Event #57: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Championship

Day 2b Started

Day 2, Again

The doors of the Amazon Room opened moments ago. The survivors of Days 1b and 1d are now making their way to their tables (and presumably the same thing is going on in the Pavilion Room) to try to play their way down into the single combined field that will come back on Monday for Day 3.

There's not much we can say at this point that hasn't already been said. We expect things to start off with a bang and lots of rapid eliminations. But we're still a long, long way from the money bubble. That will presumably come late Monday.

The plan is to play four levels today: half of Level 5, Levels 6 and 7, and half of Level 8. We're going to begin on time in about ten minutes, hich means we'll be done by around 10:30pm.

Keep your browser pointed at PokerNews for continual live updates from the floor throughout the day.

Coscia Starts With a Double-Up

Lino Coscia started the day with 21,375 chips. Not even five minutes into the day, he got his whole stack into the middle on a flop of {9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Coscia was called by an opponent with top pair, {k-Spades}[{9-Hearts}, which was in bad shape against Coscia's set of deuces, {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}. Nothing changed on the turn {a-Diamonds} or river {4-Spades}. Like that, Coscia is up to about 44,000.

Thuy Doan Eliminated Early

Thuy Doan started the day with only 5,000 chips, so you can't blame her for looking to start the day with an early double-up. On one of the first hands of the day she found herself all in with one caller.

Doan: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Opponent: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Doan needed a lot of help to pull ahead, but was unable to as the board ran out {9-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}.

Turner Sees Some Early Action

Jon Turner was acting under the gun and raised to 950, getting a call from the player in the hijack as well as the player in the big blind.

The flop came {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and all three players checked through to the turn, which came {q-Spades}. The big blind checked to Turner who bet 1,600 and both of his opponents folded.

Ending the Main Event to a 1-Outer

Everyone's Main Event has to end somehow. A very unlucky few will go home with the mother of all bad beats, like the player who faced Douglas Gabriel in a recent hand. That player got his last 30,000 chips in on the turn of a {5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{5-Spades} board with {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, a full house. Gabriel had that was just a little better -- {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for quad fives. He had turned a miraculous one-outer to take the lead. Gabriel's opponent was unable to repeat the feat and as a result he's out. Gabriel has about 88,000.

Hamby Chips Up

Jared Hamby is up to about 70,000 after notching an early elimination. The player in the cutoff made a minimum raise and Hamby, sitting with the button, re-raised to 2,800. When it folded back around to the cutoff, that player moved all in for about 15,000 total. Hamby called with {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and was up against {k-Spades}{10-Spades}. Hamby paired his ace on the flop and never looked back.

Lose Some, Win Some for Moon

Back-to-back hands for 2009 November Niner Darvin Moon resulted in one pot being pushed away from him and one pot being pushed towards him. First, Moon called an early-position raise to 1,125 from the big blind. He checke-raised a {5-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{9-Spades} flop from 2,100 to 5,000. His opponent called. Both players checked the {3-Clubs} turn and {6-Diamonds} river.

"I got the nine," said Moon. No good. His opponent showed down two kings, {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}, to take the pot.

The very next hand, Moon and the same player tangled from the blinds. They were part of a a limped flop of {6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Moon's opponent bet 1,200, with only Moon making the call from the small blind. Both players checked the turn when it fell {a-Hearts}. Another ace, {a-Spades}, hit the river and drew a bet of 2,200 from Moon. His opponent called with pocket sevens, which were in second place to Moon's trips, {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}.
