Messina Takes Day 1a Chip Lead in the WSOP International Circuit Main Event in Holland Casino Rotterdam

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Renato Messina
Renato Messina

Day 1a of the WSOP International Circuit Main Event, the first of three starting flights at the Holland Casino Rotterdam, has come to an end after twelve levels of 40 minutes each. The first flight attracted 130 entries total with 41 players making it through to Day 2 which will take place on Wednesday, November 20, at 1 p.m. local time.

The chip lead was claimed by Renato Messina, an Italian player who resides in Malta, with 237,000 in chips worth 119 big blinds at the start of Day 2. Messina collected most of those chips when he eliminated his opponent with a runner-runner straight flush while the other player had turned a full house. Messina is followed closely by Rashed Zade with 228,000. Zade had steadily been chipping up throughout the day and even eliminated Martin Paap just before the end of the day.

The only other player to have bagged over the 200,000-mark was Jerome Riverola with 206,000. Riverola who caught Simon Burns’ bluff at some point during the day to sent the Brit packing. Other familiar players who found a bag at the end of the day include Kevin Paqué, Jean-Philippe Schoonbrood, Firoz Mangroe, Danny van Zijp, Kees Aerts, WSOP bracelet winner Marcel Vonk, Tobias Peters, and Vojtech Ruzicka with a short-stack.

PokerNews’ very own Eric Mertens tagged 116,000 chips after having flopped the higher full house earlier today and scooping another pot with top two pair.

Unfortunately, not everyone was lucky enough to win their final all-in. Recent ring winners Wim Neys and Rens Feenstra both tried to make Day 2 but fell at the final hurdle. The same fate befell another WSOP bracelet holder, Albert Hoekendijk. Govert Metaal, Michel Molenaar, Gregor Prizmic Martini, Serghei Lisiy, Abdelhakim Zoufri, Mark Roovers, Zhong Chen, Ramon Miquel Munoz, and many more will need to try again on one of the other starting days.

The Main Event will take a break for a day as the first day of the High Roller will take place on Monday at 5 p.m. local time. The Main Event itself will resume with Day 1b on Tuesday, November 19 at 2 p.m. local time and Day 1c on the same day at 10 p.m., a turbo flight with 20-minute levels.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand for both events so make sure to return for more exciting updates from Europe’s largest port.

Messina Hits a Runner-Runner Straight Flush

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Renato Messina
Renato Messina

Renato Messina had just played the biggest pot of the tournament up till now and his table mate was kind enough to relay the information.

Messina had opened from the early position for 1,800 and was called by four other players to go five-way to the flop which was the {10-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. It was checked to the player on the button who bet 5,000 and only Messina called.

The turn was the {q-Clubs} and both players checked.

The river completed the board with the {9-Clubs}, Messina fired a bet of 18,000 over the line and the player on the button shoved for around 100,000. Messina snap-called with {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for the runner-runner straight flush and saw he was good as his opponent had {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for the turned full house.

Table #14 was broken up in the meanwhile and Taoufik Ahkim has taken his seat on Messina's left for the two biggest stacks in the room to be seated next to each other.

Eric Mertens raised to 1,300 from the early position and was called by the player in the middle position and Zhong Chen in the cutoff. The player on the button tanked for a while before three-betting to 4,800. The blinds quickly folded while the rest all called.

The flop came {4-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, it was checked around to the player on the button who continued with a bet of 6,100. Mertens took a few seconds before making the call while the rest folded.

The turn was the {q-Hearts}, Mertens check-called the 12,000 continuation-bet of his opponent.

The river completed the board with the {a-Clubs}. Both players quickly checked for Mertens to scoop the pot with {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for top two pair.

Neys Takes Kampen Out

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mikos Kampen
Mikos Kampen

Wim Neys had quite an increased stack after the break and was kind enough to relay what had happened just before the break.

Neys had opened from under the gun with {4-}{4-} and was called by Mikos Kampen in the hijack and the player on the button.

The flop came {a-Spades}{4-Spades}{4-} for Neys to hit quads. Neys continued with a bet of 1,200 and Kampen was the only one to make the call.

The turn was a blank, Neys bet again, this time 4,300 and Kampen called again.

The river completed the board with the {j-Clubs}, Neys overbet-shoved for 22,000 and Kampen tank-called with a stack of 22,300. Kampen had {3-}{3-} to be left with a mere 300 which he lost shortly after.

As Level 8 is the last level for players to late-reg or reenter, Kampen jumped back in immediately.

Third Edition of the WSOP International Circuit Main Event in Rotterdam Starts at 2 PM

Tobias Peters will be defending his title in Rotterdam
Tobias Peters will be defending his title in Rotterdam

Welcome to the first day of the PokerNews coverage of the World Series of Poker International Circuit in Holland Casino Rotterdam. The action will kick off at 2 p.m. local time with Day 1a of the €1,100 Main Event which features a fantastic guaranteed prize pool of €250,000.

Day 1a is the first of three starting flights with Day 1c as a turbo edition. The winner of the Main Event will not only win a beautiful WSOP Circuit Ring and money but that person will also lay claim to a $10,000 seat for the WSOP Global Casino Championship.

This is the third time that the stunning location plays host to the WSOPC, in 2017 it was Eyal Bensimhon who defeated the 273-strong field and won €94,349 for being victorious. Last year it was the 2018 GPI National Player of the Year, Tobias Peters who took down the title by defeating Bart Beens heads-up for €67,766 when the tournament attracted 181 entries. Both those Main Events featured a buy-in of €1,650 which has been reduced to €1,100 this year.

This isn't the first ring event in Rotterdam, three rings have already been handed out to Wim Neys, Jurjan Wadman, and Danny Koehoorn in the PSKO 8-Max, Starter Event, and the Bounty Turbo respectively.

When the players cough up the €1,100 buy-in for the Main Event, they will get 30,000 in chips and play 40-minute levels. Day 1 has 12 levels scheduled with a 15-minute break after every three levels. A 60-minute dinner break has been planned after the sixth level of play. Registration will remain open until the end of Level 8 and unlimited reentries are allowed during those eight levels.

If players fail to make it through Day 1a, Day 1b will take place on Tuesday, November 19 at 2 p.m. local time with Day 1c at 9 p.m. For both Day 1a and Day 1b, there’s only space for 150 players at a time and Day 1c has allocated 50 seats at a time for those players.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be there from the start till finish so make sure to follow along with the updates!
