Sam Simon Takes a Hit

Sam Simon raised to 1,800 and got a call from the player in the big blind. The flop came {9-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {7-Spades} and when his short stacked opponent moved all in Simon chose to call. His {8-Spades} {8-Diamonds} were up against his opponent's {J-Clubs} {7-Clubs}, but Simon closed off a few of his opponent's outs when the {8-Hearts} on the turn gave him a set. That card also gave his opponent an inside straight draw, but it was the {3-Clubs} on the river that gave him a flush and the pot. Simon saw his stack slip to 22,000.

Dangerous Flop for Gavin and Opponent

Gavin Smith
Gavin Smith
Preflop, a player from early position made it 2,300 to go when Gavin Smith bumped the bet up to 5,800. His opponent made the call and the flop fell {8-Clubs} {Q-Spades} {A-Diamonds} and both players checked. The turn brought the {7-Spades} and again both players checked it. The {9-Hearts} on the river led to one last check, with Smith turning over pocket kings while his opponent showed pocket jacks.

One of Those Days

Bill Edler just couldn't catch a break today. He took two tough hits right before dinner and a few minutes ago he suffered a fatal blow. After a player in early position raised to 1,625, Edler and two other players called. The flop came {4-Spades} {7-Spades} {6-Hearts} and it was checked around to the player on the cutoff, who bet 5,000. Edler then check-raised for his last 23,000 and his opponent thought a bit before making the call.

Edler's {6-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} had outflopped his opponent's {10-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} and it looked like he was about to more than double his stack. That's when the {10-Clubs} fell on the river, dealing Edler another brutal beat that brought his day to an end.

Players Continue to Drop

We're sitting at just about two hours and twenty minutes of play left in the evening and we're already down to 210 players remaining. The field started at 731, so that's 500 players in just seven hours of play.

We reach the money at 72, so how close will we come before calling it a night after the remaining two levels? Only time will tell...

Lots of Spades

On a board reading {6-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {7-Spades} {8-Spades} {4-Spades} John Murphy took down a large pot holding {K-Spades} {Q-Spades} against his opponents {J-Spades} {9-Spades}. Even though the board was four to the flush, neither player needed it after the turn.

After taking down the hand, Murphy's up to 72,000.

The Year of the Wahlroos

Thomas Wahlroos was all in with A-J against an opponent who held A-Q. The flop came A-J-X and Wahlroos stayed alive. After flopping two-pair, Wahlroos stood up and yelled "Yeah! It's the year of the Wahlroos!"

Soon after, Wahlroos was all in again holding A-K against his opponent's pocket nines. The board ran {Q-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} and again Wahlroos responded with an enthusiastic "Year of the Wahlroos" cheer. After scooping the pot, Wahlroos immediately apologized to the losing player, saying "Sorry for being so loud, I'd hate it if someone did that to me." His opponent replied that it was fine, but Wahlroos continued, "I was being an ass."

After two successful double-ups, Wahlroos is sitting with a comfortable 42,700.
