Ian Simpson Looking to Make His Mark on Vegas

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

If I ask you who Ian Simpson is, chance are his name probably won't ring a bell. Simpson has amassed over $500,000 in live tournament earnings, but all of them have come in events abroad. However, if you ask someone over in the United Kingdom who he is, you will likely get a long story of all the success he has enjoyed over there.

Simpson burst onto the scene in 2012 when he final tabled the biggest event in Ireland, the Irish Poker Open. He finished 4th at that final table for $141,623. He enjoyed some moderate tournament success the rest of the year, but never came close to matching that score, until 2013. Earlier this year, he just so happened to final table the Irish Poker Open Main Event...again. This time around, he topped his fourth place finish by winning the event for $339,604. But that wasn't the only highlight of the day.

Mere seconds after winning the event, he pulled his long time girlfriend Emma towards the table, and got down on one knee to purpose. She said yes, tying up a perfect day the likes of which have rarely been seen. Well now Simpson has come out to Las Vegas, hoping to make a name for himself in the biggest poker city in all of the world, and he's well on his way to securing his first WSOP cash with an above average stack as we approach the money today. The question is, if he does find a way to win this event, what we will he do to top his last big win celebration?

Simpson Takes One From Kling

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Lauren opened in early position with a bet to 3,200. Ian Simpson from the middle position and the player in the small blind call.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and both the small blind and Kling check. Simpson made it 7,800 and only Kling would come along.

Both players check the {j-Hearts} turn and the {3-Hearts} river. Simpson being in position was waiting for Kling to table her hand. She said "Have a nine" but did not turn over her hand. When it was clear she didn't want to, Simpson finally tabled {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

Another player asked Simpson if the 7,800 bet on the flop was intentional. Simpson looked confused and it was pointed out that 78 made the nuts on the flop.

Seewald Busts Duhamel

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

We missed the hand as it happened, but table mate Tyler Cornell was kind enough to let us know what happened. Action folded to Jonathan Duhamel in the cutoff, and he open shoved for his last 32,000 with {2-}{2-}. Unfortunately for him, Joel Seewald woke up with {q-}{q-} in the small blind, and the 2010 Main Event Champion was never able to catch up. Seewald collected the knockout, upping his stack to 125,000.

Before he busted, our Kristy Arnett caught up with Duhamel to talk about life in Las Vegas outside of the Rio.

de Meulder Eliminated

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Matthias de Meulder moved all in for is final 14,000 with {6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} from late position. He found one caller was happy to see it was a race after his opponent tabled {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

There was help on the {7-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop for de Meulder and his hand would hold through the {a-Clubs} turn. The {5-Clubs} river would knock him out of the lead and out of the tournament.

Baumann Doubles

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Gaelle Baumann (From Day 1)
Gaelle Baumann (From Day 1)

A middle position player raised to 3,200 and Eddy Sabat called from the hijack seat. The player in the cutoff raised to 8,100 and that was followed by the all in of Gaelle Baumann from the button for her final 42,100.

The middle position player immediately folded and Sabat thought for a few seconds and also folded. The player in the cutoff took a bit more time to think about things and ended up making the call.

Baumann: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Cutoff: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

Baumann was ahead going to the flop and secured her lead when the {5-Spades}{j-Hearts}{q-Clubs} came down. The {a-Hearts} turn opened up a few outs for her opponent but none would materialize when the {3-Hearts} river gave Baumann the pot.

Le Loses Some

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Not long after Nam Le won a nice pot off of Tyler Cornell, we saw him lose some back after losing a race. Le and a short stack of about 16,000 got all in the money in preflop. Le held {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and his opponent had {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. The flop came all hearts, {6-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and though Le had a heart in his hand, his opponent had a better one. The {9-Hearts} on the turn sealed the double up for his opponent, and the meaningless river was one more heart, the {j-Hearts}.

Le is still doing fine for himself after that loss, as he has around 60,000.
