Painful Runners Eliminate Roy

Roy Winston was eliminated after he called his opponent's all-in shove on the river, only to see that his opponent had caught a running straight. The straight was good enough to send Winston home and as he left the table he muttered, "That was painful."

We Have a Jennifer Tilly Sighting

Jennifer Tilly has just been spotted in today's field, but we aren't sure how long she will be here. She was just involved in a hand that left her very short-stacked. On a board of {3-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, Tilly's opponent pushed all in against Tilly and she was forced to fold. Her opponent showed A-Q. After the hand Tilly is down to 680.

Justin Bonomo Eliminated

Justin Bonomo opened for a raise to 175 from middle position. Liz Lieu called from late position, as did the blinds. The four players took a flop of {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}. The blinds checked and Bonomo bet 375. Lieu passed and the small blind raised to 800. The big blind passed and Bonomo made the call. It was heads up to the turn, which brought the {A-Diamonds}. After a check from the big blind, Bonomo bet 900 and the big blind pushed. Bonomo called for his tournament life and the players showed:

Bonomo: {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Opponent: {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}

The river fell the {K-Spades}, missing Bonomo and eliminating him. He joins the handful of other notables sent home very early in day 1b.

Chop It Up

Andy Black, with a string of brown beads dangling from his neck, limped on the button behind two other players. Both blinds joined the pot for a flop of {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{6-Spades}. One player bet 150 and Black was the only caller. The turn came {5-Diamonds} and Black again called a bet, this time of 200. When his opponent checked the {6-Diamonds} river, Black quickly fired out 300. His opponent called just as quickly. Black flipped over the {A-Spades}; his opponent showed the {A-Diamonds}. Black then revealed the {2-Spades}; his opponent opened the {7-Clubs}. Black grinned mischievously as the dealer declared a chopped pot and pushed Black's share of the pot to him.

Jerry Yang Eliminated

Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang led out for 200 preflop and was called by two players. The flop came {J-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and after the player in early position checked, Yang pushed all in for his remaining 400 in chips. The late-position player called while the early-position player folded. Yang turned over {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, while his opponent showed {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. The turn was the {6-Spades} and Yang was eliminated after the river brought the {6-Hearts}.

An Interesting Announcement from the Floor Staff

In addition to the bracelet events that occur during the World Series of Poker, there are also tournaments held every night that players can take a shot at to build their bankrolls. The tournaments do not award bracelets, but they do award cold, hard cash.

An announcement was just made that, in addition to cash prizes, players can also earn Player of the Year points for various different Player of the Year races, not including the WSOP Player of the Year. It will be interesting to see if this drums up any additional interest in the evening tournaments.

Mortensen Making Moves

Carlos Mortensen open-limped from early position and the player in the hijack position raised it to 350. The player on the button then made it 900 to go before Mortensen casually grabbed his entire stack and pushed it into the middle. The player in the hijack insta-folded and the button went into the tank.

"Man, do you have aces?" questioned the player, but Mortensen was motionless. The former eventually laid down his hand and Mortensen makes some early progress to now sit with 4,500 in chips.

Chiu Likes the Dark

Our field reporters caught the action on the turn. With a board of {3-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} David Chiu led out for 125, was raised, and without counting, grabbed a few chips and reraised. His opponent called and the {J-Hearts} fell on the river. Chiu shoved all in for 2,400 and his opponent folded. Chiu had been playing the entire hand in the dark, and while scooping up the pot laughed, "I knew what he had. I don't know what I had."

Another Familiar Face

Chris "Jesus" Ferguson has just joined us here in the Tropical Room, and has wasted no time engaging the table in a little friendly banter. Reading a poker magazine, he looks up every few seconds to laugh at the table conversation or insert a sly comment of his own into the mix. The other players seem grateful to be in his company, and he certainly gives us something interesting to watch here in the side room.
