More Excitement Awaits As Ladies Return

La Sengphet, chip leader entering Day 2
La Sengphet, chip leader entering Day 2

It was an exciting -- and controversial -- day at the Rio yesterday as the $1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold'em event kicked off. A large field of 1,054 came to play (including a few ruckus-causing men), and of that field just 136 made it to day's end with chips.

La Sengphet has raced out to a huge chip lead after one day of play, with her 148,500 more than twice her nearest competitor when they bagged up chips last night.

But in second lurks Svetlana Gromenkova, winner of this same event in 2008. And a host of other tough competitors are still with above-average stacks, too, among them WSOP bracelet-holder Linda Johnson, recent EPT San Remo winner Liv Boeree, and Evelyn Ng.

We're not far from the cash bubble bursting in this one. And that's when the excitement really begins, as the payouts begin and we make our way closer to a final table.

Coverage begins 2:30 p.m. Vegas time. See you back here then.

Cards in the Air

Day 2 at the WSOP
Day 2 at the WSOP

Most of the players are seated and have unbagged their chips, and the first hands of Day 2 are being dealt. The top 117 spots pay, so just 19 more eliminations and we're in the money!

"Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!"

We have a celebrity returning to join our field today -- the actress Jennifer Cox, whose credits include a role as Jan Brady in The Brady Bunch movies. (A quick check reveals no Marcias at her table today.)

Cox had an eventful day yesterday that included winning a big hand versus Kathy Liebert that claimed most of Liebert's stack just before the WSOP bracelet holder was eliminated.

Cox returns to a below average stack of 14,400 today which relative to the rest of the field puts her in that big group in the middle.

In the middle. Just like Jan Brady.

Jett Shoots Down Westerman

Karina Jett opened by pushing her stack of about 4,000 in the middle, and Kara Westerman -- covered by a tad by Jett -- made the call.

Jett tabled {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}, while Westerman showed {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. The flop came {4-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, pairing Jett and leaving Westerman searching for a saving seven. None came, however, as the turn was the {J-Spades} and the river the {10-Spades}.

"I had to go for it, I'm sorry," said Jett to Westerman as she rose to leave. Jett is now at 8,100.

Haas Bets Out Boeree

Liv Boeree raised to 2,200 from the button, and it folded around to Joanne Haas who called from the big blind.

The flop came {K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, and Haas checked. Boeree continued for 1,700, and Haas checked-raised all in for 13,100 total. Boeree stepped aside.

Boeree sits with 54,000, while Haas is at 23,000.

Adventures on the Bubble

Jennifer Cox -- the actress mentioned a short while ago who portrayed Jan Brady in The Brady Bunch films -- was just involved in an exciting hand here on the cash bubble.

Cox pushed her remaining 9,000 or so all in before the flop, sending Cari Jewett into the tank. Finally Jewett folded {A-}{K-} face up, and Cox tabled her hand -- {A-}{A-}.

Cox hangs on with 10,500, while Jewett has 21,000.
