No POY Points for Schemelev; He Bubbles

A stream of Russian came flying out of Vladimir Schemelev's mouth as he exited the tournament on the precise money bubble. He check-raised all in on the turn of a {5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades} board for about 30,000. Jeremy Harkin, no tall stack himself, called with a flopped full house, {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}. That was bad news for Schemelev, who tabled {5-Hearts}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for trip fives. He did, however, have the only low draw. Any ace, deuce, six or seven would save half of the pot for Schemelev, and of course the case five was a scoop. Instead the river came {9-Diamonds}, giving Schemelev an under-full, not big enough to overtake Harkin. He's out, but not without letting fly an angry flurry of Russian.

The rest of the players are in the money. The field is undergoing the three-table re-draw right now. They'll play out the last twenty minutes of the level and then bag up for the night.

River Me Runs Shallow

Sergey Altbregin opened to 22,000 and then called the push from Felix "River Me" Gubitz.

Altbregin: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Gubitz: {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Board: {7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs}

It was a chop, but Gubitz didn't know this because he had run out of the room as soon as he'd tabled his cards. His chips sat there on their own for a bit before he returned to see how it had gone.

"Oh, it's a split," he said. "OK."

Tension Mounts

For some, this is rather tenser than for others.

Take Mr. Vladimir Schemelev. He is right now our official short stack on just 30,000. If he manages to make it into the money, he will be equal with John Juanda and Frank Kassela for Player Of the Year. If he bubbles, he will not.

Good luck, Mr. Schemelev!

Oh No, Tahkokallio Busto

Ilari Tahkokallio is owed some good karma, really, after the great sportsmanship he showed at EPT Berlin during a robbery. But he didn't get the good karma paid back today. Tahkokallio was all in, two spots off the money. He ran smack dab into Sergey Altbregin's aces, {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. Tahkokallio's hand (which we admit in the rush of the all-in, we weren't able to copy down before it was killed, apart from seeing a {10-Diamonds} and an {8-Hearts}) couldn't beat aces on a board of {j-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. Tahkokallio is therefore busto, and the tournament is now playing hand-for-hand on the money bubble. Forty minutes remain in the level.

Six Nixed

We arrived to find Michael Six all in preflop, with a side pot forming between Andy Black and Felix "River Me" Gubitz.

"You don't want to write this down," Six told us. "Please don't write this down."

Black and Gubitz saw a {4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop.

"Um, I check," said Gubitz, giggling.

"I'm all in," said Black - this was actually corrected to a 119,000 pot-sized bet - either way, easily enough to cover Gubitz and his remaining 40,000 or so.

After a while Gubitz folded and the other two were on their backs. As it happened, Six got his wish - we only managed to catch three of his down cards before the dealer mucked them and Six took his leave.

Black: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{j-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Six: {j-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}(X)

Turn: {10-Hearts}

River: {7-Hearts}

"I thought you were giving me protection with my junk hand," laughed Six as he headed for the door, almost on the bubble. Black moved up to 300,000.

Short Stacks Refuse to Die

There was a three-way all in on Table 330, yet somehow not a single player was eliminated. The chips were all in on a flop of {6-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs}. Jeremy Harkin (53,000) showed down {j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for the nut straight; Cam McKinley (66,000) showing down the second-nut low, {a-Spades}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{6-Hearts}; and Dan Heimiller (covering both opponents) showing down {7-Hearts}{9-Spades}[d]{a-Hearts} for the nut straight. Nothing changed with the {3-Diamonds} turn or {8-Hearts} river. Heimiller and McKinley split a small side pot. For the main pot, McKinley got half and Heimiller and Harkin got one-quarter each.
