2. Campanello, fresh off of his final table appearance at the WSOP Circuit Choctaw Durant Main Event, grabbed hold of the chip lead late in the day and just kept climbing.

Rounding out the top three in chips are Chali Abebe (373,000) and Blake Whittington (370,500). Coming in at fourth in chips is none other than Cary Marshall, champion of the 2012-13 WSOPC Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event. Marshall played a very aggressive game for most of the day and it paid off, as he never relinquished his spot among the leaders of the tournament.

Other notable names who will return to the felt for Day 2 include David Clark (288,000), Kyle Cartwright (161,500), last-woman-standing Patricia Pate (118,000), Matthew Colvin (111,500), Aaron Massey (104,00), and Mark Maletic (69,000).

Also returning on Day 2 is Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler. Kessler was quiet for a majority of the day but found his stack growing almost in an instant late in play. A short-stacked Kessler was able to flop trips during one hand to double up and then double up the very next hand again through Massey. With the blinds at 1,200/2,400/400, Kessler then dealt the killing blow to Claudia Crawford when the two took a flop of {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. After unknown flop action, the turn brought the {K-Hearts} and Kessler tapped the table. Crawford moved 25,000 into the center and Kessler wasted little time making it 61,000 to go. Crawford announced all in and Kessler, who had her covered by a mere 2,000, called.

Kessler: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Crawford: {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}

Kessler flopped the nut flush and Crawford flopped middle set. Crawford still had outs to make a full house and finish with the best hand, but when the {9-Hearts} struck the river her fate was sealed. She exited roughly two hours before the end of the day while Kessler's stack increased to over 200,000. Kessler finished the day with 184,500 and will be bringing that stack into Day 2.

While all of those players thrived, others saw all of their chips vanish before the end of play. Players like November-Niner John Dolan, Ari Engel, AP Phahurat, Seneca Easley, Tripp Kirk, Andrew Nguyen, Chris Moneymaker, and defending champion Kurt Jewell were all among those to be sent to the rail. Hope remains for those players, however, as they all have the option of re-entering for the Day 1b flight.

Day 1b kicks off at 12:00 CST in the Harrah's Tunica Event Center. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for all of the updates as players take their last chance to make Day 2.

Clark Six-Bet Shoves

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

We got to the table just in time to see David Clark six-bet shove all in before the flop for 190,500 into one-time chip leader Ryan Stevenson. Stevenson already had over 65,000 invested in the middle and after about forty-five seconds finally decided to release his cards, awarding Clark the pot. Stevenson now has about 250,000 to Clark's 270,000.

One For Marshall

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Cary Marshall raised to 8,000 from early position and received a call from the player in the big blind.

The flop was {10-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{8-Hearts} and Marshall's opponent check-called 11,000. Both players checked the {2-Diamonds} on fourth street and the {A-Spades} completed the board. Another check to Marshall prompted a bet of 22,000. His opponent laid it down and Marshall showed the tabled {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} as he dragged in the pot. He's sitting on about 240,000 now.

Winding Down

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Play is finally beginning to slow down with only 40 players left in the hunt. There seems to be less action happening as certainly those left in the field are guaranteed to return for Day 2 in a mere thirty minutes.

Maletic Grinding

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Mark Maletic opened to 5,300 from the cutoff and it folded to the player in the big blind who called. The flop brought {A-Clubs}{4-Spades}{J-Hearts} and Maletic's opponent checked. Maletic continued for 6,100 and his opponent tanked for about forty-five seconds before finally released. Maletic has been slowly grinding as of late and is currently sitting just around 100,000.
