Event #61: $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Championship

Day 2 Started

Ben Yu Leads The Way

There are 58 players remaining in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship and Ben Yu leads the way with 126,600 chips. In total just 16 players will get paid, so they're a long way away from knowing who those players will be.

Australian poker phenom James Obst sits in second place, and he's followed by Russian Nikolay Losev in third. Former winners of this event Freddie Ellis, Henry Orenstein, and Bertrand Grospellier are each still alive while other top pros and successful stud players like Eric Buchman, Frank Kassela, and Phil Hellmuth are in the hunt as well.

Meanwhile short stacks David Singer, Gabe Kaplan, and Daniel Negreanu will look to double-up quickly to keep their hopes alive. The goal today is to play 10 levels or get down to a final table of eight players. Stay tuned for Day 2 coverage of Event #61 here on PokerNews!

No Comeback For Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu

After finishing second in the "Big One for One Drop." Daniel Negreanu hopped into this tournament late last night. A few pots towards the end left him crippled and he started today with very little chips.

Just now Negreanu raised on third street and Dan Shak was his only opponent left to chase out. Shak looked long and hard at his hole cards before making the call. On fourth Shak paired up and bet, and Negreanu moved all in for 3,100 total. Shak called, and the cards ran out as follows:

Negreanu: {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} / {J-Spades}{8-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} / {9-Hearts}
Shak: {Q-Spades}{J-Hearts} / {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} / {3-Spades}

On sixth street Shak hit three of a kind and Negreanu was in need of hitting a jack on seventh. Negreanu squeezed his card and said, "It's paint. It's a club! Three jacks!" — then he turned over the {9-Hearts}.

Shak was extremely confused and thought he had lost, but Negreanu was just messing around. When Negreanu stood up and left Shak realized he had won the hand and said, "Oh man, I'm just way too tired."

Negreanu hit the rail and Shak sits on quite a comfortable stack.

Two Pair For Hellmuth

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

On fifth street three players were involved in a hand and the action was on Sergii Baranov with the high board showing. The Ukrainian checked, Phil Hellmuth checked behind, and Richard Ashby bet with three clubs on board. Both Baranov and Hellmuth called, then on sixth Ashby hit a pair of jacks. Ashby bet, Baranov folded, and Hellmuth called.

On seventh street both players checked.

Hellmuth: {X-}{X-} / {3-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {X-}
Ashby: {X-}{X-} / {5-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{J-Spades} / {X-}
Baranov: {X-}{X-} / {3-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} / {X-}

"Two pair," Hellmuth announced, and Ashby tapped the table.

Hellmuth showed {A-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{5-Hearts} for his hole cards and he raked in this pot.

Hellmuth Takes Out an Old Rival

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

The 2012 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event ended in an epic battle between Phil Hellmuth and Ukrainian pro Sergii Baranov. Baranov and Hellmuth tangled both on the felt and verbally, which created highly entraining poker.

Just now Baranov was knocked out again by Hellmuth as the Ukrainian was all in for his final 400 chips on third street. Richard Ashby had completed, Baranov called all in, and Hellmuth called as well.

On fourth street Baranov cheered as he paired, Hellmuth bet, and Ashby called. On fifth Hellmuth bet again into Ashby's strong looking board, and Baranov didn't like where this was going. Ashby folded and the showdown went as follows:

Hellmuth: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} / {9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {A-Hearts}
Ashby: {X-}{X-} / {10-Spades}{K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} --fold
Baranov: {6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} / {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} / {K-Diamonds}

When the cards were turned over on fifth, Baranov was in the lead with two pair, but Hellmuth had caught up with him on sixth. Baranov was knocked out and Hellmuth took the pot down.

Helppi Takes Out Wasserson

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Eric Wasserson caught a bad run of cards while being very short, but eventually he decided to commit to a hand which put him at risk. Wasserson called all-in for 100 and Juha Helppi completed from his immediate left. Richard Ashby called the completion and the other players folded.

On fourth street, Helppi bet and Ashby called.

"Queen!" Wasseron called out before the dealer dealt fifth street.

Wasserson received a queen and said, "That's how it's done!" while Hellmuth laughed. Helppi bet again and Ashby called.

On sixth street, Helppi checked. When Ashby bet, Wasserson got worried his hand would not survive. Helppi called and on seventh both players checked.

Wasserson: {X-}{X-} / {6-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{7-Clubs} / {X-}
Helppi: {X-}{X-} / {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{7-Spades} / {X-}
Ashby: {X-}{X-} / {9-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{4-Spades}{10-Clubs} / {X-}

Ashby showed {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades} for two pair, Helppi tabled {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{7-Hearts} for a better two pair and Wasserson sweated his last card. Wasserson ultimately showed {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and he was knocked out from the tournament.

Rough Start for Friedman

Level 12 : 1,500/3,000, 300 ante

Adam Friedman started the day as one of the biggest stacks but we just saw him lose a pot to John Cernuto, which was likely one of many, as he's down to around 59,000 chips.

On sixth street, Friedman checked and Cernuto bet. Friedman called and both players checked on seventh street.

Friedman: {X-}{X-} / {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} / {X-}
Cernuto: {X-}{X-} / {K-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} / {X-}

"I can't beat two pair," Cernuto said when he checked behind.

"Me neither," Friedman replied.

Cernuto tabled {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for a pair of sevens with an ace-king kicker, and Friedman looked long and hard at his cards before throwing them into the muck.
