Who'll Make the Money in Council Bluffs? We'll Find Out Today!

The Horseshoe Council Bluffs.
The Horseshoe Council Bluffs.

Yesterday, both Day 1 flights of the 2012-13 World Series of Poker Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs Main played out as a combined 362 players turned out for their shot at WSOP Circuit glory and a seat into the National Championship. After 12 levels of play, just 133 players remain. Given that registration is open until the start of play today, that number is sure to go up a little.

Leading today's field is Scott Sharpe, who amassed a huge stack of 289,500 on Day 1b.

“I ran good,” Sharpe told PokerNews. “Coolered a few people, to be honest.” Sharpe, who has finished runner-up in two previous WSOP Circuit events, was modest when asked how it felt to bag up the chip lead. “Long way to go still."

Other big stacks entering the day are Mark Fink (165,900) and Kelly Cortum (140,000). The former won a ring here at the Horseshoe Council Bluffs just a couple of days ago and currently leads the stop's Casino Championship, while the latter ended up as the Day 1a chip leader.

Other notables still in contention include defending champ Scott Stanko (19,500), Larry Ormson (23,600), Allen Kessler (31,300), Alex Masek (32,400), Rex Clinkscales (43,800), Brett Schwertley (59,400), Ari Engel (63,000), Grant Hinkle (78,500), Kou Vang (88,300) and Robert Cheung (92,500)

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Level 13 : 700/1,400, 200 ante

The players are now in their seats and cards are in the air. Today's Main Event is taking place alongside the Ladies Event, and we'll see if we can't drop an update or two on that event throughout the day.

Bradshaw Busts Karambinis

Level 13 : 700/1,400, 200 ante

Action folded around to Chris Karambinis in the hijack and he put in a raise. Kristopher Bradshaw was on the button and pushed back with an all-in three-bet, and after the blinds folded, Karambinis called off for a little less than 20,000.

Karambinis: {Q-Spades}{8-Spades}
Bradshaw: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Karambinis was in need of some help but failed to get any as the board ran out a dry {5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}.

Fish Sends Ormson to Rail

Level 13 : 700/1,400, 200 ante

Larry Ormson opened to 8,000 in late position.

"Hold on," Brandon Fish said from the small blind, as he counted Ormson's remaining stack and decided what to do. After some thought, he raised to 20,000 and the big blind folded. Ormson called all in and the players showed their cards:

Fish: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}
Ormson: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

The flop came {5-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and Ormson looked to be golden. However, the {4-Clubs} fell on the turn, giving Fish a glimmer of hope, and the {K-Clubs} sealed Ormson's fate. Fish now has around 50,000 chips.

Young Dodges Outs

Level 13 : 700/1,400, 200 ante

We found Kurt Young at Table 47 considering an all-in raise from Paul Silverstein on an {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} board. Young called to put Silverstein at risk, and his {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} was in a virtual flip with Silverstein's {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. A {5-Clubs} on the turn and a {K-Hearts} on the river brought Silverstein no help, and he hit the rail as Young stacked his chips.

Reid's Turn to Lose with Jack-Ten of Diamonds

Level 13 : 700/1,400, 200 ante

Action folded around to Steven Figgins in the cutoff and he limped, prompting Edward Reid to do the same from the button. The small blind put in the extra 700, Scott Stanko checked his option in the big, and it was four-way action to the {5-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} flop.

Three checks put action on Reid and he moved all in for roughly 13,000. The small blind and Stanko both folded, but Figgins made the call.

Figgins: {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Reid: {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Reid held the same hand Paul Silverstein had minutes before at the same table, and just like him, he'd miss his plethora of outs as the {6-Clubs} appeared on the turn followed by the {9-Hearts} on the river.
