A Fortunate Turn

Robert McLaughlin was just the beneficiary of some tourney-saving good fortune. He'd gotten all of his chips in the middle on a flop of {J-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} while holding {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, only to run up against an opponent holding pocket treys. The {K-Hearts} popped out on the turn, though, and McLaughlin's hand held up. He now has 71,000.

Table Captain Kirk

In this battle-of-the-blinds hand, some preflop action had built up a modest-sized pot when the flop came {K-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. Ron Kirk -- who probably has about twenty years or more on most of his tablemates -- checked from the small blind, his opponent bet 5,000 from the big blind, then Kirk check-raised him to 22,000. The BB quickly folded.

"He was in every hand yesterday," said a player from across the table as the bespectacled Kirk wordlessly dragged the pot. "He doesn't play standard old guy poker."

Kirk is up to 96,000.

Paul Spitzberg Bluffs Off His Stack

On a board of {K-Spades} {6-Spades} {6-Hearts} {A-Hearts} Garrett Beckman checked and Paul Spitzberg moved all in for more than 70,000. Beckman casually said "I call" and turned over {6-Diamonds} {3-Spades} . Spitzberg flipped {Q-Clubs} {9-Clubs} and was drawing dead.

Beckman eliminates Spitzberg while moving up to 230,000.

Liu Out, 60 Remain

J.J. Liu was just eliminated. She was down to about 30,000 and pushed all in with {A-?} {9-?}, only to be called by a player with {A-?} {Q-?} behind her. She couldn't catch up, and ends the day in 61st, earning $7,432.

With Liu's elimination, that means we have just two women remaining of the 60 players left in the event -- Svetlana Gromenkova and Kristina Holst.

Gromenkova currently has about 72,000, while Holst has 87,000.
