Robert James Leads as 30 Advance From Day 1a of the 2019 WSOPC Horseshoe Southern Indiana Main Event

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Robert James
Robert James

Day 1a of the 2019 World Series of Poker Circuit Horseshoe Southern Indiana $1,700 Main Event saw 158 entrants battle it out, and after fifteen levels of play, just 30 managed to survive the day with Robert James and his 414,500 chip stack leading a talented pack of players.

James was active early and often, as evidenced by this early hand that saw James runner-runner a full house on an unlucky foe who flopped a straight and turned a flush. James, who won a $250 Monster Stack event at Horseshoe Southern Indiana in April during the Midwest Regional Poker Championship and owns a WSOPC ring, will be looking to improve on last year's ninth-place finish with his massive Day 1 stack.

Rounding out the top three stacks are Alexander Fininzio (364,500) and Richard Langdon (296,000). Others that managed to find a bag in today's flight include WSOP Bracelet winners Kyle Cartwright (180,000) and Alan Percal (172,000), Daniel Sepiol (155,000), Jake Bazeley (130,500), and Jerod Smith (106,500).

Tim Garles managed to earn his first career WSOPC ring on Friday in Event #9: $400 No-Limit Hold'em but was unable to make it through today's Main Event flight and go for his second. Likewise, WSOP Bracelet winners Brett Apter and Alex Ziskin were unable to survive, and Nick Pupillo and Ravi Raghavan were also unable to make it to the end of the day's play.

Saturday marks the final time players will be able to attempt to fire the Main Event, as Day 1b kicks off at 11 a.m. local time. Players will again play fifteen levels, with a fifteen-minute break after every three levels and a sixty-minute dinner break after Level 9. Registration remains open through the beginning of Level 13, or approximately 8:45 p.m. local time.

Be sure to stay tuned right here to PokerNews to follow all the action as we get one step closer towards crowning our latest WSOPC Main Event ring winner here in Elizabeth, Indiana at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino and Hotel!

Horsman Saves Lamkin's Sanity

Bill Horsman
Bill Horsman

With 20,000 in the pot, Bill Horsman had jammed for 260,000 from the big blind on a {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{8-Spades} board. Joseph Lamkin, who had 38,000 in front of him from under the gun, still had 185,000 behind and a big decision on his hands.

"Please give me a few minutes before y'all call the clock...he's got as many chips as I do," Lamkin said, shaking his head at the situation.

Lamkin took a few minutes before folding, and Horsman said, "Don't wanna drive you crazy," before tabling {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for the nuts. Lamkin leapt up and pumped his fist, telling the table, "Sevens!" in reference to the fact that he laid down a straight to Horsman's shove.

The {6-Diamonds} fell on the turn, and Garles checked again. The button bet 7,000, and Garles called again.

Garles checked for a third time on the {k-Clubs} river, and the button bet 5,500. Garles quickly called, and the button said, "You're good." Garles flipped over {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a flush draw that ended up with top pair on the river, and he took down the pot.

Robert James
Robert James

On a {10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop, action checked over to the hijack, who bet 3,500 into a pot of 6,000. Robert James called on the button, and the blinds folded.

Both players checked the {4-Clubs} turn, and the {q-Spades} hit the river. The hijack bet 3,000, and James raised to 12,000.

"If you show me a bluff, I'll give you money out of my pocket," the hijack told James after a few moments of thought. The hijack eventually folded, flashing the {a-Clubs} and saying, "Ace-ten."

James turned over {q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for two pair on the river, and the hijack told James, "One of these days, you're not going to river me..."

Smith Gets a Dub Through Harvell

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
Jerod Smith
Jerod Smith

Two-time WSOPC ring winner Justin Harvell had 3,300 in front of him from middle position, and was contemplating an all in bet from WSOPC Ameristar St. Charles Casino Champ Jerod Smith on the button for 9,200. Harvell didn't look thrilled, but put in calling chips after a short stint in the tank.

"Slowroll!" Smith said with a grin before tabling his hand.

Jerod Smith: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Justin Harvell: {k-Spades}{4-Clubs}

"Yes! That's what I wanted!" Harvell said with a laugh upon seeing his hand was live.

The {9-Hearts}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts} flop and {8-Diamonds} turn brought to help for either player, and the {q-Spades} river secured the double for Smith.

Ryan Van Sanford: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Byron Hubert
Byron Hubert

The full {10-Spades}{q-Spades}{a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} board was already on the felt when the big blind checked over to Byron Hubert, who bet 4,000 from under the gun.

The big blind went into the tank for a minute, looking over the 9,000 in the pot, and at one point stacked up all of his big denomination chips, looking down as he did. He eventually plucked four yellow 1,000 chips out of the stack and called, only to quickly mucka fter Hubert tabled {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}.
