The Final Number Is... 6,494

As we approach the dinner break, Tournament Director Jack Effel has made the announcement regarding the total number of entrants for the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event -- 6,494 players.

That means a prize pool of more than $61 million, with the top 648 places being paid. According to Effel, first prize nets a cool $8,548,435.

Ciresi Cut

Charlie Ciresi
Charlie Ciresi
Charlie Ciresi is one who won't be enjoying his dinner after being eliminated just prior to the break.

We're unsure of when the chips in the middle but Ciresi held {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} but had run into {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} on a board of {J-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades}.

Farmar Commits, Reaps Reward

A player in late position raised and both Jordan Farmar (small blind) and Robert Varkonyi (big blind) called, creating a pot of about 6,000. The flop came {7-Spades}{K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. Farmar and Varkonyi checked, the preflop raiser continued with a bet of 5,075, Farmar called, and Varkonyi got out of the way.

The turn was the {5-Hearts}. Farmar checked, his opponent made a hefty bet of 17,075, and Farmar said "I can't turn back now" as he made the call.

The river was the {4-Clubs}. Farmar again checked, and his opponent pushed all in for 27,000 -- just a couple thousand more than Farmar's stack. Farmar called relatively quickly, turning over {K-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for two pair. His opponent mucked.

Farmar picks up a lot of chips on that one, as well as some kudos from some of his tablemates for the river call. He catapults up to 95,000.

Torelli Terminated

Alec Torelli Eliminated
Alec Torelli Eliminated
Alec Torelli opened with a raise to 800 from early position and Soheil Shamseddin made the call in the small blind.

The flop landed {10-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Shamseddin checked to Torelli who fired 1,200. Shamseddin check-raised to 3,100 and Torelli made the call.

The turn brought the {9-Diamonds} and Shamseddin fired 7,000 into the middle. Torelli made the call. The river brought the {8-Spades} and Shamseddin checked to Torelli who moved all in for 23,950 in total.

Shamseddin went into the tank, and cut out his chips in deliberation of the decision. He would only have 3,400 left if he was wrong, but he made the call.

"Good call," said Torelli and revealed {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}, but Shamseddin collected the pot with {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for a straight to send Torelli to the rail.

Van Fleet Boosted

A rather dirty little boost for Jon van Fleet after he raised to 800 under the gun and got called by the gent to his left.

Van Fleet bet out 1,150 on the {8-Spades} {9-Clubs} {6-Hearts} flop and his opponent made it 3,625. Van Fleet called, and they saw a {9-Diamonds} turn. Van Fleet check-called 7,000 from Mr. Opponent, and then both players checked the {4-Diamonds} river, at which point it emerged that van Fleet's {9-Spades} {7-Spades} had cracked Mr. Opponent's {J-Spades} {J-Hearts}.

Gowen Doubles

Clonie Gowen has managed a double after flopping a straight, and getting all her chips in on the turn.

Gowen: {7-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Opponent: {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{10-Hearts} to see Gowen double through to over 29,000 in chips.

Small Dent To Chip Leader

Blair Hinkle
Blair Hinkle
Our chip leader Blair Hinkle has taken a hit after losing a preflop race.

Hinkle held {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} but couldn't improve against his opponent's {10-Clubs}{10-Spades} as the board ran out {3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{6-Spades}.

It was 23,625 to pay off his opponent, but Hinkle is still very strong with around 120,000.
