Lindgren Not a Phan of Being Outdrawn

Erick Lindgren
Erick Lindgren

Erick Lindgren limped in, only to face a push for around 1,000 from Tim Phan. The gentleman in the small blind thought about it for some time but ultimately folded; Lindgren however stuck his whole stack in the middle with a flourish, and then turned over {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}.

Phan turned over one card - the {a-Clubs} - and then stopped. "That's a key card," Lindgren told him, and after a short pause Phan turned over the other card. It was the {k-Spades}, meaning that Phan was drawing pretty thin.

Board: {7-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{a-Spades}

"Keep 'em coming," said Lindgren as Phan doubled to 2,200. "I wonder how you beat me online."

Lindgren was left with a precarious 1,200.

They Do Serve Decaf, If You Ask For It

We've made it clear several times how big the Pavilion room is. Kind of hard for one person to get the attention of the hundreds and hundreds sitting in here at the moment. Without a microphone, anyhow.

However, one excitable player recently managed to do just that. He'd been warned just a short while ago about using profanity, actually. But that couldn't stop him from jumping up and roaming his section just now after winning a sizable pot, loudly shouting "OOOOH... SHIP IT MOTHERF*&$^%!"

Mr. Expressive has been invited to take an orbit off to think about how best to manage his celebrations should future hands end in positive outcomes.

Savin' the Maven

David Chicotsky
David Chicotsky

There was a limp in early position before David "The Maven" Chicotsky moved in for 1,050 in mid position. Everyone else folded, the limper called, and they were on their proverbial backs.

Chicotsky: {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Mr. Limper: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Board: a spike-free {4-Spades}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Chicotsky duly doubled to 2,300, and stays in the game for the moment at least.

4,345 Total Entrants

Level 4 has begun, and registration has been closed for an hour, meaning we can safely report the total entrants for this first of six $1,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em events in this summer's Series has come to 4,345. That would mean (if our math is correct) that we had 1,744 come out today for Day 1b, joining the 2,601 from yesterday.

Right now the board is showing a rounded-off-looking-number of 1,200 of our Day 1b entrants are still remaining.

Incidentally, one of those 1,200 -- just arrived near the end of Level 3 -- is 11-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, frequent conqueror of these low buy-in NLHE events. We'd heard something about a lime-green colored experiment in fashion for the Poker Brat recently, but today he's returned to his more familiar "man in black" look.

Short-Stacked Odyssey Turns into Short Story for Lindgren

No sooner than we had reported him doubling up than Erick Lindgren succumbed.

Back down to 750, he open-shoved with {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts} and was called by the gentleman in the cutoff holding {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. The cutoff improved to a flush on the {4-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Clubs} board, and Lindgren signed an autograph for him before telling tablemate Tim Phan, "Gotta go," and heading in the general direction of away.

No Candy for Pezzin

Pat Pezzin
Pat Pezzin

Team PokerStars Pro Pat Pezzin has come close to a WSOP bracelet before, making three final tables including a runner-up finish in the 2009 WSOP Limit Hold'em Championship event ($10,000 buy-in). He's also had a fine month of May, having several cashes and deep finishes in the recently completed PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker.

No such good fortune for Pezzin today, however. Indeed, on his last hand of the afternoon it couldn't get much worse.

Pezzin opened for 550 in early position and must have been delighted when another player reraised to 1,450. Pezzin made it all in for 3,700, his opponent snap-called, and they flipped the cards.

Reraiser/Snap-Caller: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Pezzin: had every right to feel confident with {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}

Board: {7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}

Quad tens was not what Pezzin wanted to see, and he departed the tournament without delay.
