Costner Departs

Gabe Costner
Gabe Costner

Gabe Costner looked for a moment like he might be pushing toward the chip lead and control of this Main Event with about 50 or so players left. A few untimely cards and lost pots later, and he was down to 1.175 million chips when he moved all in with {10-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}. Scott Clements looked him up with {A-Diamonds} {9-Hearts}, and Costner was looking good to double.

There was an ace on the flop, though, and the board of {A-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {4-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} was just all around unkind to Costner. It's his fourth cash this year at the WSOP, and this latest score moves him up over $1,000,000 in career earnings. His first bracelet will have to wait for now though; Costner is out in 35th place.

Clements is now on 6 million, give or take. He's still stacking.

Candio Bluffs With Top Pair

Patrick Eskandar raised it up under the gun to 260,000 with Brandon Steven calling in the small blind and Filippo Candio coming along in the big blind.

The flop landed {6-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Spades} and play checked through to see the {4-Hearts} hit the turn. Steven checked and Candio bet out 315,000. Eskandar then put in a raise to 940,000 with Steven folding and Candio making the call.

The river was the {2-Spades} and Candio suddenly moved all in! He covered Eskandar who had about 1.9 million behind, but he decided to keep those for another spot as he flashed the {4-Diamonds} and folded! Candio decided to repay the favor as he revealed {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}! Candio is up to 11.5 million.

Baker Five-Bet Success

Matt Affleck opened to 250,000 from under the gun only to have David Baker three-bet from the cutoff to 875,000.

With the action on William Thorson on the button, he four-bet to 2,200,000 total to prompt a fold from Affleck.

Baker then moved all in for 4,115,000 to put Thorson deep into the tank.

After roughly three minutes of contemplating, Thorson tossed his cards into the muck to see Baker climb to 6,805,000 as Thorson slips to 6,500,000 in chips.

Why Wywrot? Why?

Michal Wywrot open-jammed for all of his 1.84 million stack from the cutoff but Michiel Sijpkens woke up with a hand in the big blind as he made the call.

Wywrot: {A-Spades}{3-Clubs}
Sijpkens: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Sijpkens had the dominating hand and it remained that way as the board bricked out {J-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{8-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. Wywrot is out, finishing in 36th place. Sijpkens stacks up 8.2 million chips.

Palovic Eliminated, 36 Remain

Dag Palovic
Dag Palovic

Dag Palovic shoved from early position, and John Dolan reshoved behind for 1.75 million total. That was enough to get everyone else out. Cards on their backs...

Palovic {A-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Dolan {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

The board ran out {j-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, and Palovic hits the rail in 37th place. The Slovakian earns $206,395 for his finish.

Dolan now has 2.425 million.

Doubling Direnzo

We haven't talked much about Gianni Direnzo today, but we found him opening a pot to 350,000 from early position. Dag Palovic moved all in for 2.4 million behind him, and Direnzo considered for about twenty or thirty seconds before calling all in for his own last 1.255 million. Cards on their backs, gents:

Direnzo: {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}
Palovic: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades}

Another big-pair-versus-big-pair clash here deep in the Main Event. It was a bad spot for Palovic obviously, and the {6-Hearts} {K-Spades} {7-Hearts} flop pretty much ended things right there. The turn and river came {7-Spades} and {7-Clubs}, and Direnzo hit the jackpot. He's up to 2.75 million now, while Palovic has slipped to 1.145 million.

Statz Adds to Stack

We picked up this button-versus-blind battle after a {Q-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop.

Bryn Kenney led for 640,000 from the big blind, and Benjamin Statz called from the button. The turn was the {8-Clubs}, putting a third club on board. This time Kenney pushed out a bet of 1.06 million, and Statz responded by reraising all in, at which point Kenney stepped aside.

Statz has had a good first half of Level 29, and now sits with about 11.1 million chips. Kenney now has 3.32 million.

Habib Chips Up

Hasan Habib opened to 230,000 and Duy Le defended his big blind.

The {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop was checked through to see the {8-Diamonds} land on the turn and Le led out for 230,000. Habib made the call as the {4-Diamonds} landed on the river and Le checked the action to Habib.

Taking over forty seconds to contemplate his decision, Habib moved all in for his last 660,000 to force a fold from Le as Habib collected the pot to move to 1,650,000 in chips.
