Deeb Leads After Day 1 of $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship; Mizrachi and Hennigan Among Big Stacks

Level 10
Shaun Deeb leads After Day 1
Shaun Deeb leads After Day 1

Day 1 of the 2018 World Series of Poker Event #27: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship is in the books and the field of 157 entries has been cut down to 72 hopefuls after ten levels of 60 minutes each. The field has already surpassed the 150 entries of the previous year and the registration remains open until the first cards are dealt on Day 2 on Wednesday, June 13th, 2018, as of 2 p.m. local time.

Leading the field of survivors is two-time WSOP bracelet winner Shaun Deeb with 234,500 followed by Michael McKenna (215,500) and Robert Mizrachi (212,500), while other big stacks and notables at the end of level 10 feature Brock Parker (199,500), Aditya Prasetyo (191,000), Randy Ohel (185,500) and John Hennigan (175,000). Hennigan jumped into the action mid-way through Day 1 after finishing 7th in the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship. "Johnny World" was quickly reduced to a short stack before turning on the heat late on and bagging up a top 10 stack.

A whole host of other former WSOP bracelet winners bagged up above-average stacks in David Benyamine (166,500), James Obst (164,500), Anthony Zinno (162,000), David "Bakes" Baker (159,000), Ian Johns (158,000), Cliff Josephy (142,500), John Monnette (142,000) and Jeff Lisandro (132,500).

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu quickly doubled up his starting stack after taking a seat, but the last two levels of the night weren't as kind to the six-time WSOP bracelet winner. "KidPoker" advanced with a mere 25,500 and will return on Day 2 as one of the shortest stacks. Katja Thater returned to the WSOP tables for the first time since 2013 and made it through with 53,000, while 2016 champion and five-time WSOP bracelet winner Jason Mercier bagged up 79,000.

Many other big names were less fortunate and joined the rail throughout the day including defending champion David Bach and 2017 runner-up Eric Rodawig. John Racener, Nick Schulman, Adam Friedman, Ben Yu, Paul Volpe, Rep Porter, Brandon Shack-Harris, Viacheslav Zhukov and Justin Bonomo also failed to find a bag.

Bonomo's seemingly never-ending win streak in 2018 ended in rather brief fashion, as the now two-time WSOP bracelet winner was quickly reduced to a short stack in level eight after running into the flush of Michael Gathy before bowing out soon after. Zhukov's end came in the penultimate level of the day when he was all in and at risk with four to a flush on fourth street in Seven Card Stud, as three blanks failed to improve the Russian against Randy Ohel and Richard Bai.

All remaining 72 survivors will return to the tables of the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino at 2 p.m. local time and the registration will close once the cards are back in the air with level 11. New additions to the field will receive 50,000 in chips with blinds of 2,000/4,000 in Hold'em and Omaha, while the three Stud games feature a bring-in of 1,000, a completion of 4,000 and limits of 4,000/8,000 upon restart.

Among those expected to jump in are Brian Rast and Mike Wattel, who battled for the title in Event #23: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship until after 2 a.m. local time. Rast emerged as the champion to secure his fourth bracelet and a payday of $259,670. A feature table on the PokerGO live stream will be available as well and the PokerNews live reporting team will be your one-stop shop for all the action from the floor.

Randy Ohel: {K-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts}
Richard Bai: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

On fourth street, Viacheslav Zhukov and Richard Bai were all in against big stack Randy Ohel. Zhukov had a massive draw with four clubs, however, he would run out blank with the {5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds} as remaining cards. Bai picked up the {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for aces and tens, and Ohel's {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{5-Spades} could not send two players to the rail.

Bai scooped the main pot to boost his stack, while Zhukov joined the rail.

Gathy Flushes Bonomo

Level 8

Limit Holdem

Justin Bonomo joined the action half-way through Day 1 but hasn't been able to capitalize on his late registration just yet as he is down to 15,000.

Bonomo, Michael Gathy, and Michael McKenna were in the hand as the flop read {j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and all three players went to the turn of the {a-Hearts}. Bonomo, who was under the gun, checked and Gathy bet which both his opponents called.

On the {2-Clubs} river, Gathy once again bet after being checked to, and only Bonomo made the call. Gathy tabled {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for the nut flush, and Heads-up Championship winner Bonomo mucked.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Richard Ashby raised from under the gun and was called three ways by Perry Friedman in the cutoff, Andrew Kelsall in the small blind and Yuebin Guo in the big blind. The flop of {A-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds} was checked to Ashby and he bet, Friedman raised and Kelsall folded, Guo called and Ashby came along.

The {K-Hearts} on the turn was checked through and Guo bet the {8-Clubs} river, forcing a fold from Ashby. Friedman called, but mucked when Guo turned over his {A-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} for aces and eights, as well as the nut low.

Vitch Keeps Winning

Level 6
Chris Vitch
Chris Vitch

Limit Hold'em

Christopher Vitch has just won two pots on the river after putting the pressure on his opponents.

In the first hand, he called a raise from Eric Kurtzman while in the big blind and saw a flop of {9-Hearts}{j-Spades}{10-Clubs}, before his check-raise was called and the turn was revealed to be the {10-Hearts}. Kurtzman called Vitch's bet, but when the river came the {5-Diamonds}, Vitch's pressure worked as he got his opponent to fold with a bet.

And it was to be a similar situation just a couple of hands later. Vitch raised from the button and was three-bet by George Alexander. Vitch made the call and stuck around on the {k-Spades}{5-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} flop to see the {7-Clubs} turn. Alexander continued, Vitche called and the former checked on the {9-Diamonds} river. Vitch decided to put Alexander to the test with a bet and after a minutes thought, the latter folded.

Brock Parker raised in the hijack and short stack Sampo Ryynanen made it three bets on the button, which Parker called. On the {5-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop, Parker checked and folded to a bet.

Soon after, Adam Friedman raised and John Esposito three-bet, Friedman called. The flop came {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs} and Friedman checked, Esposito bet, Friedman check-raised and then folded to a reraise. Esposito flashed the {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}.

Parker limped in and Ryynanen raised, Friedman called and Parker came along. On the {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop, action checked to Ryynanen and his bet was called by Parker only. The {6-Diamonds} turn brought a check by Parker, a bet by Ryynanen and a fold.

McKenna had that beat with {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{X-} for tens and fives, which won the pot.

Brandon Shack-Harris: {X-} {X-} / {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{7-Spades}{9-Clubs} / {X-}

Picking up the action on fourth street, Brandon Shack-Harris bet and Jan Suchanek called before doing so again on fifth street and sixth street. Both then elected to check seventh and Shack-Harris rolled over the {5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for a low and a pair of deuces. Suchanek revealed {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for a pair of nines and took the high pot.

Suchanek is third on New Zealand's all-time money list and a mixed-game aficionado, who can be seen regularly seen during the Aussie Millions at the start of the year and in Las Vegas during the WSOP.

The early chip leader on the very same table appears to be Robert Campbell.
