A Pair Isn't Good, But it's Good Enough

Yueqi Zhu raised from the cutoff seat, and the player to his left gave him action.

Both players drew two cards, and Zhu made a bet. His opponent called and drew two again, while Zhu needed just one. He bet again and was called. Both men drew one card on the end, and it went check-check.

Zhu shook his head and tabled 3-3-7-4-2. To his surprise though, his opponent mucked his cards, unable to beat the pair of threes for a low. Zhu is up to 15,500.

PearlJammer is Number One

Jon "PearlJammer" Turner raised from the cutoff seat, and the button three-bet it. Fu Wong called from the small blind before Turner was able to four-bet raise. Both the button and Wong called the extra bet.

The button would stand pat the rest of the way, but Turner and Wong each needed one card. The action checked to the button, he bet, and both opponents called.

Turner and Wong would draw one again, and they'd let the button keep the betting lead. When he did bet, Wong called, Turner raised, the button folded, and Wong called again, heads up now.

Fu Wong picked one more card while Turner stood pat and tabled number one: 7-5-4-3-2. "Oh, I'm drawing dead," said Wong. He did peek at his card just to make sure, but it was useless. Turner took down that nice pot, moving up to 10,200.

Juanda Triples

A player in the cutoff raised to open the pot. The button reraised, and John Juanda four-bet it from the big blind, leaving himself just a single gray T100 chip. Both opponents called, and Juanda's last chip went into the pot as he drew one card. He'd draw one again on the second draw with his two opponents still betting and calling. On the final round, Juanda stood pat, and one of his opponents would finally fold to a bet.

The live player tabled an eighty-seven, but Juanda had caught his card, turning over the winning 7-6-4-3-2. His seventy-six is worth a triple up to 5,100.

Play Resumes

The cards are in the air once again. They'll stay that way for two more levels before we bag it up for the night just after 3:00am.

Irrational Numbers

Phil Hellmuth was one of the late registrants for this event, but he never showed up to play his stack. (We're pretty sure he's at the UltimateBet party tonight). After some discussion, the staff elected to void his entry and remove the chips from play. That decreases the field size by one, and it throws off all those beautiful numbers we typed up earlier.

With a field of 257 players now, the total prize pool is $591,100. That takes a little bit off of the payouts, with first place being worth $165,521. The full updated payout list can be found in the tab on the right.

Fricke Stands Pat

We pick up a heads-up pot between Jimmy Fricke and Fabrice Soulier after the first draw. Fricke was first in the small blind, and he bet. Soulier called from the button.

On the second draw, Fricke stood pat while Soulier asked for one card. After he peeked, the Frenchman would call another bet from gobboboy.

Fricke sat still again, and Soulier wanted one more try at pulling a good card. Both men checked on the end, and Fricke tabled the winning 9-6-5-3-2. He's up to 30,600 now.

Tired Eyes, Weary Dispositions

It's still an action game, but the pace of knockouts has slowed noticeably over the last level or so. The majority of the players are right near the average stack, with relatively few at the extreme top or bottom of the board. That's been a contributing factor to the tighten-up, but it may also just be that time of night.

Several of the players are getting heavy heads and eyelids, and the table chatter has thinned out as well. A few players are up from their chairs and wandering around the room, either to check on their pals or just to stay awake.

There's a lot of rubbing of the temples and ordering of coffee right now, and the once-swamped massage crew are longing for new customers as they stand lined up along the rail.
