What Are the Odds?

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

While the field may be larger here on Day 1b, it's going to be very hard to find a better hand than what was produced yesterday at Table 443 in the Purple Section of the Amazon Room. For those wondering what we're talking about, you can read about the five-way all-in clash by clicking here. The hand was won by Mac Sohrabi, with Yucel Eminoglu scooping a sizable side pot.

There has been much talk about the hand via social media and at various tables throughout the field today. Most of the chatter is about the player who called all in after raising from under the gun holding the {4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} to put his healthy 40,000-chip stack at risk. Checking the PokerNews Odds Calculator, it appears the player wasn't in that bad of shape given all of the hands. Let's take a look.

{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}: 19%
{A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}: 7%
{Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}: 35%
{A-Clubs}{K-Spades}: 21%
{J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}: 17%

We all know everyone loves nice, deceptive suited connectors, as they can often win you very large pots in the right instances, but in this case the hand failed to work out for the player who held the {4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. Even so, a 19% chance of winning the hand in a big, five-way pot doesn't seem like a bad shot at a ton of chips, and we all know there's nothing wrong with a bit of gamble in a tournament as it can be just the thing to propel you to a deep run.

The way the hand went down, it's highly in doubt that we will witness another one that reaches the epic proportions of this one, but we'll be keeping our eyes wide open. In the meantime, enjoy this hand history from our archives.

Scotty Nguyen Doesn't With Aces

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

With the board reading {2-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{j-Spades} by the turn, we caught Scotty Nguyen putting 1,700 into the pot along with a lone opponent.

The river card came {K-Diamonds}, and Nguyen led out for a bet of 2,000. His opponent paused for a moment before cutting out a raise of 5,600 and pushing it forward.

Nguyen appeared to ask for a count of the raise, but he quickly tossed out the requisite calling chips, only to see the other player reveal the {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs} for a flopped set.

Nguyen's cards went fluttering through the air as they headed for the muck, and the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} landed face up for all to see.

Gates Climbing Early

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Garry Gates (seen here in Event #40, where he finished in 11th place)
Garry Gates (seen here in Event #40, where he finished in 11th place)

The action started with the player in early position opening to 250, and getting called by Garry Gates in late position, as well as both players in the blinds.

The flop came down {4-Spades}{q-Spades}{k-Hearts}, as all four opted to check their options. The {2-Hearts} fell on the turn, before the action checked around to Gates, who made it 450 to go. Just the small blind came along, as the {9-Diamonds} completed the board.

Both players checked, before the player in the small blind announced ace-high, showing his {a-Spades}{6-Spades}. Gates then turned over his {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} to win the hand.

Lee Takes a Hit by Big Slick

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

We happened upon Table 365 with 10,000 in the pot and a board reading {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. Alex Schechter had just bet 11,000 from the big blind and put the pressure on Bernard Lee in the under-the-gun position. The 2005 WSOP Main Event 13th-place finisher thought for about 20 seconds before making the call only to muck when Schechter tabled the {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} for the flopped nuts.

Fossilman Unearths A Flopped Set

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

We saw Greg Raymer tabling his hand after calling an opponent's river bet, with the final board reading {4-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}.

While the other player's cards were seen by the table, the only hand that mattered was Raymer's {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}, as "Fossilman" flopped a set of threes to chip up.

Schechter Finishes Off Lee

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Not long ago, Alex Schechter used Big Slick to cripple Bernard Lee, and now he's used the same hand to finish him off.

It happened after a player raised and four other, including Lee in the small blind, called him. The {a-}{k-}{j-} flop saw action check to Schechter on the button and he bet. Only Lee called and then the dealer burned and turned a {7-}. Lee check-called a bet of 1,900 and a {6-} completed the board on the river.

Lee checked for a third time and Schechter moved all in. Lee called off his last 4,000 or so with {a-}{j-} for a flopped two pair, but it was second best to Schechter's bigger two pair with {a-}{k-}. A devastated Lee collected himself and made an early exit from this year's Main Event.

Helppi Gives it Up

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The hand folded around to the player on the button, who made it 250, before Juha Helppi bumped it up to 750 from the big blind. He was snap called, as both players watched the flop come down {4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. Helppi threw out a continuation bet of 400 and was called, before both players opted to check the {9-Hearts} on the turn. With the {j-Diamonds} completing the board, Helppi checked, before mucking his hand, when his opponent confidently bet out 1,100.

Norwegian Pro Snowboarder Torstein Horgmo in the Field

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Norwegian professional snowboarder Torstein Horgmo is amongst those in the field for the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event, starting out Day 1b on Table 440 in the Purple Section of the Amazon Room.

While Horgmo doesn't have any gold bracelets or WSOP cashes just yet, he has plenty of other gold for those to envy. Horgmo is a three-time X Games gold medal winner from the 2008, 2011 and 2013 Aspen Big Air competitions. He earned silver from those same competitions in 2009, 2010 and 2012. In 2009, Horgmo won four slopestyle contests on the Dew Tour.

Horgmo is also well known for releasing his own film about his personal snowboarding career, titled Horgasm: A Love Story.

First Break of the Day; Early Eliminations, Celebrity Appearances & More

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Players make their way to the Main Event
Players make their way to the Main Event

The first level of Day 1b is in the books, and what a first two hours it turned out to be. Today's field has attracted some of poker's elite including Sorel Mizzi, Alex Phahurat, Andy Frankenberger, Greg Raymer, David Bach, Randy Dorfman, Dennis Phillips, Paul Klann, Layne Flack, Andrew Lichtenberger, Scott Seiver, Johnny Lodden, Erick Lindgren and Doyle Brunson.

Then ten-time bracelet winner and Poker Hall of Famer was actually honored at the start of the day when WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart revealed a bronze bust of Brunson.

"Think of it as the first step in a more tangible Poker Hall of Fame," Stewart said as the room cheered. Stewart then indicated that he had a seat card for "Texas Dolly" in today's field, and despite saying earlier in the summer that he wouldn't be playing any events, Brunson accepted and is playing at the feature table

In addition, two celebrities are in action in MMA fighter Georges St. Pierre and Everybody Loves Raymond's Ray Romano. Needless to say, their appearance in the Main has generated quite a bit of excitement and will be a strong story line as the day unfolds.

Two players who were in action were Mehrdad Danialifar and Samuel Gregory. Unfortunately for them, they're no longer with us, Danialifar earned the distinction of being the first player eliminated from the Day 1b flight when he ran queens into Terry Fleischer's pocket aces in the first 22 minutes of play. A couple of minutes later, Gregory became the second player to fall.

Likewise, 2005 WSOP Main Event finisher Bernard Lee took a big hit by Alex Schechter and was eliminated a short time later.

We'll be back in 20 minutes for Level 2. Stay tuned.
