Clemencon Crushes Competition With Queen on River

Level 16

Hold'em:

We caught the action just before the start of the last level, as Tristan Clemencon had capped the betting before the flop from middle position, five-betting his opponents and making it a whopping 12,500 to go. The big blind and two other players made the call, putting 50,000 in the middle before a flop was even dealt.

Flop: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

After all the action before the flop, the dealer delivered an action board and the players responded. Clemencon checked and Opponent # 1 fired 2,500 into the middle, a bet that looked puny compared to the mountain of chips at stake. The big blind folded and Opponent # 2 came along, as did Clemencon, and the turn card came {8-Hearts}.

Clemencon again checked it and Opponent # 1 took the lead once more, betting 5,000 chips. Opponent # 2 declined to bite and mucked his hand, leaving Opponent # 1 and Clemencon as the last men standing in the fight to claim this massive prize.

River: {Q-Clubs}

Clemencon silently tapped the table and Opponent # 1 fired his last 5,000 barrel. Now it was time for Clemencon to spring his trap and he check-raised to 10,000, prompting his opponent to shake his head in disgust, saying "Ace-queen is fu****ing good" as he made the call.

Clemencon indeed flipped up his {A-Spades}{Q-Spades} and the dejected Opponent # 1 tossed his {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} face up into the muck, absolutely crushed that he had lost this pot, which has to be the biggest of the tournament so far, to a three-outer on the river. The quiet Frenchman silently dragged the pile of chips, which totaled 87,500, in his direction and instantly became a force to be reckoned with.

Flack Fired Up, Tops 100K

Level 15
Layne Flack flashing his trademark grin during Day 2
Layne Flack flashing his trademark grin during Day 2

We missed the carnage but after dropping an early pot in the Hold'em round to leave him a bit short stacked, Layne "Back to Back" Flack has lived up to his moniker by winning consecutive massive pots, vaulting over the 100,000 chip threshold.

When asked for details Flack happily responded "Ya know... just stellar play. Just got it in good... you don't always have to suckout, sometimes you just get in good and go from there." Pressed for an actual hand, Flack reeled off a tale involving a "wrap nut low, nut flush that got there" during the Omaha-8 round.

An opponent sitting across from him was not as amused and Flack asked him, "I had the best hand every time, didn't I?" The other player sat stone faced and replied simply "No, no you did not." We will be sure to keep a better eye on Flack throughout the remainder of Day 2 to see if he can continue climbing up the leaderboard.

Pezzin Backdoors Mencher

Level 15

Hold'em:

Action folded to Team PokerStars Pro Canada's Pat Pezzin in the cutoff seat and he raised. The big blind, Jason Mencher, three-bet and Pezzin called with position to his advantage to see the flop come down {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades}. After the flop, Mencher bet and Pezzin called.

Fourth street was the {2-Spades} and Mencher stuck out another bet. Pezzin wasn't going anywhere just yet and made the call to see the river.

The {J-Spades} fell on fifth street and Mencher fired a bet. Pezzin put in a raise and his opponent made the call. Pezzin then showed the {K-Spades}{5-Spades} for a spade flush after having only flopped one spade and backing into it on the turn and river. Mencher showed pocket aces, but they were no good.

Pezzin climbed to 55,000 in chips.
