Cheong Chips Up Early

We caught up with the action just as the dealer was scooping the preflop pot into the middle. It appeared that Percy Mahatan opened from early position and was three-bet by Joseph Cheong on the button. Everyone folded back to Mahatan, who made the call.

The flop came {J-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and Mahatan checked to Cheong, who fired 60,000 into the middle. Mahatan quickly slid his hand into the muck and Cheong scooped the pot.

Cheong is up to 1.5 million in the early going.

Du Plessis Doubles Through Farrell

Eugene Du Plessis was all in preflop with {A-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and up against the {K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} of Niall Farrell, who was in the small blind. The {5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} flop wasn't anything special, and neither was the {J-Spades} turn. Farrell needed either a king or seven on the river to eliminate his opponent, but it was not meant to be as the {9-Diamonds} blanked.

Malherbe Doubles Through Haddox

Jean Malherbe was just all in for about 400,000 with {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and hoping his hand would hold versus the {K-Spades}{5-Spades} of Randy Haddox.

We arrived as the turn card was being dealt, at which point the board showed {5-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts}. Both players had pairs, though Malherbe's was the better one. The dealer then burned a card and delivered the {J-Clubs} river. "Ooooh," said Maddox, noting how the jack looked like a king at first. Malherbe survives with the double up, and the pair now have roughly even stacks.

Kornuth KO's Silberzweig

Over on the feature table, Matthew Silberzweig raised it up to 31,000 in middle position. It folded around to Chance Kornuth in the big blind, and he moved all in, which put Silberzweig to a decision for the rest of his 330,000. He made the call, and when the cards were tabled, he was out in front.

Kornuth: {q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}
Silberzweig: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

Kornuth was looking for a queen or a three, and he caught that queen when the flop came {5-Hearts}{q-Spades}{8-Hearts}. The {6-Clubs} on the turn was no help for Silberzweig, and the river came the {2-Spades}. Silberzweig headed to the rail, while Kornuth collected the chips, and is now over a million.

Khun Beats Shelton In Race

We got to the table to find Chanracy Khun all in before the flop for his tournament life with {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Khun was up against the {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs} of Michael Shelton and the two were racing.

The flop fell {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and Khun's pocket tens were still in the lead. They stayed that way through the {4-Clubs} on fourth street and the {6-Spades} on fifth. With that pot, Khun is now sitting on 670,000 in chips.

Carrillo Crushed By Selbst's Quads

Action folded over to Vanessa Selbst in the small blind, who asked Nicholas Carrillo (who was in the big blind), how much he had left.

"A bit over 200,000," Carrillo said.

"Alright, I'm all in," Selbst said.

Carrillo quickly pushed his remaining stack into the middle and hands were revealed.

Selbst: {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Carrillo: {A-Spades}{8-Clubs}

Carrillo had a slight lead going to the flop, and would keep that lead as it was dealt out {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}.

However, the {10-Clubs} turn gave Selbst trip tens and left Carrillo drawing slim.

The river?

{10-Spades} - leaving Selbst with quads and ensuring Carrillo's fate of elimination.

Selbst is up to 1.9 million after that one.

Chips for Mefodichev

Vladimir Mefodichev opened for 25,000 from early position and Eric Cloutier called from the hijack seat. It folded to Gaelle Baumann on the button, who looked over at Cloutier, then reraised to 77,000.

The blinds got out, then Mefodichev thought for about a half-minute before reraising himself to 162,000. Cloutier quickly folded, and after a pause Baumann let her hand go, too.
