When a Tie Feels Like a Loss

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 0 ante

In the next-to-last hand of Level 21, Igor Sharaskin opened with a raise to 38,000 from middle position, then Thomas Scarber reraised the pot -- 138,000 -- behind him. It folded back around, and Sharaskin called.

The flop came {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. Sharaskin announced he was betting the pot, and Scarber quickly called with his remaining chips.

Sharaskin showed {A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Scarber {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. The turn brought the case ace -- the {A-Clubs} -- giving Scarber a set. The river was the {4-Hearts}, and Scarber initially clapped his hands. "Oh damn," he said immediately after. "Makes him the low."

Indeed, that river gave Sharaskin the low half of the pot and they chopped. Scarber has about 235,000 still, and Sharaskin is pushing up toward 700,000.
