Pons Below Average Despite Winning a Pot

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Fernando Pons
Fernando Pons

Fernando Pons started the day as the overall chip leader but he dropped below the tournament average. Pons did pick up a pot to help him in the right direction.

It folded to Pons on the button and the former November Niner raised to 10,000. Big blind Mouloud called and they saw the {8-Hearts}{A-Spades}{A-Hearts} flop appear. Mouloud checked to Pons who continued with a bet of 7,000. Mouloud called.

The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and Mouloud checked again to the Spaniard. Pons fired another bet of 12,000 this time and he was called once more.

The {4-Hearts} river completed the board and both players checked. Mouloud showed {Q-Spades}{6-Clubs} but that was no good against the {K-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} of Pons.

Atoui Runs to Chip Lead

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Kamel Atoui
Kamel Atoui

Kamel Atoui is a very active player and he pulled off a big bluff yesterday on Day 1B. He's back to playing aggressively again today and just won a pot to attain the chip lead.

Atoui opened from early position to 8,000 and Orey Canarinho defended his big blind when it folded around to him. The flop came down {A-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. Canarinho went for the check-call route and called a bet of 13,000 from Atoui to see the turn.

The turn was the {5-Clubs} and Canarinho checked again. Atoui bet 27,000 this time and Canarinho took a little bit longer to make up his mind. He flicked in a call and they went to the river.

The dealer put down the {6-Diamonds} and Canarinho checked to Atoui for the third and final time. Atoui fired once more as he put 35,000 in the middle. Canarinho called after a minute, only to see Atoui open up {6-Spades}{5-Spades} for runner-runner two pair. Canarinho mucked and Atoui has now well over half a million in front of him.
