Michael Gathy Wins Event #34 ($278,613)

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Michael “Timmy” Gathy
Michael “Timmy” Gathy

Two weeks ago, Davidi Kitai won his second bracelet when he took down the $5,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event, setting a Belgian record for number of World Series of Poker bracelets won. Today, Kitai is joined in the Belgian multiple bracelet winner’s club by Michael “Timmy” Gathy.

In 2012, Gathy won the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event and today he added a second bracelet to his collection by taking down the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em Turbo event.

Day 2 of this action-packed event started with 35 players from the original field of 1,629; each of the players was guaranteed at least $6,729 for the effort as the money bubble burst on Day 1. During the course of the day’s play, the tournament lost the likes of Jamie Rosen (33rd), Ognjen Sekularec (32nd), Simon Charette (18th), Sam Greenwood (17th), Jennifer Tilly (13th) and Tom Alner (12th).

The final table was reached at around 18:15 and within one hand, it had lost its first player. Russell Crane ran his {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} into Jake Cody’s {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades} and didn’t improve so became the ninth place finisher.

Another 29 hands passed before Noah Vaillancourt open-shoved from UTG+1 with what turned out to be {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and was looked up by Yueqi Zhu and his pair of red nines. The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} to send Vaillancourt to the cashier’s desk to pick up eighth place money.

Next to go was Jake Cody. The popular British pro had the infamous British railbirds cheering and jeering him on right until the final river landed on the Rio felt. Cody had earlier lost a flop with ace-king versus pocket tens and he would suffer a similar fate in his final hand. Jason Duval opened to 50,000, Cody moved all in for 417,000, Gathy re-shoved and Duval folded. Cody showed {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and was against a pair of black tens. The tens stayed best and Cody and his army of fans left the Amazon Room.

Sixth place went to Duval who busted in unfortunate circumstances. The action folded to Duval in the small blind and he attempted to steal the ample blinds and antes with an all-in raise. Unfortunately, for Duval at least, Benjamin Reason woke up in the big blind with a pair of queens, which held, to send the recent bracelet winner to the sidelines.

Five became four when Daniel Bishop committed his stack with {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} on a {9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop and was looked up by Zhu and his {K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. Zhu missed his flush draw but spiked a king on the turn to send Bishop home for an early bath.

Bishop’s exit took place on the 100th hand of the final table and it wasn’t until the 140th hand that we saw another elimination take place. Sergey Rybachenko had earlier lost all but 15,000 chips (one small blind at the time) and had mounted an epic comeback that saw him double up in four times! However, any hopes of him becoming the Russian Jack Straus were ended when his {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs} couldn’t improve to come from behind to beat the {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs} of Gathy.

Two hands later and Zhu was sent to the rail, again by Gathy. On a flop that read {9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{K-Hearts}, Gathy led for 90,000. Zhu moved all-in with his {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Gathy called with {K-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. Zhu received no help from the turn or river and the tournament moved to the heads-up stages.

Going into the one-on-one battle, Gathy held an almost 4-to-1 chip lead and it proved too much of a gap for Reason to bridge. On the 24th hand of heads-up play and the 166th of the final table, Reason opened to 80,000, Gathy three-bet to 180,000 and Reason moved in for 905,000. Gathy called and showed {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and he was ahead of the {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} of Reason. Gathy caught a nine on the {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop, and improved to trips on the {9-Spades} turn. Gathy improved further still wen the {A-Spades} river gifted him an unnecessary full house, busting Reason and leaving Gathy to be announced as the latest WSOP champion.

Hand #165
Michael Gathy then opened to 80,000 from the button, and won the pot after a quick fold.

Hand #166
In the final hand of the night, Benjamin Reason opened to 80,000 from the button, before facing a raise to 180,000 from Michael Gathy. He looked down at his stack, before announcing all in for 905,000. Gathy took a minute to decide, carefully contemplating his decision, before making the call.

