More than a week ago, the 2012 World Series of Poker kicked off the 43rd Annual $10,000 Main Event, which attracted 6,598 players and created a prize pool of $62,021,200. Now, as Day 6 begins, only 97 runners remain, each with their eyes firmly fixed on making the “Octo-Nine” and capturing the $8,527,982 first-place prize.

The man best position to make a deep run is Kyle Keranen, who is sitting on the biggest stack in the room with 6,935,000. Not far behind are Robert Salaburu who finished Day 5 with a stack of 6,195,000, and Taylor Paur, who bagged up 5,820,000.

Joining these men are an eclectic mix of amateurs and pros. David “ODB” Baker (1,360,000) has had a tremendous summer, winning his first gold bracelet and making three other final tables, and now he finds himself in contention for the Main Event title and 2012 Player of the Year honors (he’ll need to finish eighth or better. Another man looking to accomplish an impressive feat is Sam Holden, who is looking to make back-to-back final tables after finishing ninth last year.

Joining these two are Gaelle Baumann (3,980,000), Jan Heitmann (3,410,000), Amnon Filippi (3,400,000), Elisabeth Hille (3,390,000), A.J. Gavin Smith Eliminated in 96th Place ($62,061)

Gavin Smith (Day 5) Eliminated
Gavin Smith (Day 5) Eliminated

Over at the secondary feature table, action folded around to World Series of Poker bracelet winner Gavin Smith on the button. Smith moved his short stack of 545,000 all in. Eric Legoff moved all in over the top from the small blind and the big blind folded his hand. The cards were revealed to show that Smith was racing for his tournament life.

Smith: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Legoff: {J-}{J-}

Smith was looking for an ace or a queen heading to the flop, but instead only found {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Fourth street brought the {10-Diamonds} and Smith was one card away from elimination.

The {8-Hearts} struck the river and Smith was forced to settle for an early exit here on Day 6.

Paur Lightens Gee's Stack, Takes Chip Lead

Taylor Paur took the chip lead on the last hand.
Taylor Paur took the chip lead on the last hand.

Taylor Paur opened for 100,000 under the gun and Steven Gee made it 260,000 to play from middle position. The blinds released and Paur called.

The flop came {3-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {K-Clubs}, Paur checked, Gee bet 160,000 and Paur called. The turn came {5-Clubs}, Paur led out for 480,000 and Gee called. The river came {2-Diamonds} and Paur took a few minutes to bet 1,200,000.

Gee tanked for a good while and his body language signaled he wasn't happy with Paur's bet. Gee hemmed and hawed and ultimately mucked his hand, surrendering the million plus pot to Paur.

Hille Tears Up The Table; Eric Buchman Eliminated in 74th Place ($88,070); Andrew Flaherty Eliminated in 75th Place ($88,070)

Eric Buchman
Eric Buchman

Andrew Flaherty had been short for quite some time, and he just pushed all in for his final 130,000 chips. The action was folded to Eric Buchman, and he called from the small blind. Table chip leader Elisabeth Hille gave it some thought, and called from the big blind.

The flop came down {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}, and both players checked quickly.

On the turn the {7-Hearts} hit, and Buchman moved all in for 775,000 chips. Hille double checked her cards, and called rather quickly.

"Do you have a flush?" Buchman asked with a worried look on his face.

"No. Two pair," Hille said, and Buchman's look turned from disgust into disbelief.

"What do you have?" Buchman asked Flaherty who turned over {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}. The former November Nine finalist showed {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}, and both were trailing Hille's {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}.

The river brought the {8-Diamonds}, and both Buchman and Flaherty were eliminated. After finishing fourth in 2009, Buchman made another very impressive run, but his tournament ended on Day 6.

Vanessa Selbst Eliminated in 73rd Place ($88,070)

Vanessa Selbst All In
Vanessa Selbst All In

Action folded around to Vanessa Selbst, who became the first woman to win a bracelet in an open event since she did it in 2008 (she won Event 52: $2,500 10-Game Mix - Six-Handed earlier this summer), and she moved all in for 750,000 from the button. The small blind got out of the way, but Greg Merson made the call from the big blind.

Showdown
Selbst: {Q-Hearts}{7-Spades}
Merson: {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

According to our PokerNews Odds Calculator, Selbst had a 33.71% chance of winning the hand, but that improved to 45.35% when the flop came down {7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{10-Spades} and gave her a pair. While she was currently out in front, Merson's overs and flush draw made him the favorite in the hand.

