Jesus Rises Again, Briefly

Chris Ferguson got his last in with {a-Spades}{2-Spades} and found himself up against {5-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. The board ran out {2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{a-Clubs}, securing Ferguson a double up to the grand sum of, um, just 900 chips.

So it was that Ferguson was still extremely short when he got his chips in again, this time with {a-}{q-}, and soon discovered that he was in some serious trouble from the start. His opponent was holding the dominating {a-Spades}{k-Spades} which made a flush to boot, and Ferguson was duly eliminated from the tournament.

A Wise Move

Poker players are highly self-conscious when it comes to massages, and despite the lack of a face-to-face encounter and the possibility that big hands equates to a good, firm grip, still consider a massage from a male to be a definite no-no.

Chad Brown, however, has no such qualms and duly requested a manssage when the masseur crossed his path. But, on second glance, I couldn't help but notice that located on the seat behind him was wife Vanessa Rousso, perhaps hinting that this was more a strategic decision than anything else. A wise move indeed.

Either way, the manssage appears to be working, as Brown has increased his stack to almost thrice his starting stack with an impressive 12,500. As for Rousso, she's not doing too bad herself, her stack climbing gradually since an explosive start and now up to the 13,500 mark.

Things To Do in the Amazon Room

Tournament poker can be a long slog, even for those accustomed to spending all day and night just playing cards.

What are some of these folks doing to amuse themselves?

Andy Bloch - playing Scrabble on his ipad.

Brock Parker - playing some sort of curious game on his phone.

David Williams - watching a movie on his phone, although we can't work out which one - "I didn't see any shooting," was all that our man on the floor could tell us.

Negreanu Learns Something New Every Day

Daniel Negreanu limped in on the button, only for the big blind to announce, "I'll make it two bets," and then raise.

"I've been playing poker a long time and I've never heard that," said Negreanu. "I'm gonna start using that."

He folded.

Next hand, Negreanu raised from the cutoff and both blinds called to see a {10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop. The action checked around to Negreanu, who announced, "One bet," to some chuckling around the table. The small blind folded, but the big blind raised. Negreanu called, and they went heads up to the turn.

The check-raiser bet out on both the {4-Clubs} turn and {4-Diamonds} river; Negreanu called both times and it went to showdown - but the big blind turned over {q-Spades}{10-Spades} and Negreanu mucked.

Negreanu's down to 3,100.

Bloch Rocked

Thanks to Svetlana Gromenkova, Andy Bloch was left with little more than a bowl of rice when his exit hand arrived. Facing a bet on an {8-Spades}{J-Spades}{J-Clubs} flop, Bloch was so short (125 to be precise) that his opponent kindly revealed his hand, {K-Spades}{Q-Clubs}. Seeing his cards were live, Bloch indeed called with {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}, but was unable to improve on an ineffective {A-Hearts} turn and {10-Spades} river.

Lisandro Whacked

Jeff Lisandro
Jeff Lisandro

We arrived just in time to see Jeff Lisandro toss in the last of his chips on the turn of an {a-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts} board and turn over {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. His opponent tabled {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}, and following the blank {2-Spades} on the river, Lisandro headed for the door.

Four Horsemen

Post-lunch has seen a sudden emergence of known players, either having previously slipped unseen into a nook or cranny, or making a late appearance after busting from the stud event.

One player who has recently been spotted is Daniel Negreanu. When I joined his table he was entwined in a pot with Dutchman and former bracelet winner Rob Hollink. The board read {8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, and Negreanu had just called a raise to 800 from Hollink.

The river came a {6-Diamonds}, and Negreanu called a bet of 400, allowing Hollink to confidently reveal {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

"No good," said Negreanu without tabling his hand.

"No?" replied Hollink, wondering if he was being slow-rolled by a superior hand?

But in the end, it was a draw, Negreanu causing a chuckle by revealing the same hand, {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} for a chopped pot.

As a result, both players remain on roughly the same count, Negreanu with 5,800, but Hollink going great guns with 9,000.
