Day 2 Started

Day 2 About To Be Underway!

Eric Buchman - 3rd in Chips
Eric Buchman - 3rd in Chips

Welcome back to the Rio! Yesterday, we had 8 levels of Limit Hold'em action, and after the dust settled Tom Cage was looking down on everyone else with a whopping 50,500 in chips. By our counts, that was nearly 20,000 more then anyone else in the room! He will certainly be the biggest force to be reckoned as play gets back underway today.

Cage will have a ton of stiff competition to deal with, however. Former November Niner and bracelet winner Eric Buchman is coming into today with 32,000 in chips. Two other November Niners from 2010 are still in: John Racener and Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi. They are also joined by Jennifer Harman, Isaac Haxton, and Justin Bonomo.

Team PokerStars is also well represented at this Day 2. We have Randy Lew, Humberto Brenes, Nacho Barbero, Chad Brown, and Jason Mercier all bracelet hunting — as Mercier likes to put it.

We will be playing 10 levels today, or until we reach the final nine players. Once that is done, the players will bag up their chips and return tomorrow to play out the rest of the tournament. Stay tuned to Pokernews for updates all day!

Mercier Off To Good Start

Jason Mercier came into today as one of the short stacks with just 6,500 in chips. He's sitll fairly short, but he's going in the right direction, as he just won a pot to get up to nearly 10,000. We caught the action on the flop reading {6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. Chad Brown and Marco Traniello checked to Mercier, who fired out a bet of 600. Both players called, and the turn was the {6-Spades}. Again, both players check to Mercier, who again fired out a bet of 1,200 this time. Both players released their hands, and Mercier collected the pot.

Day 2 Table Of Death With Some Controversy

Level 9 : 300/600, 0 ante

There are a couple dozen notable names still in the field, and for the most part, they are spread out evenly throughout the purple section. However, there's one table that has caught our eye: table 425.

Seat 1: Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi
Seat 2: Matt Glantz
Seat 3: JC Tran
Seat 7: Eric Buchman

There was a little bit of controversy early on. We walked by and saw that Tran made a raise in early position, and everyone folded, including Mizrachi in the big blind. Tran folded his cards towards Mizrachi so he could look at them, and Buchman took exception.

"If this is going to happen all day I'm going to say something now. That's the second time that's happened. You can't just show one person your cards." After him and Glantz exchanged a few calm words, the issue seemed to be resolved. We will keep an eye on it throughout the day and let you know if there is another incident.

Lew Leads Out The Whole Way

Action folded to our chip leader Tom Cage in the small blind, and he limped in. Lew raised from the big blind, and Cage called. The board ran down {6-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{4-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. On every street, Cage checked to Lew, Lew bet, and Cage instantly called. On the river, Lew showed {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for trip kings, and Cage mucked his hand. That put Lew up to almost 20,000, while Cage dropped down to 35,000.

Update From Table 421

We mentioned the table of death earlier today, but table 421 also has it's fare share of star power. When the day started, Jason Mercier, Chad Brown, and Marco Traniello were rubbing elbows in the 1, 2, and 3 seats. Well one of those players has dominated so far, and to no one's real surprise, it's Mercier. He started the day with just 6,500 in chips, but in just 30 minutes of play, he's worked it up to 16,000.

We can assume he got a fair amount of those chips from Brown and Traniello. The latter started the day with 21,800, but he's plummeted all the way down to 6,600 as of just now. And sorry to all the Chad Brown fans out there, but he has been eliminated. We will be sure to keep tabs on Mercier and his growing stack as the day moves on.

Tran Tussles With Glantz

Action folded around to Matt Glantz, and he raised it up to 1,200. JC Tran was next to act, and he quickly put in a reraise. Glantz was the lone caller, and they went heads up to a flop of {k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Glantz check called a quick bet from Tran, and the {a-Spades} hit the turn. Glantz checked, and Tran kept his foot on the gas, betting out 1,200. This time Glantz gave his hand up, giving the pot to Tran, who is up to almost 20,000.