Gathy: {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Reason: {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

Gathy extended his lead on the flop of {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}, and sealed the title, when the {9-Spades} fell on the turn. The meaningless {A-Spades} completed the board, as Reason shook his opponent’s hand, finishing so close to a maiden bracelet.

Rybachenko Stages an Epic Comeback

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Sergey Rybachenko
Sergey Rybachenko

Hand 120: Sergey Rybachenko moved all in from under the gun for just 10,000 chips and Michael Gathy raised to 75,000 with {10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Rybachenko held {Q-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and when the board ran out {8-Spades}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} Rybachenko's queen-high was good and he doubled up.

Hand 121: Gathy opened to 60,000 and Rybachenko called off his few remaining chips. Gathy turned over {A-Spades}{5-Diamonds} to his opponent's {A-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, which resulted in a split pot when the board ran out {A-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

Hand 122: Reason opened to 60,000 on the button, Rybachenko moved all in for 70,000 in total from the small blind and Gathy called in the big blind. The two active players checked down the {Q-Hearts}{6-Spades}{10-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{5-Spades} board and the cards were turned onto their backs.

Gathy: {A-Clubs}{4-Spades}
Reason: {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Rybachenko: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}

Rybachenko wins with his lowly pocket deuces. Rybachenko could become the new Jack Straus!

Daniel Bishop Eliminated in 5th Place ($59,816)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Daniel Bishop
Daniel Bishop

HAND #100

The action started with Yueqi Zhu opening to 60,000 from the button, and was called by Daniel Bishop on the big blind. The flop fell {9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} as Bishop instantly moved all in for 450,000 in chips. Zhou asked for a count, and sat back in his chair for a few minutes, contemplating the call. He eventually did so, as both players tabled their cards.

Zhu: {K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Bishop: {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

Zhu spiked the {K-Hearts} on the turn to take the lead, and held, when the {6-Spades} completed the board.

Jason Duval Eliminated in 6th Place ($44,422)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Jason Duval
Jason Duval

Jason Duval has been eliminated after being caught making a move in a battle of the blinds.

Duval was first to act from the small blind and he peeked at his cards before instantly announcing he was all-in. Benjamin Reason was the big blind and he said, "I call, too."

Reason: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Duval: {Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Duval stood from his seat and let out a couple of expletives, obviously disappointed to get his chips into the middle in such bad shape. The {J-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} flop failed to help Duval and neither did the {6-Diamonds} turn. The {10-Hearts} completed the board and a disappointed Duval headed to the cashier cage to pick up sixth place money.

Gathy Doubles Through Cody

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Michael Gathy
Michael Gathy

Hand #16:
Jake Cody opened to 32,000 from the button and was met by a three bet by Michael Gathy in the small blind. The Belgian bracelet winner made it 96,000 and after the big blind folded, it was up to the English bracelet winner. Cody made it 183,000 and snap called when Gathy shoved all in for 925,000.

Cody held {A-Spades}{K-Hearts} and was in a race against Gathy's {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. The flop was really good for Gathy and gave him a near lock on the hand: {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. The {2-Hearts} on the turn sealed the deal for Gathy and the {A-Diamonds} on the river was there just for good measures.

Hand #17:
Daniel Bishop made it 45,000 from middle position and everybody folded.

Hand #18:
Sergey Rybachenko shoved all in and everybody folded.

Russell Crane Eliminated in 9th Place ($19,748)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Russell Crane
Russell Crane

Hand #1: The first hand after the announcement of the final nine players, the first casualty is there. Russell Crane opened under-the-gun plus one to 32,000 and Daniel Bishop made the call. Jake Cody in the cut off took his time and eventually made it 89,000. The button and both blinds folded and the action was back on Crane. He didn't hesitate and shoved all in. Bishop snap folded and Cody made the call.

Crane showed {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} and had some catching up to do to Cody's {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}. Crane flopped a gutshot on {5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} but wouldn't get there. The {10-Spades} on the turn and {Q-Clubs} on the river were no good for him. Crane takes home $19,748, the ramining eight players are now guaranteed $25,539.
