Ivey Gathering Pace

Quietly, on a corner table, Phil Ivey has climbed up to 83k already today. Helping in his ascent was one late-position opponent who raised preflop in Omaha Hi-Lo, only to find Ivey three-betting from the small blind. This opponent called here, and then two subsequent bets Ivey made on the {Q-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} flop and {9-Spades} turn. When Ivey bet out again on the {7-Hearts} river, however, late position matey just gave up the hand and 5k.

Mortensen Motoring

2001 World Champion Carlos Mortensen is emerging as a force in today's event as he's has moved himself along nicely to now sit with 75,000 chips.

In a recent Stud-8 hand it was folded around to Mortensen who completed with the {8-Diamonds} however the player who brought in with the {3-Clubs} defended with a call.

Mortensen led fourth before being raised. He called and then called again on fifth, before taking control again on sixth and seventh streets.

The board were as follows:

Mortensen: ({5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}) {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Opponent: (X-X-X) {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{A-Spades}{8-Clubs}

Mortensen made an eight-high straight and seven-low to scoop the pot, much to the disgust of his opponent.

Turner and Rodman Get Flack

Layne Flack is busto after a very promising looking Stud 8-or-better hand turned into a dud three-way. Flack, whose stack consisted by this point of large towers of the smallest denomination chips, got action from both Blair Rodman and Jon Turner. In fact, when Flack bet sixth street, he got raised by Rodman - he was all in and Turner called both bets. Here's how their hands had shaped up:

Flack: [XX]{4-Hearts} {9-Spades} {A-Clubs} {5-Clubs}
Rodman: [XX]{4-Spades} {3-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {4-Diamonds}
Turner: [XX]{4-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {3-Diamonds}

The side pot stayed tiny as Rodman and Turner checked the river - Flack showed {10-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} {2-Hearts} which in the end amounted to just a pair of aces and no low. Rodman took the high showing {3-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} for two little pair which left Flack shaking his head as Turner showed {6-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} for the low.

Mercieradication

Mercier: Hmm.
Mercier: Hmm.
And that's the end of the line for the successful young player. You can't win them all, although Mercier's looked recently to be doing his best. A Stud hi-lo hand was his last. It started out fourway, but Mercier's bet on fourth street got rid of one opponent. He did, however get his all-in on firth called by both Scott Clements and Carol Kline.

Mercier: [XXX]{5-Spades} {3-Hearts} {8-Spades} ...{Q-Spades}
Clements: [XXX]{9-Clubs} {K-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} ...{Q-Clubs}
Kline: [XXX]{5-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} ...{8-Diamonds}

After they checked the river, Mercier said, "What you got?" lazily turning {A-Hearts} {3-Diamonds}. Clements showed {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {3-Spades} for trips, but it was Kline, somewhat confused about what her hand was, who scooped the lot and busted Mercier, showing {A-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} . She'd not looked delighted with her hand until the flush was pointed out, plus the seven low. "I didn't see that!" she said while raking in the pot.

Ivey Chops One

On a flop of {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{4-Hearts} the action was checked to Phil Ivey who fired a bet which was called by only the player in the big blind. They saw the {6-Hearts} hit the turn and the big blind then led with Ivey making the call.

The river was the {9-Clubs} and both players checked. The big blind tabled {2-?}{2-?}{5-?}{4-?} for a low as Ivey showed {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} for two pair for the high.

Some would say anytime you can chop with Phil Ivey it's as good as a win. He's up to 44,000 chips.

Toto Scoops In Omaha

Toto Leonidas
Toto Leonidas
Toto Leonidas is known for his aggressive no limit prowess, but he's doing well here in a limit game that requires a little more finesse.

On a the board reading {9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades} in a recent Omaha-8 hand, Leonidas called a bet on the turn before assessing his options on the river. He decided to check behind on the dangerous looking board, as his opponent tabled {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{7-Spades} for nothing but pairs as Leonidas was happy to scoop with his {A-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for a set of deuces.

Leonidas climbs to 35,000 chips.

Table of Death Breaks

Any table featuring Phil Ivey would probaly be considered a table of death, however when it also includes the likes of Chad Brown, Gavin Smith and Marsha Waggoner then it certainly deserves a special mention.

Thankfully for the other players who were hanging on for dear life at that table, it has now broken and the sharks have been spread amongst the remaining field.
