Mustafa Leads Final Seven; Loeser and Cada Still in Contention

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Over the past two days the 2013 World Series of Poker Event #4 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em /Six Handed tournament has saw 1,069 players reduced to the final seven. The man best positioned to capture this bracelet is Mike Mustafa, who holds 1.28 million in chips. With that said, some stiff competition stands in his way including Keven Stammen, Manig Loeser and 2009 WSOP Main Event champ Joe Cada.

Today 117 players settled into the Amazon Room for ten and a half levels of play. Nine of those players would leave empty handed as only 108 were slated to get paid. Among those who failed to secure a payday were John Nidhiry, Nasir Veerani, Aaron Kaiser, David Tuthill and the lovely Jamie Kerstetter, who was recently featured in PokerNews’ popular Online Chat series.

The money bubble occurred early in the day and it didn’t last long—just one hand in fact. There were actually three all ins on the very first hand of hand-for-hand play, but only one of them resulted in an elimination.

It happened when a short-stacked Michael McDonald of Jonesboro, Arkansas (not to be confused with Mike "Timex" McDonald) moved all in for 8,900 from the cutoff and Fabien Marguerite called from the small blind.

McDonald: {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Marguerite: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

McDonald was ahead, and according to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, he had a 55.62% chance of surviving the hand while Marguerite had a 43.94% chance. The {9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} was kind to McDonald and upped his chances to 76.67%, but the {K-Diamonds} turn was cruel as could be as it paired Marguerite and made him an overwhelming 93.18% favorite. McDonald needed an ace on the river to stay alive, but it wasn't in the cards as the {8-Diamonds} blanked. With that, McDonald left empty handed while everyone else secured a minimum payday of $2,871.

Among those who failed to survive the day but boosted their bankroll were October Nines Rob Salaburu (100th - $2,871) and Russell Thomas (96th - $2,871); the ever-boisterous Humberto Brenes (70th - $3,391); WSOP APAC bracelet winner Bryan Piccioli (63rd - $3,680); 2012 WSOP bracelet winner Craig McCorkell (59th - $3,997); Wisconsin businessman Larry Ormson (44th - $4,892); 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel (44th - $4,892); and reigning World Poker Tour Player of the Year Matt Salsberg (21st - $9,640).

Salsberg’s elimination came in Level 17 (2,000/4,000/500) when Salsberg stuck his remaining 55,000 in with the {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and John Beauprez snap-called with the {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. The board ran out {9-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{8-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and that did it for Salsberg, who we expect to play numerous events this summer.

The eliminations continued over the next three levels and included Ville Sissonen (18th - $12,122), Grant Hinkle (16th - $12,122), Aleksandr Gnatenko (14th - $12,122), Day 1 chip leader Greg Hobson (11th - $15,643), Rex Clinkscales (10th - $20,709), Fabien Marguerite (9th - $20,709) and Ami Alibay (8th - $28,155).

Ami Alibay Eliminated in 8th Place ($28,155)

Ami Alibay - 8th Place
Ami Alibay - 8th Place

Action folded to Ami Alibay who moved in his last 50,000 from the small blind. Mike Mustafa called without looking out of the big blind and the two were flipping for Ailbay's life.

Alibay: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Mustafa: {K-Spades}{J-Clubs}

Mustafa paired up on the {4-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop and never let up his lead through the {q-Clubs} turn and the {a-Diamonds} river. Alibay was sent home in 8th place and will collect $28,155 in tournament winnings.

Fabien Marguerite Eliminated in 9th Place ($20,709)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Fabien Marguerite - 9th Place
Fabien Marguerite - 9th Place

Mike Mustafa opened for 25,000 under the gun and Fabien Marguerite, who was to his direct left, moved all in for right around 200,000. The button and both blinds folded, and Mustafa snap-called.

Mustafa: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
Marguerite: {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}

It was a bad spot for Marguerite and he was in desperate need of some help. The {8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{7-Hearts} flop gave him a little as it paired his ten, but he need another or an ace to keep his bracelet hopes alive. The {3-Spades} turn wasn't what he needed, and neither was the {Q-Hearts} river. Mustafa actually improved to a set to send Marguerite to the rail in ninth place for $20,709.

Rex Clinkscales Eliminated in 10th Place ($20,709)

Rex Clinkscales

Keven Stammen raised to 23,000 from under the gun. Rex Clinkscales put his last 97,000 in with {a-Hearts}{8-Spades}. The big blind folded and Stammen thought for a while before making the call with his {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}.

