We're Done, But This Horse Race Is Far From Over

Another day in the office for the great Phil Ivey
Another day in the office for the great Phil Ivey

That's a wrap from Day 1 of Event #37: $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. We started the day with 478 players and after eight levels of play we reduced the field to approximately 219.

Early on the play was pretty slow, which is to be expected in the limit format, and we have a long road ahead to reach the final table tomorrow.

It was a stellar lineup with all the big names on show for this event, with the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, Chad Brown, Marcel Luske, David Benyamine, Justin Smith, Chau Giang, Erik Seidel, Greg Mueller, Doyle Brunson, John Juanda, Pat Pezzin, Mike Matusow, Phil Hellmuth and defending champ Zac Fellows all surviving the day.

There was never a breakaway leader today, however Mark Johns, Phillip Wallace, Jordan Siegal and Darus Suharto appear to be bagging up the lion's share with close to 60,000. Of course we'll have the exact chip counts for the field later this evening.

At last count we had approximately 219 survivors who will come back tomorrow to the Amazon Room at 3pm to continue this horse race. We look forward to your company then!

Max Takes Late Pot

Hold'em

Max Pescatori has chipped up late in the day during a hand of Hold'em. Pescatori raised preflop and then fired bets on every street on the {3-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{J-Spades} board, with his opponent check-calling in the big blind.

Pescatori showed down {Q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for a pair of tens which was good to collect the pot.

Ivey Always Has A Big Hand; Hachem Eliminated

Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

Razz

Joe Hachem completed with the {4-Hearts} with two players, including Phil Ivey, making the call. On fourth, the unknown player led the betting and Hachem raised all in. Ivey and the third player made the call.

Another bet came on fifth and Ivey announced a raise as the two live players built a side pot. Ivey again bet on sixth before they checked down seventh.

Hachem: (X-X-X) / {4-}{9-}{K-}{2-}
Ivey: ({A-}{8-}{3-}) / {9-}{6-}{4-}{3-}
Opponent: ({A-}{2-}{J-}) / {A-}{4-}{9-}{3-}

Ivey showed an eighty-six which was good as his opponent bricked and Hachem mucked.

"I thought you had a big hand?" the unknown player said to Ivey.

"I know you thought I had a big hand," was the poetic reply from Ivey.

Meanwhile Hachem departed as Ivey now sits with 29,000 chips.

Harman Hits The Rail

Jennifer Harman
Jennifer Harman

Stud-8

Jennifer Harman's tournament has come to an end in a Stud-8 hand against Al Barbieri. When we arrived at the table, the cards were on their backs with the boards running out as follows:

Harman: ({2-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts}) / {6-Clubs}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Barbieri: ({A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}) / {7-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Harman could only muster a pair of sixes as Barbieri made eights for the high to go with his eight low to scoop and send Harman to the rail. "Sugarbear" is now up to 30,000 chips.

Some Razzle From Brown

Chad Brown

Razz

Team PokerStars Pro Chad Brown is now up to 32,000 after taking down a recent Razz hand. Brown raised on third, fired bets on fourth and fifth, before calling the bet of his opponent on sixth. On the river, Brown fired out with a bet and his opponent called.

Brown: ({A-}{2-}{5-}) / {7-}{6-}{7-}{K-}
Opponent: ({A-}{7-}{4-}) / {8-}{6-}{6-}{4-}

Brown made a seventy-six which was good to take it down.
