Day 1 Ends Short of the Money, Barnhart Leads

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Sam Barnhart leads the field.
Sam Barnhart leads the field.

Day 1 of Event 43, $1,500 No Limit Hold’em, of the World Series of Poker is in the books after 2,770 entrants took to the felt. When action wrapped up just 320 players remained in the field. Leading them all is Sam Barnhart with 169,300.

Chasing Barnhart are Henry Lu (141,600), Andres Sanchez (115,000) and John Nelson (114,000). There are plenty of notables remaining in the field including: Randy Lew, Pius Heinz, James Mackey, Chino Rheem, Mark Radoja, Tommy Vedes, Ryan Tepen, Neil Channing, Nick Rampone, Cherish Andrews, Andy Frankeberger, Carter Phillips, Marvin Rettenmaier and Huy Nguyen.

With so many eliminations many notables hit the rail today. David Williams, Liv Boeree, Rene Angelil, Faraz Jaka, Robert Iler, Carlos Mortensen, Bernard Lee, Vanessa Rousso, David “Doc” Sands, Phil Collins, Darryll Fish, Jake Cody, Kara Scott, Joe Cada, Andre Akkari and Barry Greenstein were some of them.

After the dinner break the field was trimmed to just 770 players, a full 2,000 players had been eliminated. Up to that point an average of three players were busting every minute.

Barnhart joined the leaderboard after he got in a hand with an opponent on a {Q-} {Q-} {2-} flop. Barnhart bet and was called all the way to the river. On the river Barnhart committed ¾ of his stack and his opponent insta-shoved all in. Barnhart snap-called and tabled {Q-} {2-}. His opponent held {2-} {2-} a paid Barnhart off in full.

Sands had an above average stack for most of the day. But his day turned sour quickly after the dinner break. Sands was on the button and had his stack whittled down. The player in the cutoff open-shoved and Sands thought about his action. After just 20 seconds a player not involved in the hand called the clock on Sands.

A floorman was summoned and as per their procedure asked the dealer if Sands had had sufficient time to act on his hand. The dealer replied no and an argument ensued between the player that called the clock and the floorman.

The floorman ended the argument to point out a hand was still in play. Sands shoved holding {K-} {Q-} and the player in the cutoff had pocket eights. Sands bricked on the board and left in frustration.

Day 2 will see cards in the air promptly at 1:00 p.m. PST in the Purple Section of the Amazon Room. Follow all the WSOP action live as we play down to a final table on PokerNews.com.

A player at Sam Barnhart's table just recounted a hand to us that gave Barnhart a mountain of chips. A player in the cutoff min-raised to open and Barnhart called out of the small blind.

The flop came {Q-} {Q-} {2-}, Barnhart bet and his opponent called. The turn came {4-}, Barnhart bet and his opponent called. The river came a blank and Barnhart bet 3/4 of his stack. His opponent insta-shoved and Barnhart snap-called.

Huy Nguyen poised for a deep run.

We caught up with WSOPC standout Huy Nguyen on the button in a three-way pot. The board showed {J-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} and Nguyen bet 1,025 after action was checked to him. One player folded but another called.

The turn came {4-Spades} and both players checked. The river came {Q-Clubs}, the unknown player bet 2,000 and Nguyen quickly raised to 5,200. His opponent thought for a minute and then tossed his cards away.

Sands Out, Has Clock Called After 20 Seconds

David Sands eliminated.
David Sands eliminated.

Over on Table 10 in the Gold Section a player called the clock on David "Doc" Sands after about 20 seconds. The floor supervisor arrived and asked the dealer if he's had a reasonable amount of time to make a decision.

The dealer replied no and the floorman refused to start a clock on Sands.

"He takes eight seconds to open a pot," the complainer said.

"Sir, we're not playing online poker," the floorman replied.

"So I can take 20 seconds to make every decision?" the complainer asked.

"Let's draw a line somewhere between common sense and courtesy," Michael "Carwash" Schneider said.

The floor instructed the table to play cards because there was a hand in progress.

The result of the hand was Chad Wiedenhoeft fout-bet all in and Sands called. Sands held {K-} {Q-} and Wiedenhoeft held pocket eights. Sands didn't connect with the board and was eliminated.

He walked away shaking his head.

Andy Frankenberger is seated just one table away from Allen Kessler. Kessler just made his way into the Brasilia Room and told Frankenberger about his recent video poker score.

Kessler advised that he was playing Double Double Bonus on a certain day where the points are multiplied. Then he was dealt quad sixes and won a couple tournament buy ins.

"Don't print how much I won. You can take a photo of my t shirt though," Kessler said.

He's wearing a custom made Chainsaw t shirt from the "Chainsaw Collection." Please contact him should you want to have one of your own.

Team Pro Offers Wise Advise

Liv Boeree lighting up the room as always.
Liv Boeree lighting up the room as always.

PokerStars Team Pro Liv Boeree has heard and seen a lot of things at the tables. She may not be used to some the American players that find their way out to the tables on the weekend.

She's currently seated close to a gentleman, wearing a pocket aces t shirt, who just survived an all in. He shoved preflop with pocket queens and was called by {A-} {K-}. He survived, doubled up and took a huge sigh of relief.

"If I win the bracelet I'm buying you all lunch," the man said to the table.

"You've got a long way to go," Boeree told him.

The gentleman continued to talk about hands over the past few days to no one in particular at the table.

Anyone care to set the odds on whether the lovely British Pro will take him up on a lunch date?
