Scotty Plays Blind

Stud

Scotty Nguyen: {A-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{8-Spades} / {A-Spades}{8-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Robert Williamson III: (XXX) / {10-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Hearts}

In Stud, Scotty Nguyen raised third street without looking at his two down cards and was called by Robert Williamson III. Williamson then bet fourth street and Nguyen called without looking. Both players checked fifth and then Nguyen bet sixth, still without looking at his hole cards.

Williamson called to seventh and, once again, Nguyen bet blind. This time Williamson folded, prompting Nguyen to finally look. He had in fact made two pair. Nguyen is up to 32,000 while Williamson drops to 28,500.

The Tides Are Changing?

Jack Binon and Phil Ivey.
Jack Binon and Phil Ivey.

The man who is once again the talk of the town, the great Phil Ivey, is back in action here this afternoon as he goes for bracelet number nine!

This afternoon the Pavillion Room was packed as media, friends and fans crammed close to the stage to catch a glimpse of Ivey as he was awarded his eighth bracelet in a presentation ceremony for his win in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E event a few nights ago.

While Ivey is a warm favorite in any field, apparently Annie Duke feels that the wheels might have turned as she rushed to a nearby table to tell friends of the beat she just placed on the great man.

"Oh my god! I just hit a one-outer on Phil Ivey!" yelled an excited Duke. "I had three queens in Omaha, and he had three aces, and I made quads!"

Maybe it's a solar eclipse today or something, but we didn't think it was possible for anyone to hit one-outers on Phil Ivey.

What A Field!

We'd normally write a "who's here" post right about now, but it might be easier to write a "who's not here" post instead. The cream of the crop have turned out for this event, with every table full of talent, skill, patches and bracelets.

Rather than name names, simply refer to to our Chip Counts page for a full list of our notables in the field.

Team PokerStars in the Field

Players are still taking their seats but already a number of Team PokerStars Pros can be seen at various tables. Among those representing are Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer, Alex Kravchenko, Jason Mercier, Chad Brown and Bill Chen, with the latter two having just found success in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament just a few days ago.

We're Underway!

The players have taken their seats in the top of the blue section of the Amazon Room and as we look around the room it's clearly going to be a star-studded affair. At first guestimate there are around 25 tables setup, although many of them are kicking off short-handed.

Day 1 of H.O.R.S.E. Championship Set to Begin

Last year the most expensive H.O.R.S.E. tournament was the $50,000 Players Championship, which was won by David Bach. In 2010, tournament officials made the decision to change the format of the Players Championship to an 8-game mix; as a result, the WSOP added a new $10,000 buy-in event for H.O.R.S.E. aficionados.

The more modest buy-in will likely attract a bigger field, but is still large enough to limit the amount of amateurs while attracting most of the big names in poker. Doyle Brunson, Robert Williamson III, Allen Kessler and Todd Brunson are just a few of the pros who've Tweeted that they'll be playing today.

With so many professionals in the field, it seems inevitable that the final table will be one for the ages. In fact, just a few days ago the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event finished with a stacked final table including Chad Brown, John Juanda, Jeff Lisandro, Bill Chen and Phil Ivey, who took down the tournament and won his eighth bracelet in the process. H.O.R.S.E. is clearly a game that allows the best to rise to the top, and the $10,000 Championship event will be no different.

Who will pony up the $10,000 buy-in? Who will make it through Day 1? Who will become the first $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Champion? Join us at 5 pm local time as PokerNews brings you the all the latest action from Day 1.