The {6-Hearts} turn gave Merson an added gut-shot straight draw, but his chances of winning did drop to 40.90% with one card to come. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {9-Diamonds}. It was a dagger through Selbst's heart as Merson made his straight and put an end to her deep run in 73rd place, good for $88,070.

Buckenmayer Wins 6MM-Chip Pot

Robert Buckenmayer
Robert Buckenmayer

From under the gun, Russell Thomas raised to 100,000. Play folded to Robert Buckenmayer in the hijack seat and he reraised to 235,000. Things then moved to David Kluchman in the small blind and he reraised to 400,000. Action folded back to Buckenmayer and he made a mistake of thinking he only had to call 65,000 more, not 165,000. He tossed in the 65,000, but the dealer instructed him that he needed to call 100,000 more. He did so and the flop came down {8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Clubs}.

On the flop, Kluchman led for 500,000 and Buckenmayer made the call to see the {6-Spades} pair the board on the turn. Kluchman checked and Buckenmayer took a minute before checking behind.

The river completed the board with the {3-Clubs} and Kluchman moved all in. Buckenmayer snap-called with turned over the {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} for top full house. Kluchman couldn't believe it.

"Ship it," said Buckenmayer sternly as he stood from his chair.

"Sir, don't say that, it's not nice," commented Amnon Filippi from Seat 9. Buckenmayer sat back down.

Buckenmayer's stack was counted down and he was all in for 1.995 million on the river, creating a massive pot of nearly six million and sending it his way. Kluchman was knocked all the way down to 490,000.

Jason Somerville Eliminated in 69th Place ($106,056)

Jason Somerville
Jason Somerville

Jason Somerville got lucky not long ago when his nines cracked Eric Buchman's tens in an all-in preflop situation, but it seemed lady luck has turned her back. In a recent hand, Somerville raised to 105,000 from middle position only to have Jacob Balsiger move all in from the big blind. Somerville quickly called off for 840,000 and was a big favorite.

Showdown
Somerville: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Balsiger: {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Unfortunately for Somerville, the flop came down {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{10-Hearts} and gave Balsiger trips. Somerville needed a queen to stay alive, but it was not to be as the {3-Hearts} appeared on the turn followed by the {8-Spades} on the river.

Somerville, who finished in 69th place for $106,056, did a quick exit interview with Kara Scott in which he was humble, gracious and reiterated that he had a great time.

Maag on the Move

Nicco Maag
Nicco Maag

Nicco Maag arrived a little late today, but once he got here he continued to add to his stack gradually through the first two levels. He just grabbed an extra chunk of chips here at the start of Level 27 to push up close to the 8 million-chip mark and into the chip lead.

After Danny Wong opened from middle position, Magg called from a seat over, and Robert Corcione called from the big blind, the pot was about 400,000 when the flop came {Q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}. Corcione checked, Wong made a continuation bet, and both of his opponents called. By then the pot size was about 1 million.

The turn brought the {5-Diamonds}. Corcione checked, and Wong fired a bet of 700,000. Maag then raised to 2 million even. After some thought, Corcione pushed his hand away, and eventually Wong did as well.

Another Mistake for Koroknai Results In One-Round Penalty

Andras Koroknai (Day 4)
Andras Koroknai (Day 4)

From under the gun, Andras Koroknai raised to an unknown amount and Fabrizio Gonzalez reraised from the next seat to 305,000. Play folded back to Koroknai and he moved all in for approximately 2.4 million. According to Paul Volpe, Gonzalez asked for a count, but Koroknai thought he said call and turned his hand over to reveal the {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. The floor was called and it was ruled that Koroknai would be given a one-round penalty. Gonzalez folded his hand.

This is the second big mistake Koroknai has made deep in the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event. Yesterday, he missed action in front of him and moved all in when he didn't see Gaelle Baumann raise before mucking his hand before she had acted. No penalty was given then. This time around, he'll have to sit out for the next orbit.

Wong Scores Huge Double Through Maag

Danny Wong Doubles
Danny Wong Doubles

We got the table in time to see the players turn their hands over after an all in and a call so we do not know the amounts of the raises. We do know that Danny Wong raised from the button and Nicco Maag three-bet from the small blind.

Wong four-bet and Maag announced a five-bet all in. Wong snap called with {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} and was crushing Maag's {j-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}.

The board fell {10-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and Wong never lifted his head from the table for the entire deal. Once the river struck, Maag tapped the table and Wong lifted his head, a gleeful expression on his face. Wong is now among the chip leaders with 7,700,000 in chips while Maag has suffered a huge hit, his stack at 4,530,000.
