Mike Bennett Leads Final 249 After Two Starting Flights

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Mike Bennett - Chip Leader
Mike Bennett - Chip Leader

On Saturday, the 2012-13 World Series of Poker Circuit Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event kicked off. A total of 646 total entrants ponied up the $1,675 entry fee in hopes of making the illustrious second day of play. Mike Bennett was the man sitting on all of the chips at the end of the first flight as he was able to overcome the 388 entrants and build his stack to 213,900. The second flight drew 258 entrants and saw Jonathan Bakhshian accumulate the largest stack as he finished the night with 149,300 in chips.

Bennett accumulated a solid chunk of his stack toward the end of the first flight when he was involved in a hand during the 500/1,000/100 level. He opened with a raise, an opponent three-bet to 5,100, and action folded back to Bennett when made it 12,000 to go. His opponent called, and the flop brought {J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{A-Spades}. Two checks prompted the {8-Hearts} to appear on the turn, and Bennett fired 10,000. His opponent flat-called, and the {7-Clubs} completed the board. Bennett moved all in .and his opponent debated calling off his last 16,000. Eventually, the player released his cards, and Bennett showed the {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} for top set.

Also moving forward to Day 2 is Jared Jaffee, who, despite several setbacks throughout the day, managed to finish his run in the first starting flight with a stack of 80,700. Jaffee was forced to make big lay downs throughout the day, and our Live Reporting Team was fortunate enough to catch two examples of these folds.

Jaffee first had to release pocket jacks in a large pot. A few hours later, he was forced to fold queens before the flop, doing so face up.

Other notable names and big stacks moving on from the first starting flight include Chris Rauscher (165,300), Mark Kerness (154,400), Natasha Barbour (133,200), Tripp Kirk (89,300), Pedro Rios (62,200), Lee Childs (61,300), Bryan Campanello (59,300), Jonathan Tamayo (53,400), Mark Maletic (34,300) and Adam Levy (30,500).

As the first flight came to a close and 139 players bagged up for Day 2, the second round of runners took their seats for their shot at poker glory. The field included both first-time participants in the event as well as those who busted from the first flight and wished to re-enter.

As previously mentioned, Bakhshian finished the second flight with the largest stack in the room. He bagged 149,300 and earned a good portion of those toward the end of the night when he slayed Aaron Overton.

The flop read {5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}, and Bakshian snap-shoved all in at the sight of the flop for more than two times the pot. Overton quickly called for his tournament life.

Bakhshian: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}
Overton: {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

Overton's set of fives were ahead, but he met his ultimate demise when the {K-Clubs} turned and the {10-Clubs} rivered, giving Bakhshian a club flush and the best hand.

Notable names among the 110 runners to advance from the second flight include Ryan Carter (141,200), Harrison Gimbel (106,900), Clint Tolbert (96,100), Josh Arieh (85,500), David Nicholson (77,600), David Diaz (43,200), Rex Clinkscales (33,300) and Ylon Schwartz (29,600).

Players who were unable to survive either one or both starting flights include Shaun Deeb, Huy Nguyen, DJ MacKinnon, Cary Marshall, Ari Engel, Sam Cohen, Travell Thomas and John Esposito.

Play resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. EST where the final 249 players will once again take to the felt. Be sure to join PokerNews as we provide you with all of the big pots, bad beats and bust outs moving forward.

Over for Overton

Aaron Overton - Eliminated
Aaron Overton - Eliminated

Aaron Overton and Jonathan Bakhshian were heads up in a three-bet pot with the board reading {5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Bakshian instantly moved all in, wagering what looked like more than two times the pot, and Overton instantly called.

"You flopped it?" Bakhshian exclaimed.

"Yeah," Overton said, turning over {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} for a set of fives.

Bakhshian unhappily spiked {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} onto the felt.

"You still have outs," Overton said, annoyed.

The turn was the {k-Clubs}.

"There's one," Overton announced.

The river was the {10-Clubs}.

"And there's the other," said Overton. "Fun."

Bakhshian made a flush, eliminating Overton from the tournament. Bakhshian now sits with around 150,000 chips.

Another Tough Fold for Jaffee

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jared Jaffee
Jared Jaffee

Faced with what looked like a three-bet to 3,025, Jared Jaffee, who made a tough fold earlier, four-bet to 7,800. It folded back to the three-bettor, who immediately spun a card protector that was sitting on top of his chips. He shifted around somewhat uncomfortably looking in his chair, then reached in his pocket for a coin. He flipped it into the air, and it sloppily landed right in front of Jaffee.

Seeing that it was heads, the player grabbed all of his chips and moved all in for 37,425. Jaffee laughed.

"If that came up tails, were you folding?" Jaffee asked the player.

The player grinned, then said, "No."

Jaffee laughed to himself once more, tanked for two minutes or so, then folded the {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} face up.

The player mucked face down, then raked in the pot.

Jerry Yang has been eliminated from Day 1a of the 2012-13 World Series of Poker Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event. We unfortunately missed the action, but Filipp Khavin was kind enough to let us in on the details.

Welcome to Day 1!

Good morning, and welcome to sunny Florida for Day 1 of the 2012-13 World Series of Poker Circuit Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be bringing you exclusive, up-to-the-minute updates from both starting flights today, with Day 1a starting at 11 a.m. EST. Day 1b, the second flight, will begin at 7 p.m. EST.

Jim Harnden won this event last year, earning $226,395, the gold ring and a seat in the WSOP Circuit National Championship. Harnden topped a field of 778 runners, eventually besting Rob Williamson heads up. Williamson earned $139,574 for his runner-up finish.

Joining Williamson and Harnden at the final table were notables Roman Valerstein and Drazen Illich. Illich bowed out in sixth place, while Valerstein took fourth. Brian Hastings, one of the toughest heads-up cash game players in the world, bubbled the final table, busting in 11th place.

If the preliminary events are any indication of what's to come in this event, the field size should be huge and the prize pool bursting.

The opening event attracted the largest field of the 2012-13 WSOP Circuit season thus far. The $580 buy-in re-entry event had 2,539 entrants, making it the second largest major poker tournament ever held in Florida, and Lou Cheffy, a financial planner from Naples, Florida, bested the large field to collect $183,983 in prize money along with his first WSOP Circuit gold ring. The final table included David Nicholson, who has four WSOP Circuit rings, and John Holley, who has two.

The cards will be in the air shortly, so stay tuned right here for the live coverage straight from the floor to your screen.
