Three Rounds in the Books; 32 Return for Day 2

Level 9 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Phil Hellmuth Among 32 Returning Players
Phil Hellmuth Among 32 Returning Players

It was an action packed day here in the Amazon room of the Rio as 162 players came out to participate in Event #16: $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em. Three full rounds of play were completed which leaves only 32 players returning for Day 2 where the top 16 will cash and continue on their path toward the coveted WSOP bracelet and the $331,190 in first-place prize money.

After three long rounds of play, the returning field is stack with some of the biggest names in poker. Just a few of the returning players include Jason Mercier, Phil Hellmuth, Melanie Weisner, Sam Trickett, Michael Mizrachi, Ali Eslami, AP Phahurat, Randy Lew, and Ben Sulsky.

The day began with 34 players participating in round one while 128 players received a bye to the second round. The players who were eliminated in this first round received $5,000, or half of their buy in back. Despite being only 34 players, this field was fairly stacked. Some of the biggest names in poker participated in round one and were unable to find the first victory necessary to continue their quest to glory. The likes of Phil Ivey, Vanessa Selbst, Tom Marchese, Jonathan Duhamel, Dario Minieri, and Ben Lamb all found themselves eliminated from play in the first round.

Once the first round saw its conclusion, there came a bit of controversy over the draw of the bracket. This led to the tournament being put on half for about thirty minutes in order to create a new re-draw for the players. Once this round kicked off, 128 of pokers elite squared off in head to head competition against one another. As the field gets cut in half every round, it is expected to see many of the game's great fall and this round was no exception. Daniel Negreanu, Scott Seiver, Faraz Jaka, Antonio Esfandiari, and Andrew Lichtenberger are just a small sample size of those to hit the rail.

The final round of the night began with 64 players and would not come to a close until 32 remained. During this round, Martin Jacobson, Byron Kaverman, Chino Rheem, Ludovic Lacay, and many others fell victim to their opponents. Fireworks also occurred during the match between Paul Volpe and Phil Galfond that saw the latter moving on to the round of 32. The two got it all in for Volpe's tournament life on a {8-Clubs}{9-Spades}{K-Clubs} board. Volpe held {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and was in the lead over Galfond's {7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. Despite having the clubs covered, Volpe fell behind when the {7-Spades} paired Galfond on the turn and the {5-Diamonds} on the river sealed the deal for Volpe's elimination.

Mercier Advances

Jason Mercier Finds Victory
Jason Mercier Finds Victory

Jason Mercier has advanced to the final 32 players.

With about 67,000 behind, Mercier made it 12,000 from the button and Nestor Martinez called. The flop came {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-} and Martinez shipped all in. Mercier called with {Q-}{2-Clubs} and was ahead of Martinez's {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. Martinez failed to improve and Mercier was able to double up.

On the next hand, Mercier and Martinez got it all in once again but this time it was for Martinez's tournament life. Mercier held {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} and was up against Martinez's {Q-}{10-}.

The board ran out {J-}{10-}{8-}{5-}{K-} and Mercier was able to clinch the victory.

Melanie Weisner Busts Chino Rheem

Melanie Weisner Busts Chino Rheem Here in Round 3
Melanie Weisner Busts Chino Rheem Here in Round 3

After playing two of the longest matches in the first two rounds, Melanie Weisner just dispatched Chino Rheem in yet another marathon heads-up session.

The crippling hand occurred on a {5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{a-Spades} board, when Weisner responded to a check by Rheem with an all-in shove for 29,000.

Rheem tanked for a while before ultimately deciding to release his hand, but he asked Weisner for the courtesy of seeing a single card from her hand. She obliged, allowing Rheem to choose the card, and he turned over the {J-Hearts}. Afterward, he told Wesiner that he folded trip fives, thinking she had made a straight.

Soon after this fold, Rheem was all-in with {K-}{10-} against Wesiner's {A-}{7-}, and the ace-high held up to send her into the Round of 32.

The two friends began the match with Rheem telling a late arriving Weisner that her stack was being blinded off, and when the chips were stacked in Weisner's corner she couldn't resist the chance to get a needle in of her own.

"Is that 2-for-2 or 3-for-3 against you heads up?" she asked, with a mischievous smile spreading across her face.

"I think that's 80-for-80," he answered quickly, showing that every poker player remembers the losses more than the wins.

A Hero Can Save Us

Level 3 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Davidi Kitai in His Superhero Costume
Davidi Kitai in His Superhero Costume

We just witnessed a prime example of why the big buy-in events at the WSOP are considered to be the pinnacle of high-level poker.

With the board reading {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, Joe Cada moved all-in and put Davidi Kitai to the ultimate test for his tournament life.

Kitai went deep into the tank and sat still as a statue, staring intently across the table at Cada searching for some semblance of a read. After more than five minutes of deliberation, during which Cada returned Kitai's stare with a level gaze of his own, the Belgian pro had still not come to a decision.

Eventually, Cada elected to call for a clock, but before the tournament staff could make it over with a timer, Kitai plunked his stack into the pot for a call.

Cada's shoulders slouched when he realized Kitai had called, and he reluctantly turned over {K-}{3-} for a stone bluff. Kitai tabled the {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds} for a rivered pair, and with this hero call he doubled his way back into the match.

Daniel Simms Doubles Through Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth Does Not Like Doubling Players Up
Phil Hellmuth Does Not Like Doubling Players Up

After a few hands of back and forth raise-and-takes, Daniel Simms moved in with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} and was quickly called by the "Poker Brat."

Hellmuth tabled {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}, and after Simms wished the 13-time WSOP bracelet winner good luck, the dealer rolled out a {4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} final board.

This win moved Simms back into a healthy chip position, and he will have a little more room to maneuver against one of the most accomplished poker players in the world.

Phil Galfond Draws Thin to Down Paul Volpe

Holding the {7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, Phil Galfond hit a flush draw on the {8-Clubs}{9-Spades}{k-Clubs} flop, and he managed to get his stack in the middle on the come.

Unfortunately for Galfond, Paul Volpe also held clubs with {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, but when the {7-Spades} arrived on the turn he took an unlikely lead in the hand. The {5-Diamonds} on the river changed nothing, and with that Galfond earned an entrance into the Round of 32.

Joe Cada On to the Next One

Joe Cada Chasing His Second Bracelet

After reaching the final table of the Six-Max event earlier in the week, Joe Cada is working his way through another tournament in steady fashion.

Cada got the rest of Timothy Adams' chips after opening for 4,800, and calling Adam's shove of 32,000 with {A-}{5-}. Holding just {Q-}{10-}, Adams needed help to survive, but a clean runout gave the match to Cada.
