Peanuts for Shultz

Well, he's actually got less than peanuts, as 2008 Champion Jimmy Shultz is now out. I didn't catch the hand myself, but as he left, a rather dejected expression on his face, he muttered something about "ace-king losing to a rivered flush".

Strothmann Loses to Aces, Doesn't Mind

We found European circuit fixture Malte Strothmann calling a bet from another player on an {8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} flop, and then another on the {4-Spades} turn. The same thing happened on the {k-Diamonds} river, and the bettor revealed {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} for a set of aces.

"Now I look smart, right?" said Strothmann's opponent in what was clearly intended to be a pointed manner. Strothmann didn't seem too bothered, though - he giggled and mucked, and was left with 4,800.

They Just Keep On Coming

Although registration has been closed for some time, one Phillip Jerome Hellmuth Jr. has just taken his seat across in what we are now referring to as the VIP section - the orange section across the way where all the late registrations were seated. He's sharing a table with Victor Ramdin and Barbara Enright, among others.

Just now we witnessed him raising to 300, only for another player to stick in 400 - more than a call, abut not enough for a raise.

"Are you trying to raise or call?" Hellmuth enquired. His opponent merely shrugged, although it was clearly intended to be, and ultimately deemed, a raise.

"Are you playing games with me?" Hellmuth continued. "Do you know what, I'm going to fold this to one bet so it gets out on the internet, helps my image."

Happy to oblige, Mr. Hellmuth. He showed {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}.

Noah Broke-en

Poker players either hit the deck, or are hit by the deck. Unfortunately for Noah Boeken, it was the former as he was ultimately unable to recover from his previous encounters, his final chips going in with {A-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} on a {J-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop.

There were two other players in the hand, one of whom was Barry Greenstein, but it was the unknown player who picked up both the pot and the scalp, {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} beating Greenstein's {K-}{Q-} after the {3-Spades} turn and {5-Hearts} river were both checked down.

Alas, Boeken is Noah more.

Noah Good for Boeken

Barry Greenstein raised it up preflop only for Noah Boeken to repop. Lauren Kling and Greenstein both made the call. On the {J-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop, Boeken bet, and although Kling stepped out the way, Greenstein made the call. Boeken bet one more time on the {K-Clubs} turn, but as Barry resisted, Boeken conceded the {Q-Spades}, check-folding to a single bet to allow the Robin Hood of Poker to pick up the pot.

As a result, Boeken is down to just 450.

Stayin' Alive

Preflop, we saw more action than a Die Hard boxset, and then on the {10-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop it was as if Steven Segal had entered the room with a machine gun as three players once again capped the betting.

One of those players was Sorel Mizzi, and with just 175 remaining on the {J-Diamonds} turn, he was forced to sit back as his opponents meekly checked down the {9-Diamonds} river, if not with a sense of disgruntlement.

And they were right to be dissatisfied as Mizzi had got there with {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} for the rivered straight, only to find that he had pipped not only {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}, but also {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} to stay alive in the tournament. Somehow, he now has 3,600, but may have used up that 'one time'.

One In, One Out

After an inevitably slow start, this level appears to be one that can actually send people to their demise. I couldn't help but notice that former EPT finalist Cristiano Blanco, for one, was missing, presumed lost.

Meanwhile, as a smattering of players make their early exit towards the door, latecomer Phil Ivey has finally taken his seat and wasted no time in getting involved. A brief watch of his table unveiled that he has won four of the last five pots, thus increasing his slightly diminished stack back up to over the starting stack.

I wish I was good enough to arrive after everyone. It would be like Michael Johnson turning up as his opponents were already half way around the track, and then still winning!
