Day 1 Started

Big Field Expected for Event 19

Welcome back to PokerNews' coverage of the 2012 World Series of Poker. Today's noon event is another $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em and it's going to be a big one.

The first $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event attracted a field of 2,101 players. Brent Hanks earned his first gold bracelet with the win and pocketed a whopping $517,725. Another couple thousand players are expected to be in action for this one.

The cards are scheduled to be in the air at 12:00 PM local time here in Las Vegas at the Rio. Stay tuned for the coverage/

Sands and Moutinho Together in Action

Level 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

Last year in the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event, David "Doc" Sands and his now fiancé Erika Moutinho ran deep, finishing in 30th and 29th, respectively. Both of them earned $242,636. Here in Event 19: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em, Moutinho has taken her seat just a few feet in front of us while Sands is seated over at the diagonally adjacent table about 20 feet away.

Moutinho and Sands seated together at the feature table in last year's WSOP Main Event

Coupling Moutinho's recent success on the felt with Sands' very stout record, the two are presently considered one of the best poker couples around, if not the best. We'll be sure to keep an eye on them here today as they start up another quest for a gold bracelet.

Last year, our very own Lynn Gilmartin tested Sands on how much he knows about his lady in an edition of the WAG Diaries. Check out the video here.

Cousineau Continues His Grind for First Gold Bracelet

Tony Cousineau
Tony Cousineau

We just mentioned David "Doc" Sands and Erika Moutinho are seated within close view as we just mentioned, but also right nearby is Tony Cousineau. Cousineau is 17th on the list for All-Time World Series of Poker Cashes with 51. He's just one cash behind Brent Carter, "Miami" John Cernuto and David Chiu, which is very good company.

Now although Cousineau holds so many WSOP cashes, he has yet to win a gold bracelet. He's come close a few times with six final tables, but he's never finished better than fourth place. Below are the six WSOP final table results Cousineau has to his credit.

  • 2000 $5,000 Seven Card Stud: 6th - $20,200
  • 2001 $1,500 Omaha: 4th - $12,570
  • 2002 $3,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em: 6th $17,300
  • 2003 $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha: 7th - $5,000
  • 2004 $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em: 8th - $17,880
  • 2005 $5,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em: 5th - $67,400

Polychronopoulos Gets Value with Jacks from Rubie

Level 2 : 25/50, 0 ante

Young Australian superstar Brendon Rubie is seated with 2011 World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Athanasios Polychronopoulos. Last year, Polychronopoulos won one of these $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em events for $650,223, so he knows a thing or two about building a stack.

On this hand, Rubie opened to 75 from middle position and Polychronopoulos called out of the cutoff seat. The player in the big blind also called and the flop came down {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}. The big blind and Rubie checked. Polychronopoulos fired 150 and the big blind folded. Rubie called.

The turn card was the {5-Hearts} and both players checked to see the {2-Clubs} fall on the river. Rubie checked and Polychronopoulos fired 325. Rubie made the call, but mucked his hand without showing after Polychronopoulos turned ove the {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for two pair.
