Matros Going For Four In Four

Level 4 : 75/150, 0 ante
Matt Matros earlier in the WSOP.
Matt Matros earlier in the WSOP.

The current record for most consecutive years with a World Series of Poker Bracelet currently belongs to Bill Boyd and Doyle Brunson, who have each won four bracelets in four years. Matt Matros has currently gone the last three years and earned a WSOP bracelet each year and looks to tie the record by winning Event #54.

In 2010, Matros took down a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event worth $189,870. The year 2011 came along and Matros found himself taking down yet another bracelet in a $2,500 Mixed Hold'em event for $303,501 more. In 2012, Matros accomplished the nearly impossible task of taking down a third bracelet in three years by shipping a $1,500 No Limit Hold'em - Six Handed event for $454,835.

Matros has appeared in the field here today and he's already built himself a nice tower of chips. Could this be the event that Matros takes down his fourth bracelet in four years? It's still to early to tell here on Day 1, but anything can happen in the world of poker. We'll be sure to keep a close eye on Matros throughout the day as he tries to lock up his fourth World Series of Poker bracelet in four years.

The Field is Getting Tougher

Athanasios Polychronopoulos (Seen Here Showing Off His Second Gold Bracelet)
Athanasios Polychronopoulos (Seen Here Showing Off His Second Gold Bracelet)

Two of poker's young guns are in the house, as two-time bracelet winner Athanasios Polychronopoulos and Jesse Sylvia are here after late registering.

We passed by Polychronopoulos' table long enough to catch him drop a small pot, after he called a river bet with the board reading {6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{8-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}. Polychronopoulos mucked when his opponent tabled the {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for top pair, but the damage was only a dent, and he still has plenty of chips left to get things going in the right direction.

Plenty of Extras Being Given Away At This Year's WSOP

Level 4 : 75/150, 0 ante

The buzz inside the walls of the Rio extends beyond just the tournaments on the 2013 World Series of Poker schedule. Online poker in Nevada is a very, very hot topic right now, and WSOP.com is making a lot of noise.

While the site has yet to launch, you can head to the Lambada Room of the Rio or look for one of the beautiful and friendly WSOP.com ladies walking the hallways to sign up for a free, personal WSOP.com online poker account. This is a great way to get a jump on the site's registration, and plenty of people have already taken this opportunity.

What's more is that the WSOP will be hosting daily raffles for everyone that has taken the time to register for WSOP.com at the Rio. What can you win? Plenty of fantastic prizes including 36 WSOP seats!

Players 21 years of age and older who sign up for a WSOP.com account will automatically be entered into the “36-Seat Giveaway” where a randomly-selected winner will win a seat into the next day’s first WSOP gold bracelet event. One of the events eligible in this promotion is the $111,111 One Drop High Roller No-Limit Hold’em tournament that is expected to feature a $10,000,000 prize pool and allow you to play poker with the biggest names in the game. In total, $182,333 in WSOP seats, including a seat to the WSOP Main Event, are being given away during this one-of-a-kind WSOP.com promotion.

In addition to the 36-Seat Giveaway, a “Hot Seat” promotion will allow any player who signs up for a WSOP.com online account and wears their WSOP.com patch on their chest at the table while playing an event to be randomly selected to receive 500 bonus dollars deposited directly into their WSOP.com online account once the site has received all regulatory approvals and launches.

With 62 WSOP gold bracelet events and three winners promised for the Main Event, this promotion includes $32,000 worth of value to those participating.

Liebert Modeling Herself After Hellmuth

Level 4 : 75/150, 0 ante

We didn't catch the action but we did catch the aftermath. Kathy Lierbert was mucking her {A-}{A-} while Amanda Musumeci was holding {8-Spades}{7-Spades} on a board of {3-Spades}{8-Clubs}{10-Spades}{K-Spades}{A-Diamonds}. Liebert was cutting out the chips to ship a double up over to Musumeci while joking to the table about the hand.

"You reward this kinda play?" Liebert joked to the dealer and the table. "I'm surprised you didn't three bet me with that crap!"

"Ok Hellmuth," Musumeci said laughing.

"Didn't you know? I model myself after him," Liebert said.

After that hand, Liebert still has a bunch of chips and is sitting over starting stack while Musumeci is about the same.

Level 4 : 75/150, 0 ante

With two professionals recently exiting the tournament floor, balance has been restored with the arrival of Olivier Busquet and Robert Cheung.

We expect to see several more notable names make their appearance during the next hour, with most pros opting to utilize the late registration process to take their seats a few hours into the tournament.

Scholl and Sands Square Off

Level 3 : 50/100, 0 ante
Benjamin Scholl at an earlier 2013 WSOP final table.
Benjamin Scholl at an earlier 2013 WSOP final table.

Now seated together in the Brasilia room are bracelet winner Benjamin Scholl and the now wife of David 'Doc' Sands, Erika Sands.

Scholl took down his bracelet last year in a $5,000 limit hold'em event where he took down $206,760. He followed up that impressive performance with a deep run in Event #29: $5,000 H.O.R.S.E. this year where he finished second to Tom Schneider earning him a total of $197,228. He looks to follow up those two runs with a good run here today in Event #54 which would be his second cash in a no-limit event here at the World Series of Poker. His first was in a $1,500 no-limit event in 2009 where he finished 4th for $150,132.

Sands also has some impressive results under her belt, but mostly under the maiden name, Erika Moutinho. Her crowning jewel would be her amazingly deep run in the Main Event two years ago, where she last just one spot more than now her husband 'Doc' Sands. For her 29th place finish, Sands locked up $242,636.

The two just entered but we're sure to see some exciting high level poker between the two players so we'll keep updating.

Eu Sou Brasileiro

Level 3 : 50/100, 0 ante

With today's Confederation Cup championship pitting Brazil and Spain against one another for one of fútbol's most coveted championships, there are a number of players in the field today who have made their allegiance clear.

Several Brazil jerseys have been spotted amid the masses of hoodie-clad poker players, and necks are craning after every fold to take a look at the match on the television screens sprinkled around the aptly named Brasilia Room.

One player who doesn't have to move a muscle while watching his beloved A Seleção take to the pitch is Odemilson Moura, who came to the tournament today ready for Brazil to earn its latest world title.

Moura is running good already, as his seat is directly facing one of the large TV's in the Red section. Rather than distract himself from the task at hand trying to catch glimpses of his national team in action, Moura can simply fold and look up to follow the strikes and saves.

With Brazil taking a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match, it appears Moura will have plenty to cheer about here today, regardless of what happens with his chip stack.
