Sowers Down Early

We saw a pot brewing with Mike Sowers so we went to go check it out. We saw ther was about 5,000 in the middle, and that Sowers was heads up with another player. The board read {j-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Spades}{q-Clubs}, and Sowers had bet 2,400. However, his opponent raised it up to 10,000, and Sowers was in the tank. He asked his opponent if he could beat two pair, but he got no reaction. Eventually, Sowers folded his cards about two feet in the air, and his opponent took the pot.

After that hit, Sowers is down to 22,000.

St-Pierre Hurting

Picking up the action on the turn of a {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{A-Hearts} board, Georges St-Pierre check-called a bet of 600 from an opponent and then led out for 1,000 when the {9-Diamonds} hit the river. A large raise to 6,000 came from St-Pierre's opponent and that was called immediately by St-Pierre.

His opponent tabled {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} for the nut straight, besting St-Pierre's {K-Hearts}{9-Clubs} to leave the injured UFC Welterweight champion below the 10,000-chip mark.

Kuether Can't Call

Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger opened to 500 from under the gun and found one caller directly behind him in Joe Kuether - who recently placed third in Event 54: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em.

The flop came {J-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Lichtenberger tossed out a c-bet to 600. Kuether responded by raising to 1,550 and, after some thought, Lichtenberger made the call.

Both players checked the {7-Clubs} turn, however, when the {8-Hearts} completed the board, Lichtenberger fired for 2,200. Kuether slid his hand to the muck and Lichtenberger scooped the pot.

Lichtenberger is sitting right around the starting stack, while Kuether has 38,000 following the hand.

Former Main Event Champ in Tan, Baby

Scotty Nguyen has just taken his seat over in the Tan Section. The 1998 Main Event champion's lone cash at this year's World Series of Poker comes from Event 24: $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better where Nguyen placed second. First place was the only thing on Nguyen's mind, but alas he came up short. Today Nguyen has the chance to make up for the loss, by making a deep run here in the Main Event. We will make sure to keep an eye on the ever entertaining Nguyen as he competes for another Main Event victory.

A few tables away sits Richard Toth. The Hungarian poker pro happened to be playing a hand and here is what happened. The table folded around to Toth in the hijack and he raised it up to 450. The cutoff made the call and the rest of the table folded.

The dealer spread a {8-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop, it was here that Toth continued for 550. The cutoff called rather quickly and both players were off to the turn.

The {2-Clubs} landed on fourth street and we had a repeat of action with Toth betting out, this time 1,100 and the cutoff quickly calling. The {Q-Clubs} on the river wasn't going to slow down Toth who bet out 2,600. The cutoff then took a few seconds to ponder before throwing out a call.

Toth flipped over {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for the straight and the cutoff sat in mild disgust as he threw his cards into the muck.

Filling in the Gaps

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

As hands proceed, table talk fills the gaps between hands. It's fairly quiet right now over in the blue section, where those three feature tables are located. Quiet enough for those playing to overhear Ali Nejad in the corner shooting some video for ESPN in which he sounds as though he's narrating an end-of-day intro in which he's talking about Day 1b having already concluded.

At Dan Harrington's table they began remarking on how Nejad spoke as though he knew how things were going to end today, with Jeff "PKRGSSP" Walsh and Katie Dozier laughing and joining in the conversation.

That led Harrington to recall a story about Ronald Reagan from well before his days as an actor and president, back when he worked as a radio broadcaster in the 1930s.

Reagan apparently would deliver play-by-play accounts of Chicago Cubs baseball games via reports sent to him via telegraph as if he were there. The way the story goes, on one occasion the telegraph died and Reagan continued to deliver the action, inventing it wholesale, for several minutes until communication was restored. A clever bit of gap-filling, that.

Flush Draw Turned Two Pair for Greenstein

There was 1,050 in the middle and the flop had come all hearts — {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts} — when Barry Greenstein led from the small blind with a bet of 750. His opponent sitting one seat over in the big blind then raised to 1,700, and Greenstein called. The turn was the {J-Clubs}, and this time Greenstein checked, his opponent bet 2,975, and Greenstein called.

The river brought the {A-Diamonds} and another check from Greenstein. This time his opponent fired 5,000, and Greenstein called again. The big blind turned over {7-Spades}{5-Spades} for two pair, but Greenstein had {A-Hearts}{J-Spades} for a better two pair and he took the pot.
