Gold Section Review: Richard Hughes & Dylan Hortin

When we first walked around the Gold Section there was one man who stood a good 10,000 ahead of his competitors and he was a multiple World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet holder. Ryan Hughes holds bracelets in two different formats of Seven Card Stud, but has scores in virtually every game there is. In short, this kid can play poker. But we did say WAS 10,000 ahead of everyone else. Here are two pots involving Hughes - one good and one…not so good.

A man with slicked back grey hair and silver rimmed glasses raised to 700 in early position. The action folded around to Hughes, in the cutoff, and he made the call. The flop was {Q-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {8-Clubs} and the initial raiser check-called a 1,100 Hughes bet. Pot control was the order of the turn, when both players checked at the sight of the {5-Hearts}. Finally we saw the {4-Diamonds} on fifth street and the initial raiser check-called a 4,200 Hughes bet. Hughes calmly turned over {5-Spades} {4-Clubs}, like all players holding winning hands do, and the initial raiser flipped over a frustrated looking {10-Spades} {10-Hearts}.

Then Dylan Hortin raised from mid-position before Hughes three-bet to 1,600. Back to Hortin and he immediately made it 3,475, Hughes then made it 5,600, Hortin announced all-in and Hughes called.

Hortin{A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}
Hughes{Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}

Board: {8-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {3-Hearts}

The total all-in bet by Hortin was 15,450 and he moved slightly ahead of Hughes on 32,000 chips.

Affleck Continues to Climb

There was a raise from under the gun to 500 and Matt Affleck made the three-bet from the button to 1,250. The initial raiser called and the dealer placed three cards down onto the felt - {J-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {7-Spades}. The initial raiser checked, Affleck bet 1,600 and the initial raiser called. Onto the turn and the {K-Hearts} and the initial raiser check-folded to an Affleck all-in bet. Matt Affleck is now up to 20,500 chips.

Movers and Shakers in The Red Section

The legend of Costa Rica, and two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner, Humberto Brenes has just joined the table occupied by Kyle Weir and John Juanda. Brenes has settled in nicely and has 14,000.

Jeff Sluzinski is having a great WSOP. He finished in 38th place in Event #19: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em for $10,721 and now has a pre-dinner snack of 35,000 chips. How did he win them?

"I just got aces a lot that's all," said Sluzinski.

But Sluzinski's pile of chips is nothing compared to the pre dinner chip leader. That honor belongs to Eric Price who has amassed 60,000 chips.

JJ Liu Moving Along Nicely

JJ Liu has 22 World Series of Poker (WSOP) cashes dating back as far as 1996, and she now has 13,300 chips after getting it in {A-Spades} {A-Hearts} v {K-Hearts} {K-Clubs} to take 3,075 from her eliminated opponent.

Bronze Section Update

After a scout through the Bronze section of the Brasilia room there are no freakishly big stacks to write about. Marvin Rettenmaier is no longer in the event, the players on the table told us that he lost a flip {3-} {3-} v {K-} {Q-} and we did see Todd Terry win a small pot. Other than that not much to write home about.

We caught the action on a flop of {A-Clubs} {8-Spades} {6-Diamonds}, Todd Terry was in early position and he was heads-up versus a player in the cutoff. Terry bet 600 and his opponent called. The turn card was the {7-Clubs} and Terry fired again, this time for 1,600, and the cutoff called. The final card was the {Q-Spades} and both players checked. Terry turned over {A-Spades} {6-Spades} for two pair and it was enough to drag in a decent sized pot.

Gold and Silver Section Update

The two players who have the most chips in the Gold and Silver sections are relatively unknown. Kim Pham has 29,000 chips and just behind him is Tim Ryan who has 27,000. Kim Pham has some decent company as well. Michael 'munchenHB' Telker is sitting to his direct left holding onto 5,000 chips.

Andrew Teng finished in 5th place in Event #45: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em during last years series. He earned $105,262 for that performance and he currently has 10,000 chips.

David Vamplew is another British pro who came close last year. Vamplew finishing in 4th place for $141,030 in Event #10: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em. Vamplew currently has 7,000 to his name.