The flop came the {5-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. A flopped full house for Stammen!

Clinkscales was down to little hope. The {a-Diamonds} brought Clinkscales a tiny glimmer of hope with one of the remaining Aces.

Clinkscales hopes ended on the river {10-Clubs} and he was sent packing in 10th pace for $20,709.

Greg Hobson Eliminated in 11th Place ($15,643)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Greg Hobson
Greg Hobson

Nearly 12 hours ago Greg Hobson led the returning 117 players with the biggest stack. He managed to ride that stack all the way to the final two tables, but his run just came to an end in 11th place.

It happened when Keven Stammen opened for 18,000 from the cutoff and then called when Hobson moved all in from the button for approximately 100,000.

Hobson: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Stammen: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

"Two outs," Hobson pointed out upon seeing he his pair was dominated. The {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{a-Hearts} flop gave him some runner-runner straight possibilities, but the {K-Clubs} turn quickly dashed those hopes. It was down to a nine for Hobson, but it wasn't in the cards as the {J-Clubs} peeled off.

As the start-of-the-day chip leader Hobson no doubt had dreams of a gold bracelet, but he'll have to settle for a $15,643 consolation prize instead.

Ryan Schmidt Eliminated in 13th Place ($12,122)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Ryan Schmidt
Ryan Schmidt

The eliminations have come fast and furious here in Level 19. The latest to go was Ryan Schmidt, who was dispatched by chip leader Manig Loeser.

It happened when Schmidt got his stack of approximately 165,000 all in preflop holding the {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and was called by the {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} of Manig. The {6-Spades}{5-Spades}{a-Clubs} flop paired both players' ace, but Manig's queen was the better kicker. The {2-Clubs} turn meant Schmidt needed to catch a nine on the river to survive, but since this is an elimination post you already know that didn't happen. Instead the {7-Clubs} peeled off to send Schmidt home in 13th place.

We're now down to 12 players which means it's time for the two-table redraw.

Aleksandr Gnatenko Eliminated in 14th Place ($12,122)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Aleksandr Gnatenko - 14th Place
Aleksandr Gnatenko - 14th Place

Action folded to Aleksandr Gnatenko's button where he put out a raise to 16,000. Manig Loeser peered at his hole cards from the small blind and cut out a three-bet to 42,000. The big blind folded and action came back around to Gnatenko. He decided to four-bet to 85,000.

Loeser announced "all in" which was actually a bet for Gnatenko's tournament life. Gnatenko snap called and the hands were tabled.

Gnatenko: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Loeser: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

Gnatenko was in need of help going to the flop but found little of it when {7-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{2-Clubs} hit the felt.

"Come on!" Gnatenko yelled. "Ace!"

Instead it was the {K-Hearts} to fall on the turn. He pleaded once again for one of his outs on the river. Unfortunately for Gnatenko, the {6-Hearts} finished off the board and he became our 14th-place finisher.

Loeser, on the other hand, scooped up a massive pot and is now sitting on 1 million in chips.

Grant Hinkle Eliminated in 16th Place ($12,122)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante
Grant Hinkle
Grant Hinkle

Action folded to Eric Blair on the button and he put in a standard raise. The small blind got out of the way and Grant Hinkle opted to move all in from the big blind for roughly 135,000. Blair made the call and Hinkle discovered the bad news.

Blair: {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Hinkle: {A-Hearts}{3-Clubs}

Hinkle was in need of some help, but the {5-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop didn't provide much. The {2-Diamonds} turn gave Hinkle a gutshot straight draw, but it also have Blair flush blockers. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {9-Spades}, the last card Hinkle would see in Event #4: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em (Six Handed).

A short-stacked Matthew Plecki shoved his last 68,000 or so holding {K-}{Q-} only to run into the {A-}{A-} of Zohar Spivack. There was a queen-high flop to give Plecki a little hope, but the turn and river left him wanting. Plecki was eliminated in 17th place and took home $12,122 for his efforts.

On a flop of {J-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, Ville Sissonen checked over from the big blind to Joe Cada. Cada bet 19,000 and Sissonen replied with a raise all in for about 153,000. Cada called and the hands were shown.

Cada: {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Sissonen: {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Sissonen needed to improve but did not find help on fourth street ({2-Clubs}) or fifth ({8-Clubs}). He was eliminated in 18th place and will pocket $12,122 in prize money.
