Southern Comfort 100 Proof National Championship

Day 2 Completed

Brock Parker Leads the National Championship Final Table

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

The Southern Comfort 100 Proof World Series of Poker National Championship final table was set on Thursday at Harrah’s New Orleans, and leading the eight-handed official final table is two-time WSOP bracelet winner Brock Parker. Parker bagged 825,000, and the only other players to bag more than 700,000 chips were fellow bracelet winner Max Steinberg (738,000) and 2012 Octo-Niner Jeremy Ausmus (799,000).

Of the 126 entrants, 62 players returned for Day 2, and they were joined by two-time WSOP bracelet winner and late registrant Jason Mercier. Unfortunately for Mercier he was cut short of the money, but not before he booked a profitable last longer bet with Jason Koon. Koon ran into Austin Buchanan’s aces on the first hand of the day, and was eliminated shortly there after.

Despite being the last player to register, Mercier also outlasted his friends Brent Hanks and Kyle Julius. Hanks lost a series of hands leaving him short stacked, leading him to jam out of the small blind with nine-five off suit. Joe Tehan looked him up with pocket sevens and held. Julius lost a massive pot against Blake Barousse, where both players turned a flush. Unfortunately for Julius, Barousse held the nuts, and the Chicagoan was sent packing.

Joining those two on the rail before the money bubble were Dominik Nitsche, Mark Bonsack, Wade Woelfel, Alex Bylicki, Joe Kuether, Jeff Gross, and start-of-day chip leader Valentin Vornicu.

Vornicu, the Harrah’s Rincon Casino Champion, five-bet all in for 145,000, and Tim Bowman, winner of the Harrah’s Cherokee Main Event, re-shoved. The rest of the action folded, and Vornicu rolled over two red jacks only to see Bowman’s black aces. The aces held, and Vornicu was eliminated.

The bubble burst shortly thereafter when Steve Hesse five-bet shoved with two jacks. Parker, who was the four-bettor, was pot committed, and called with king-queen. He flopped a pair of queens and held when the turn and river both produced bricks.

The first players to exit in the money were Sam Panzica, Andrew Robinson, Jim Willerson, and Jarod Ludemann. Willerson was eliminated in a wild hand wherein Hilton opened for a raise, Willerson three-bet shoved, and Steinberg put in a cold four-bet. Hilton five-bet shoved, Steinberg quickly called, and all three hands were tabled.

Hitlon: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Steinberg: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Willerson: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}

Hilton held as the board came {5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{3-Hearts}, eliminating Willerson. Hilton shot up to 680,000 chips, and ended up bagging 588,000.

The next three players to go were Ashly Butler, Rex Clinkscales, and Pavlin Karakikov. Karakikov was in great shape to double up with two kings against Steinberg’s ace-ten, but Steinberg made Broadway on the turn. Karakikov needed the board to pair or a fourth diamond to complete the board, but the river was a meaningless black three, and the final nine players combined to make an unofficial final table.

On the final hand of the night, Austin Apicella was eliminated in ninth place, bubbling the ESPN televised final table. After losing a small pot to Ausmus he then three-bet shoved over an open from the Octo-Niner. Ausmus called with two jacks, which dominated Apicella’s king-jack, and Apicella received no help from the five community cards.

The final eight players will return on Friday at 2 p.m. to battle it out for the top prize of $355,599 and the first 2013 WSOP bracelet to be awarded on American soil. Be sure to check back to PokerNews.com for all of your up-to-the-minute updates straight from the tournament floor.

Austin Apicella Eliminated in 9th Place ($30,785)

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Jeremy Ausmus opened to 25,000 on the button, Austin Apicella three-bet shoved for 135,000 from the small blind, and Ausmus quickly called.

Ausmus: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Apicella: {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Ausmus had Apicella dominated, but the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop gave him four extra outs to make Broadway. With any king or ten Apicella would survive, but neither the turn ({8-Spades}) nor the river ({3-Hearts}) were of any help.

Apicella exited in ninth place, earning $30,785, and the official final table of eight is now set. We will bring full counts and the recap to you shortly.

Apicella in Danger

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Just before the break, Austin Apicella opened to 20,000 from under the gun, Jeremy Ausmus called in the big blind, and the dealer fanned {8-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{q-Hearts}. Ausmus check-called a 21,000-chip bet, and both players checked when the {5-Clubs} turned.

The {2-Diamonds} completed the board, Ausmus led out for 40,000, and Apicella tank-called. Ausmus showed {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a pair of nines, and Apicella mucked.

Hilton Doubles Again

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Joe Tehan opened to 20,000 from the cutoff, Jonathan Hilton three-bet to 52,000 from the big blind, and Tehan four-bet jammed for effectively 266,000. Hilton made the call, and we were off to the races.

Tehan: {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Hilton: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

"Four sides!" Bryan Campanello yelled from the rail.

Hilton didn't need another ten to peel off, all he needed to do was fade paint, and he did when the dealer fanned {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Tehan picked up backdoor club outs, but those hopes disappeared when the {6-Diamonds} turned.

Tehan needed paint to secure the knockout and end the evening, but it was not to be as the {5-Hearts} completed the board. Hilton doubled with a full house fives over tens, and now sits with 556,000 chips. Tehan is among the short stacks with 216,000.

Tehan Almost Brings Us to an Official Final Table

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Before the two tables could break, Joe Tehan almost brought us to an official final table of eight.

He opened to 20,000 in the cutoff, Nicolas Vaca-Rondon three-bet all in for 100,000 in the big blind, and Tehan asked for a count before tank-called with {k-Spades}{3-Spades}. He was live against Vaca-Rondon's {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, and flopped a straight draw when the dealer fanned {2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}, but the turn and river both bricked {9-Spades}, {9-Hearts} respectively.

Vaca-Rondon doubled to 210,000 chips, while Tehan dropped down to 397,000.
