Peltekci Leads Final 52, Four-Time Bracelet Winner Schneider Hot on His Heels

Level 5 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
Mike Peltekci Leads Heading into Day 2
Mike Peltekci Leads Heading into Day 2

That's a wrap from the Amazon Room! After five 120-minute levels of play, Event #5: $10,000 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball Championship has bagged up for the evening. By the end of the night it was Mike Peltekci who led the final 52 players with a stack of 171,000. Bagging up close to Peltekci's stack is none other than four-time WSOP bracelet winner Tom Schneider with 155,300.

The day began with 120 hopefuls beginning their quest to claim the fifth gold bracelet of the 2014 WSOP. These 120 players generated a total prize pool of $1,128,000. The top 12 players in the field will make the money with first place earning an astounding $355,324.

Peltekci, who bagged up the chip lead for the evening, currently serves as Merit Casino President in Cyprus. PokerNews' own Rich Ryan sat down with Peltekci for an interview last August which can be read here. Close behind Peltecki is Schneider, who looks to claim his fifth WSOP bracelet. Each of Schneider's bracelet have been in non-hold'em games, but he's yet to add a draw game victory to that list. That could very well change by the end of this event, as Schneider sat toward the top of the chip counts for most of the day and continued his upward trend as the day closed out.

Also returning toward the top of the chip counts is reigning triple draw champion Eli Elezra. Elezra won his second bracelet in 2013's only triple draw event, beating Daniel Negreanu heads up for the gold. The two-time bracelet winner has experience on his side and will return for Day 2 with a healthy stack of 125,600.

This stacked field has dozens of familiar faces returning for Day 2. Notable names who sit among the final 52 include, but are not limited to 1996 WSOP Main Event champion Huck Seed (136,000), David Chiu (120,000), Scott Abrams (108,700), three-time bracelet winner Barry Greenstein (104,000), George Danzer (86,800), seven-time bracelet winner Billy Baxter (85,200), David Benyamine (71,700), Calvin Anderson (65,800), Freddy Deeb (62,500), Phil Galfond (38,300), Jason Mercier (37,200), Jennifer Harman (34,600), and poker legend Doyle Brunson (22,200).

While all of these players will come back for Day 2, others were not as fortunate. The day saw many notable names fall victim to their peers before the bag and tag occurred. Those to fall include Daniel Negreanu, Chino Rheem, Phil Ivey, Scott Seiver, Eric Wasserson, Phil Laak, Abe Mosseri, Allen Kessler, Mike Matusow, Layne Flack, and many more.

Play resumes at 2 p.m. on Friday in the Amazon Room. Be sure to tune back into PokerNews for all of the latest from the felt as this prestigious event plays down to a final table!

Abrams Hits 100K

Level 4 : 400/800, 0 ante
Scott Abrams
Scott Abrams

Scott Abrams cut out an early position raise and Abe Mosseri made it three bets from the next seat over. The rest of the table folded back to Abrams who flatted. Abrams took two cards on the first draw while Mosseri drew one. Abrams check called a continuation bet and took one card on the next draw. Mosseri stood pat.

Abrams checked and Mosseri fired out another bet. Abrams thought for a moment before coming over the top with a check-raise. Mosseri quickly threw his hand away and Abrams was pushed the pot. He's now sitting right around 100,000 in chips.

Justin Bonomo raised from the button and found a call from Doyle Brunson in the big blind. Brunson took two new cards while Bonomo opted for three. Brunson led out on the flop, Bonomo came over the top with a raise, Brunson made it three bets and Bonomo called.

On the second draw, both players took one card. Brunson led out with a bet and Bonomo called. Brunson stood pat on the last draw and Bonomo pulled one new card. Brunson checked, Bonomo led out, and Brunson called.

Bonomo fanned an eight perfect - {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} - only to be bested by Brunson's {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}. Texas Dolly took down the pot and is now back at starting stack of 30,000.

Matusow's Ten is Better

Level 2 : 300/500, 0 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

We caught the action as Justin Bonomo and Mike Matusow went to the first draw. Both players picked up two new cards and Bonomo led out with a bet. Matusow called to see the second draw.

Bonomo took just one new card on this draw while Matusow stuck with two. Bonomo bet once again and Matusow flatted. Bonomo stood pat on the final draw and Matusow picked up one. Both players checked and Matusow flipped up the {10-Clubs}. Bonomo slapped the {10-Hearts} on the felt to show that he also held a ten-low. Matusow fanned the rest of his hand - {6-}{5-}{3-}{2-} - causing Bonomo to throw his hand into the muck.

Matusow picked up the pot and now has about 20,000 in chips.

The Legend Arrives

Level 1 : 200/400, 0 ante
Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson

Ten-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Doyle Brunson has entered the building. Despite tweets earlier today that made us think he would opt not to play in this event, he has recently taken his seat in the back corner of the Amazon Room.

Doyle BrunsonSitting here wondering if I should play the triple draw tournament today. I keep remembering every time I play a tourney, "what am I doing"?

Doyle BrunsonThink I'm going to pass the WSOP today. Maybe there is a cash game at the Bellagio. Hard to play well when you aren't enthusiastic about it.

While he may have lacked a bit of enthusiasm coming into the day, Brunson's thoughts may soon change as he's seated at one of the most enthusiastic and talkative tables in the room. Brunson is joined by the likes of Marco Johnson, Mike Matusow, Scott Seiver, and Justin Bonomo.

Welcome to PokerNews' live coverage of Event #5: $10,000 2-7 Triple Draw! This is the first draw game on this year's schedule and it will surely have a field stacked with notable professional players.

This is the first of two triple draw events this summer with another sporting a $1,500 buy-in coming a week from today. The $10,000 buy-in format is new for the 2014 WSOP, as last year the only 2-7 Triple Draw event was a $2,500 buy-in. That event drew 282 entries and the cream rose to the top of the field. The final table included the likes of Scott Seiver, David "ODB" Baker, and David Chiu. Eli Elezra and Daniel Negreanu played heads up for the bracelet with Elezra ultimately coming out on top. He pocketed $173,236 for his victory and earned his second gold bracelet.

The field will play ten 60-minute levels today with a 15-minute break after every two levels. There will be no dinner break. This will lead to players bagging up around 3 a.m.
