A Banner Day

When you're running good, you're running good. Steve Banner called a 35,000-chip all-in raise from a player in early position. It was a coin flip situation, with Banner's {9-Clubs} {9-Spades} against the all-in player's {A-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. The board flopped and turned monsters for the all-in player, {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {A-Spades}. But the river was the dreaded two-outer, the {9-Diamonds}. It gave Banner another pot as we approach the next break.

Nam Le Multitabling

The player in the cutoff seat raised to 12,000 first into the pot. The player on the button moved all in with a big stack, and action came to Nam Le in the big blind. He went into the tank for a minute or so before making the overcall, committing his final 68,200 chips to the pot. The original raiser ducked out to let the two live players duke it out.

Showdown
Button: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}
Nam Le: {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts}

The flop was favorable for Le, giving him another king. In the end, the board read {8-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {4-Clubs} {9-Hearts}. Le wins the race, doubling his way up to 144,000 or so.

It's quite an accomplishment for Le, who as we mentioned, is playing two Day 2's today. That ace-king double up bumped him back to a slightly above average stack here in Event #39. He's also still plugging along with 40,000 in Event #40.

More Frustration for Kang

Benjamin Kang looks to have doubled up since we last checked in on him, but he was just stymied again -- this time by Ray Davis.

Kang opened the pot for 10,500 from middle position. Action folded to Davis in the big blind, who quickly pushed a whole bunch of chips in the middle. The exact count was 54,000. Kang sighed, shooked his head, and pitched his cards to the dealer.

Cantu On a Roll

Look out, field. Brandon Cantu is coming.

We walked past his table just in time to spot him calling down Mark Newhouse in a preflop all in. Newhouse showed pocket eights, and Cantu had two queens. The board improved neither player, and Cantu eliminated Newhouse.

Just moments later, Cantu opened a pot from middle position, raising it up to 13,100. A few seats down, Mimi Tran moved all in for about 45,000, and Cantu called her down as well. She showed {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}, in bad shape against her opponent's {A-Spades} {K-Clubs}. The board was empty: {4-Hearts} {6-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {3-Spades}, and Cantu's ace-king high took it down.

In the span of just two or three minutes, Cantu has eliminated two very dangerous players, leapfrogging to the top spot on the leader board with 485,000.

Iversen Iced

On a flop of {A-Spades} {4-Spades} {3-Diamonds}, Albert Iversen got the rest of his short stack into the middle holding {5-?} {6-?}. He was called down by an opponent with no pair either, but the {J-Spades} {Q-Spades} was well ahead of Iversen.

The turn {10-Clubs} was a blank, and the {K-Spades} that hit fifth street sealed the deal for Iversen. After running his stack over 200,000 this morning, Iversen could not stop the skid this evening, and he now finds himself down to the felt.

Kang Rising

Benjamin Kang is making some progress despite his unfavorable table position. He and his opponent got all in before the flop in a recent hand, with Kang the one at risk of elimination. He turned over {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}, content to race for his tournament life against the {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts} of his opponent.

The board smiled on the altitudinous pro, coming {K-Spades} {K-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}. Improving to aces full, Kang notches a big double up to 83,000.

Clark Gets Sent Off

Zachary Clark opened with a raise, and after an opponent re-raised, he moved all in for about 55,000. His opponent called, tabling {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds} to put Clark's {7-Clubs} {7-Spades} in grave danger.

The board came {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {3-Spades}, changing nothing. Clark's three pair were no good, and he has been sent to the exit with just about 100 players left.

Von Halle Crippled, Eliminated

Jan Von Halle
Jan Von Halle
After a series of raises preflop, a player moved all in for 72,700, and Jan Von Halle looked him up with his slightly larger stack. Von Halle showed down {J-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}, but he was in awful shape, having run into {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}.

The board ran dry: {A-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {2-Spades} {4-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}. With fours full of queens, the unknown player doubled through Von Halle up over 150,000, leaving the pro with just 8,300 funny money.

Von Halle would make his exit just a couple hands later.
